'Turnback Tuesday' features photo of the Derby Narrows

Turnback Tuesday takes a look at the Derby Narrows section of Derby.

Looking at this photo, the Housatonic River would be to the left. In the back where the cupola on the large building and tall chimney are is the Derby Lumber Co., a very successful, large business.

The tracks are from the Naugatuck Railroad line heading north to Derby Junction. To the right and behind those buildings is Commerce Street. That is approximately where Gleason Performance is today.

The tall track-like structure just beyond the fence was used for transporting supplies that were taken from ships docked on the river.

Thanks goes to the Derby Public Library staff for sharing interesting local history each week!
