Turnback Tuesday features downtown Derby manufacturer

'Turnback Tuesday': At the corner of Main & Caroline Streets in Derby was H. S. Sawyer and Sons.

In 1875, they started out as W. H. & C. D. Sawyer as millers with H. S. Sawyer as a cotton manufacturer.

In 1881, the name changed to H. S. Sawyer & Sons Millers, and again to Sawyer Mills in 1887, specializing in flour, feed, and meal.

The business did not last too much longer after that with the passing of W. H., and C.D. moving to New Haven.

Thanks to the Derby Public Library staff for sharing interesting local history each week.

Griffin Health in Oxford slates 4-week smoking cessation program

OXFORD -  Griffin Health offers free education, advice and support to help individuals prepare to quit smoking with its four-week smoking cessation program starting March 7.

“That’s It – Learn to Quit” teaches a variety of methods to help individuals quit smoking.

The program consists of Monday night meetings from 4:30-6 p.m. scheduled for March 7, 14, 21, and 28 at The Griffin Center for Healthy Living, Quarry Walk, 300 Oxford Road.

“The goal of the program is to help you learn how to quit,” said Richard Le Pera, a co-coordinator of the program. “There are different methods of quitting and managing nicotine withdrawal. If one method didn’t work for you in the past, we’ll help you understand all your options.”

Through group discussion and interactive activities, participants learn how to develop a quit plan that addresses their personal behaviors and habits.

Strategies to manage nicotine withdrawal, behaviors, triggers, and urges are discussed as well as weight control and stress management.

Participants must be prepared to attend all four sessions.

To register for “That’s It – Learn to Quit,” call 203-732-7106.
