'Turnback Tuesday' (on Wednesday) features Ousatonic Water Co. Dam
Turnback Tuesday travels up river to the Ousatonic Water Co. Dam.
Organized in 1866 with Edward N. Shelton as president, the Dam was dedicated across the Housatonic River in 1870 with a short canal on the Derby side and a mile-long canal on the Shelton side.
A lock was also located on the Shelton side to allow shipping to bypass the dam. Gatehouses were on either side to control the water flow. Once this dam was constructed, industry soon followed. Photo taken prior to 1891.
Thanks goes to the Derby Public Library staff for sharing interesting local history each week.
