ANSONIA - Police Sunday arrested Melvin Burroughs, 33, of Ansonia for his involvement in a shooting that day on Sixth Street. 

Burroughs had been in a verbal dispute with two other males when Burroughs allegedly fired multiple shots at them, Lt. Patrick Lynch said in a written statement. 


No one was struck by the gunshots; however, a vehicle, shed, and garbage cans were struck by the gunfire. 

Burroughs is a convicted felon and prohibited from owning or possessing firearms. 

Burroughs was charged with two counts of Criminal Attempt at Assault First Degree, two counts of Reckless Endangerment First Degree, Threatening First Degree, Unlawful Discharge, Criminal Use of a Firearm, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, and Criminal Mischief Third Degree. Burroughs posted a $150,000 bond and will be arraigned in Milford Superior Court April 12.

 

During a search warrant at Burroughs’ residence, officers and detectives recovered three handguns, an AR15 rifle, a flame-thrower, assorted ammunition and gun parts. Additional charges are expected to be filed against Burroughs related to the firearms recovered during the search of his residence.

DERBY - BHcare and the Derby Youth Service Bureau are hosting a series of workshops for parents.
Next week's will cover current drug trends, including prescribed opioids.


Derby Public Library to host online origami seed pot program

DERBY - Celebrate Earth Day by making a newspaper origami seed pot! 
This online event hosted by Derby Public Library is scheduled for 11 a.m. April 10.
In less than an hour, all ages can learn to make biodegradable seedling pots that you can plant right in the ground once your seeds are ready. 
Perfect for tomatoes and other fragile plants. Instructor Dawn Zillich leads this virtual program that will be held via Zoom.

No experience necessary. Maximum 15 attendees. Best suited for grades 5 and older.

Griffin Health in Derby to host foot wellness clinic at hospital

DERBY - Griffin Health will host a Comprehensive Foot Wellness Clinic March 26 from 9 a.m.-noon at Griffin Hospital, 130 Division St.

Registrants will receive a detailed bio-mechanical foot examination by board-certified pedorthists from STRIDE® Pedorthic Center in Middlebury. This examination can identify the causes of an individual's foot pain, the injuries to which they are most susceptible, and develop orthotics to help relieve foot ailments.

Additionally, staff members from Griffin’s Comprehensive Wound Healing Center will be available to help diagnose potential diabetic foot problems and recommend treatments.

Event registration and the diabetic foot screening are free, but interested individuals should bring their insurance information to participate in the bio-mechanical foot examination and orthotic fitting.

Huntington Branch Library to host origami class Tuesday via Zoom

SHELTON - Kids of all ages can join Miss Jessica and learn how to fold different things using the Japanese art of origami!
Each week we will try to make 1-3 different origami crafts, depending on time.
To participate, you should be prepared with origami paper (Miss Jessica is using 6x6 inch paper) OR you can make your own origami paper at home using printer paper that has been cut into a SQUARE.
Participants must register with an email address to receive a Zoom link and password.

Recuperation journey: Chilly morning


  Happy Monday. It's still winter (until Saturday).

Ansonia Police probe Sixth Street shooting; suspect in custody

ANSONIA - Gunfire erupted at 4 p.m. Sunday on Sixth Street, Ansonia Police Lt. Patrick Lynch said in a release late Sunday.


During the initial investigation officers learned  several people were involved in a verbal dispute when one of the people began to shoot at the others. 

No one was struck by the gunfire and the suspect was taken into custody without incident. The investigation is still ongoing and the identity of the suspect will be released [today], Lynch said.

The shooting appears to be an isolated incident and there is no danger to the community.
