Center for Cancer Care at Griffin in Derby wins radiation oncology accreditation

DERBY - The Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital, 350 Seymour Ave., has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in radiation oncology as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

Radiation oncology (radiation therapy) is part of the cancer care team which uses precisely designed radiation to treat patients. Radiation therapy can be used as a curative treatment or to effectively relieve symptoms.

The ACR is the nation’s oldest and most widely accepted radiation oncology accrediting body, with over 600 accredited sites, and 27 years of accreditation experience. 

A department that receives accreditation has demonstrated that it adheres to rigorous safety and quality standards as part of their daily routine.

“We are very proud to be accredited by the American College of Radiology because it shows how much we value our patients’ safety and comfort when they come to us for care,” said Margaret Deegan, Vice President of Ambulatory Services.

Peer-review evaluation

The ACR seal of accreditation represents the highest level of quality and patient safety. 

It is awarded only to facilities meeting specific Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards developed by ACR after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified radiation oncologists and medical physicists who are experts in the field. 

Patient care and treatment, patient safety, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs are assessed. 

The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Radiation Oncology Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report they can use for continuous practice improvement.

Sports safety program planned at Derby Public Library

DERBY - The Derby Public Library, 313 Elizabeth St., will host "Sports Safety: It's Not Just for Athletes" at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Griffin Hospital will present an informational session on prevention and awareness of injuries common to active play. 
This program is not only for children in organized sports - safety is important for every child! 

Information will be presented on hydration, concussions, proper equipment, and first aid.
Children ages birth to 11, and parents and coaches of those in this age group are all welcome to attend.

This program is funded by Safe Kids Worldwide.
