'Turnback Tuesday' highlights Pink House Cove on Housatonic River


Turnback Tuesday looks at Pink House Cove, a small sheltered area located on the edge of the Housatonic River as you are traveling north.

It's a popular spot among fishermen and Great Blue Heron. You can also observe swans eating the river grasses in this calm area of the river.

This art piece is one of many art works on display at Derby Public Library, 313 Elizabeth St.

Come in and visit this truly unique and beautiful building.

Littles' Art Studio on tap Tuesday at Derby Neck Library



DERBY - Every other Tuesday, bring your little one in-person to Derby Neck Library for some artistic exploration of various art mediums! The next program is tomorrow, April 18.

The Library is at 307 Hawthorne Ave.

One session will feature finger painting, while another will have stamps, and then another will have chalk. 

Your child will get to experiment with all sorts of artwork, bringing out their little Picasso (and maybe a bit of yours, too)! And the best part is, we clean up the mess. This program is targeted to ages 3-5, but everyone is welcome!

Watercolor workshop slated Sunday at Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center

Watercolor Workshop led by Rich DiCarlo on Sunday, Feb. 27 at 1:30 p.m. at the Ansonia Nature Center, 10 Deerfield Lane.

ANSONIA - Enjoy a Sunday afternoon with Valley Arts Council President Rich DiCarlo painting a fox in the snow. 

This watercolor workshop is for beginners and seasoned art veterans. Rich’s creative approach levels the playing field so it’s encouraging, challenging, and fun. 

All materials will be provided; please register in
advance by Feb. 24 at ansnaturectr@ansoniact.org. Materials fee is $10.

Oxford Cultural Arts to host reception for 'Art Heals' exhibit at Oxford Public Library


"Art Heals" exhibit will run Oct. 2-Dec. 4.
A reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. Nov. 2. The event is f
ree and open to the public.

The theme is "Art Heals” with art works that reflect on times of overcoming challenges, physically and mentally. 

The art on display shows us how the creative process is used to help heal from emotions from everyday stress, trauma or overcome disabilities.

Oxford Public Library is located at 49 Great Oak Road.

Art exhibit on tap in October at Kellogg Environmental Center in Derby

DERBY - Visit the Kellogg Environmental Center throughout the month of October to view the work of award-winning artist Mary Burk Smith.  

Her clay and collage pieces reflect the many components of the natural world.  Her virtual gallery will be accessible through the DEEP website starting in October.   

At 3 p.m. Oct. 16 the Center will host an in-person reception where visitors will be able to meet Smith and gain a deeper understanding of her work. 

Smith works in a variety of mediums, including clay, mixed media, printmaking, and assemblage.  

With more than 50 awards to her credit, she is a member of the New Haven Paint & Clay Club, the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, Connecticut Women Artists, the Guilford Art League and the Blue Ridge Mountain Art Association of Blue Ridge, Ga. 

In addition, Smith has taught art courses at Southern Connecticut State University and Housatonic Community College.  

A Norwalk native, she began her art studies at the Silvermine School of the Arts and Housatonic Community College. She went on to get her bachelor’s and master’s degree in studio art from Southern Connecticut State University. She also attended the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tenn. Her works are held in public and private art collections in the United States, Japan, and the Philippines.

Derby Neck Library to host sidewalk chalk art fun, contest


DERBY - Come join our [Derby Neck Library's]  first community art project!
Between July 1-3, youth of all ages are invited to decorate the sidewalk leading up to the library, 307 Hawthorne Ave. 
To take part, call the library during open hours to get a square number to work with, then stop by any time you'd like to decorate it! 
Fill in as much or as little of your square as you wish! 
Need chalk? Ask us during open hours, or borrow some from the bin by the side entrance. There’s also a contest for each age group for the most imaginative chalk drawing under the theme of Tails and Tales. 
Entries must be completed by 3 p.m. July 3 to be considered. 
Come help us make the library sidewalk into one big collaborative masterpiece!
