Sofferman family to hold 36th annual turkey drive for Spooner House in Shelton

SHELTON - It’s almost time to make your annual pilgrimage to our frozen turkey and canned-food drive, benefitting Spooner House in Shelton!

The Sofferman Pilgrim Family and Brendan Carey as “The Turkey” will be outside in full costume collecting your donations at our office.

This year’s goal is to prepare 750 meal baskets, piled high with turkeys and all the trimmings!

Any donation you can make goes a long way. Simply pull up, pop the trunk, and we’ll help remove your frozen turkey and/or non-perishable food items from the car!

Don’t miss Chaz from 99.1 PLR on event day!

Greater Valley Salvation Army staff, supporters celebrate pantry reopening

Salvation Army Capt. Cheryl McCollum, left, poses at the grand reopening with Sheila Uberia, social service caseworker at the pantry.

ANSONIA - I attended a wonderful community celebration last week - the grand reopening of the newly remodeled pantry at the Greater Valley Salvation Army.

The Corps' headquarters is located at 26 Lester St. As an Advisory Board member I'm pleased to say I've witnessed many improvements made there over the years, most recently the remodeled pantry.

Capt. Cheryl McCollum deserves plaudits for her dedication to turning dreams into reality!

In a brief program in the sanctuary prior to the ribbon cutting, she described the pantry makeover including "a fresh coat of paint which does wonders," new freezers, shelving, and seating. McCollum said the client choice pantry offers a more dignified experience for those who receive food assistance. She said $8,000 went into the project and expressed gratitude for the needed upgrades.

Mayor David S. Cassetti reminded attendees that it's "very, very important that we take care of the vulnerable."

McCollum surrounded by supporters of the Salvation Army.

The event also included the 'Kettle Kickoff' for the upcoming holiday season.

McCollum said before a ribbon cutting that volunteers are needed this holiday season to ring the bells at kettles that will be located outside stores throughout the Valley.

To volunteer to help with bell ringing call 203-736-0707.
