Staff at Griffin Hospital in Derby sends scrubs to Spain

DERBY - Griffin Hospital and Griffin Bariatrics staff have sent their lightly-used scrubs to help care for abandoned and injured galgos, also known as Spanish hunting greyhounds, across the globe.

Ruth Tuccio, a unit clerk at Griffin and coordinator of the hospital’s therapy dog program People and Animals Working in Spirit (P.A.W.S.), organized the collection of scrubs for Galgos del Sol, a large rescue organization based in Murcia, Spain.
The scrubs will be used by volunteers when cleaning the dogs and their kennels, so that they don’t ruin their clothes.
In Spain, thousands of galgos are abandoned or killed annually at the end of each short hunting season.
As they are not always viewed as potential pets in the country, galgos usually end up in pounds, where their lives are often ended in inhumane ways.
Galgos del Sol rescues and rehabilitates them and finds them forever homes in the U.K., U.S., and Belgium.

For more information about Galgos del Sol, visit galgosdelsol.org.

Sharing 19th-century etching of Housatonic River

Artwork featured on the Derby Public Library Facebook page

This week's "Turnback Tuesday" features an etching of Birmingham circa 1848. It was done by N. Curtiss and was drawn from the perspective of the Huntington side of the Housatonic River. The steeples of the various churches of Birmingham can plainly be seen.

Ansonia Library to host talk by biographer of extraordinary warhorse

ANSONIA - When the U.S. Marine Fifth Regiment’s Recoilless Rifle Platoon acquired a small Korean pony to haul ammunition up the steep hills to the front lines, they got a real-life warhorse.

The courageous and indomitable horse called Reckless stood with her buddies for two years during the Korean War, saving lives, raising spirits, and winning the love and respect of all who knew her.

The story of Reckless and her war duty, as well as her hero’s welcome after the Korean War, are recounted by Connecticut author Janet Barrett.

Barrett interviewed more than 60 Marines who knew Reckless in Korea, and put their stories together as the first full-length biography of this remarkable horse: They Called Her Reckless: A True Story of War, Love, and One Extraordinary Horse.

Barrett shares the story of Reckless at 6 p.m. May 19 at Ansonia Library, 53 S. Cliff St.
This program is free and open to all.
