'Turnback Tuesday' (on Wednesday) highlights gun manufacturer in Derby

'Turnback Tuesday' is taking a peek at the Driggs-Seabury Gun and Ammunition Co.

The company was founded in 1897 by William H. Driggs and Samuel Seabury, both US Navy officers.

Their partnership also included William’s brother, Louis L. Driggs.

The plant and headquarters were located in Derby on Housatonic Avenue on the canal near the Oustonic Dam from 1897 to 1904, at which point they moved production to Sharon, Pa. They specialized in guns and ammunition for the Army and Navy during the Spanish-American War.

The U.S. Rapid Fire Gun and Power Co. acquired the plant after Driggs & Seabury left.

Thanks to the Derby Public Library staff for sharing interesting local history each week!
