From the 'Turnback Tuesday' archives: Derby-New Haven RR

This week's "Turnback Tuesday" features an image of Engine No. 1 from the Derby-New Haven Railroad.

The railway was originally chartered in 1864 to help facilitate transportation between New Haven and the Naugatuck Valley.

Although construction did not begin until 1867, there were several delays including one contractor quitting due to plans to extend the line past Derby into Ansonia. Nevertheless, the first full train of "proper New Haven citizens" arrived in Ansonia on August of 1871.

Stations were built in Orange, Tyler City, Derby, and Ansonia. The railway ceased operations in 1941.

Although most of the tracks and infrastructure was torn up, there are still remnants of it around CT. The abutment of one of its trestles remains on Derby-Milford Road.

Ansonia Police say deaths are apparent murder-suicide

ANSONIA - Ansonia Police said this afternoon the two suspicious deaths on Westfield Avenue reported earlier today were apparently the result of a murder-suicide.

Police said Yanis Tavarez, 47, of Bridgeport shot his ex-wife, Miguelina Lebron, 45, multiple times in the torso and then shot himself in the head. The shooting occurred in Lebron's residence, 180 Westfield Ave.

Police received a call of an assault shortly after 5 a.m. today. First officers on scene found a female and male inside the residence, both suffering from gunshot wounds. 

The female was shot multiple times in the torso. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment but succumbed to her injuries. 

The male was shot once in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Police said all the information to this point indicates the male shot the female multiple times before shooting himself. It appears the male forced entry into the home and confronted the female before shooting her, then himself, police said. 

There were two other people inside the residence, and police said they were not involved in the incident and were unharmed.

The Ansonia Police Department would like to thank the Connecticut State Police Central District Major Crimes, Derby Police Department, Seymour Police Department, the Department of Children and Families Milford Office, and Yale Trauma Clinical Services for their assistance during this investigation.

Ansonia Police probe 2 suspicious deaths on Westfield Avenue

ANSONIA - The Ansonia Police Department is currently investigating the suspicious deaths of two people in the 100 block of Westfield Avenue.

The investigation is active and ongoing; however, this is an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public, Lt. Patrick Lynch said in a written release at 11:04 a.m. today.
