Ansonia Police seeking info on 2 thefts of purses from cars

ANSONIA - Ansonia Police investigated two reports of purses stolen from cars this past weekend, one from Cumberland Farms on Pershing Drive and the other from Stop and Shop on Division Street, Lt. Patrick Lynch said this afternoon in a release.

On Saturday at about 11:55 a.m., a female in the Stop and Shop parking lot was putting groceries in her car when someone entered the unlocked front passenger door and took her purse.

The victim described the suspect as a black male, 5’10” tall wearing a black jacket and he was the passenger in a dark-colored SUV.

A review of the surveillance video showed a person wearing a black jacket exit the passenger side of a grey Jeep Cherokee enter the victim’s car then return to the Jeep and leave the area.

The Jeep had a New Jersey license plate, V67KHF, and had been reported stolen out of Stamford prior to this incident.

At about 7:25 a.m. Sunday, a female stopped for gas at the Cumberland Farms and when she got into her car after getting gas her purse was missing.

The victim did not see anyone enter her car. The surveillance video from the store showed a black Dodge Challenger in the lot pull up on the passenger side of the victim’s car. A passenger from the Dodge gets out and less than 15 seconds later gets back in the Dodge and leave the lot.

The quality of the video did not allow better description of the suspect or vehicle used by the suspect.

The department is asking anyone with information to please contact 203-735-1885 or tips can be left anonymously through TIP 411 at the link below.

DiBacco: 2 at Prendergast School in Ansonia test positive for COVID-19

Dear Parents and Guardians:
This morning, we were made aware that two individuals at Prendergast School have tested positive for COVID-19.
They were last in district on Jan. 28, 2021. All individuals with whom these individuals were in close contact have been notified and have been ordered to quarantine.
A sixth grade classroom and a first grade classroom will operate in a remote setting through Feb. 11 and will reopen on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2021. Prendergast School will remain open.
Under the District’s protocols, our school-based teams responded quickly to get the information needed to make the best decisions possible. While we cannot share the full details for privacy reasons, we can inform you that Ansonia Public Schools continues to work closely with the Naugatuck Valley Health District to perform contact tracing and quarantine close contacts to prevent the spread of the virus.
Quarantining as a result of close contact tracing is not an indication that someone has contracted the virus; it is simply a prudent and precautionary step.
We cannot oversell the fact that our best protection from broad transmission of COVID-19 within our schools and community is a knowledgeable and attentive population. You have a part to play in keeping everyone safe by performing a daily health screening.
Families should err on the side of caution when deciding whether or not to send children to school if symptoms develop. Health screening should happen each day with your child prior to sending them to school. You may always contact our nursing staff if you have questions or concerns.
We will keep you up-to-date on any further developments as they happen. We will also continue to follow all recommended safety protocols. Finally, please remain Ansonia Strong as we all face this national health crisis together.

Sincerely,
Joseph DiBacco, Ed. D.
Superintendent

Center for Cancer Care at Griffin to offer free breast cancer pre-screenings Thursday

DERBY - In recognition of World Cancer Day on Thursday, Feb. 4, the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital will offer free pre-screenings for breast cancer mammography.

World Cancer Day is the global initiative led by the Union for International Cancer Control that seeks to raise worldwide awareness, improve education and encourage personal, collective and government action for preventative health measures and improved access to life-saving cancer treatment and care.

In addition to recognizing this cause, this screening event is also part of Griffin’s commitment to help improve the health and well-being of its community.

The 2019-20 Community Health Improvement Plan for the Naugatuck Valley reports that the premature death rate for breast cancer in the Valley has declined at a faster rate than the state overall.

This is due in part to increased breast cancer screening throughout the area.

According to the American Cancer Society, many women age 40 and older are eligible for screening mammography. The appropriate age to start mammography and the frequency for testing varies based on individual risk factors

The pre-screening conducted by a breast cancer specialist over the phone and will help individuals understand breast cancer screening guidelines and when they should be screened, as well as genetic testing options.

Participants will be able to make an appointment for a breast cancer test if needed.

Spaces are limited. Call 203-732-1280 to make an appointment for the pre-screening phone call or for more information.
