Greater Valley Salvation Army staff, supporters celebrate pantry reopening

Salvation Army Capt. Cheryl McCollum, left, poses at the grand reopening with Sheila Uberia, social service caseworker at the pantry.

ANSONIA - I attended a wonderful community celebration last week - the grand reopening of the newly remodeled pantry at the Greater Valley Salvation Army.

The Corps' headquarters is located at 26 Lester St. As an Advisory Board member I'm pleased to say I've witnessed many improvements made there over the years, most recently the remodeled pantry.

Capt. Cheryl McCollum deserves plaudits for her dedication to turning dreams into reality!

In a brief program in the sanctuary prior to the ribbon cutting, she described the pantry makeover including "a fresh coat of paint which does wonders," new freezers, shelving, and seating. McCollum said the client choice pantry offers a more dignified experience for those who receive food assistance. She said $8,000 went into the project and expressed gratitude for the needed upgrades.

Mayor David S. Cassetti reminded attendees that it's "very, very important that we take care of the vulnerable."

The event also included the 'Kettle Kickoff' for the upcoming holiday season.

McCollum said before a ribbon cutting that volunteers are needed this holiday season to ring the bells at kettles that will be located outside stores throughout the Valley.

Posting Halloween safety tips for trick or treaters tonight

🎃
Top Tips for Halloween Safety:
🎃 Carry glow sticks or flashlights, use reflective tape or stickers on costumes and bags, and wear light colors to help kids see and be seen by drivers.

🎃 Join kids under age 12 for trick-or-treating.

🎃 Slow down and be alert! Kids are excited on Halloween and may dart into the street.

🎃 Turn on headlights early in the day to spot kids from further away.

🎃 Remind kids to cross the street at corners or crosswalks.

🎃 When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls.

🎃 Choose face paint over masks when possible. Masks can limit children’s vision.
