Ansonia purchases VTD vehicle for use by senior center

ANSONIA - The Valley Transit District is replacing its 2012 Ford E-450 fleet as per Federal Transit Authority guidelines and Mayor David S. Cassetti and staff seized the opportunity to acquire the van.
Senior center director Jeff Coppola has identified the need for a van for seniors so more activities can be planned and to make transportation readily available for our seniors.

The Ford E-450 buses are all equipped with W/C lifts and meet all ADA requirements for passenger transportation. All VTD vehicles have followed strict preventative maintenance guidelines throughout their service as required by the Federal Transit Administration and the Connecticut Department of Transportation.
The van, which cost $5,000, was paid for with Economic Development Funds.
The van is being detailed and the City Seal will be placed on it.

Author to discuss moon landing, space race at Derby Neck Library

DERBY - Derby Neck Library will present a special program at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 12 celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.
All ages are invited as the Library welcomes author and photographer Kevin Woyce who will review the dramatic Space Race of that era.
Photographs and vintage art of the time will be used to relive the history Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions.
He will also discuss lesser known scientific missions that followed.
No registration is necessary.

End of Summer Pizza Party slated at Derby Neck Library
DERBY - Derby Neck Library, 307 Hawthorne Ave., will hold its End of Summer Pizza Party and Raffle at 3 p.m. Aug. 15.
"Join us for the wrap of our teen summer events featuring more great prizes that you can use raffle tickets to win. Everyone who attends will receive tickets to spend. There will be a bunch of options you can enter your tickets to win. Participants will draw from a hat for each prize. Those who don’t win can take their chances digging one prize from the mysterious 'sack of the weird.'

DERBY - The deadline for Derby Neck Library's Summer Reading Challenge is 8 p.m. Aug. 15.

DERBY - Derby Neck Library children's librarian Miss Kathi will host her SUMMER BEACH PARTY at 3:30 p.m. Aug. 14 and as always, all ages are invited to join in the fun.
Celebrate the end of the Children’s Summer Reading with kiddie pools, sand boxes, snacks, and the return of Mr. Bubbles.
Talk at Griffin Hospital in Derby to focus on minimally invasive hip surgery

DERBY - Griffin Hospital will offer a free presentation on minimally invasive hip replacement surgery at 5:45 p.m. Aug. 21.
Orthopedic surgeon Philip Minotti, M.D., will discuss the advanced direct anterior approach for hip replacement, which offers important advantages over standard surgical procedures. Direct anterior hip replacement patients generally experience less pain along with a shorter length of stay in the hospital and faster recovery.
Minotti will be available at the end of the presentation to answer questions.
These seminars are offered monthly at Griffin Hospital, 130 Division St. Refreshments will be served.
