From the 'Turnback Tuesday' archives: 1st Derby school superintendent

This week's "Turnback Tuesday" features J.W. Peck - the first superintendent of Derby Public Schools.

Mr. Peck is the gentleman on the right in the short, dark coat. He worked in the Derby school system for 33 years, 18 of which serving as superintendent. When he retired in 1912, he was named Superintendent-Emeritus at a salary of $1,000.

Peck was born on Feb.10,1852 in Trumbull and died Aug.16,1917 at the age of 65.

Derby Board of Education to hold workshop Tuesday on excess cost funding

DERBY - The Board of Education is inviting the public to participate in an informational session covering Excess Cost Funding at 6 p.m.Tuesday.

The board is hosting a 30-minute workshop where members of the public will have the opportunity to hear from a number of state representatives and gain a deeper understanding of how the current Excess Cost Funding formula is impacting our district.

Planning to attend are state Representatives Nicole Klarides-Ditria, Mary Welander, Kara Rochelle, state Sen. Jorge Cabrera, and Co-Chair of the Legislative Education Committee, Jeff Currey - along with members of the Derby Board of Education and Superintendent of  Schools Dr. Matthew J. Conway, Jr.

Derby Board of Education Chairman Jim Gildea said, "Each child who is a part of the Derby public school family deserves to be educated. As part of that charge, we have seen our special  education costs rise significantly through the years. We feel that now more than ever we as a school system need to work with our area legislators towards ensuring that Derby receives their full share of the excess cost grant and the special education assistance we need. Our special education forum on Tuesday is one small step towards beginning the collaboration process with our
legislative delegation."

Conway said, "The state has historically underfunded the excess cost grant, leaving
municipalities with the extreme financial burden of costs for special education programs. This is an unsustainable model that unfairly impacts economically distressed municipalities with a high transient population."

CABE presents Derby Board of Education with award for team work

DERBY - The Board of Education has been recognized once again by the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education for exhibiting the most effective leadership, characterized by their ability to work together as a “team.” 

The CABE Board Recognition Awards are designed to recognize boards that provide effective leadership to their districts with good practices. 

This program acknowledges the importance of school board members and superintendents working together as effective teams and continues an important trend among school board associations across the country. 

CABE’s Board Leadership Award assesses 34 items in areas of Leadership/Student Achievement, Board Member Professional Development, Policy, Community Relations and Organizational Leadership, and Boards who apply must fulfill a minimum of 22 items across these categories to qualify. 

Superintendent Dr. Matthew J. Conway, Jr., said, “In the preceding year, our Board has steadfastly focused on establishing an inclusive process for crafting our new 5-year strategic plan, with a commitment to ensuring that every voice is not only heard but genuinely considered. Paramount in their priorities has been the assurance of safety and security within our schools, thereby safeguarding the well-being of all staff and students. 

"Furthermore, there has been a concerted effort to refine our coaching model, tailoring support to the distinctive teaching needs of our exceptional and amazing educators. The Board has exemplified the precise leadership necessary for fostering the growth of our district, educators, and, most importantly, our students. 

"We extend our heartfelt gratitude for their dedicated time, tireless effort, invaluable input, and unwavering support throughout this transformative journey,” Conway said.

2 Derby Board of Education members win recognition

Laura Harris  Daniel P. Foley, Jr. DERBY - Board of Education member Laura Harris recently achieved the level of Master Board of Education Member in the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education (CABE) Board Member Academy for the 2022-2023 school year.  Daniel P. Foley, Jr., Vice-Chair of the Derby Board of Education achieved the level of Certificated Board of Education Member. Harris was one of three board of education members recognized for their achievement in attaining this level by participating in numerous hours of board-related professional development activities for the 2022-2023 school year.  To achieve the Master Board of Education level, a board member must first accumulate at least 20 credits, becoming a Certificated Board of Education member. The Master Board of Education member must earn an additional 20 credits beyond the CBEM level.  The areas of study are leadership, effective meetings, school/community relations, strategic planning, group dynamics, board member ethics, school finance, labor relations, and school law. Foley earned CABE’s Certificated Board of Education Member designation.  Through his attendance at numerous CABE/CAPSS Conventions and workshops has acquired a wide variety of skill, knowledge, and ability.  To achieve the Certificated Board of Education member status he had to acquire 20 credits in the areas of board relations, policy, curriculum, school finance, school law, labor relations, and board operations. Board of Education Chairman Jim Gildea said, “Mrs. Harris and Mr. Foley are among the most engaged members that I have served with over the course of my 26 years on the Derby Board of Education. They always take the time to be the best members they can be, constantly improving as board members and participating in all

available learning opportunities. The Derby Board of Education is better because of their participation and representation. Derby Public Schools selects 2024 District Teacher of the Year

DERBY - The Derby Public Schools has selected Jessica Yanes as the 2024 District Teacher of the Year.

The Connecticut Teacher of the Year Program is one of the oldest and most prestigious recognition programs to focus public attention on excellence in teaching.

Jessica is part of the Derby High School family teaching English to students in 9th grade. 

Derby High School Principal Jennifer Olson said, “Jessie has made a tremendous impact at Derby High School. She is a strong member of both the Freshman Academy team and the English Department. She works tirelessly to help our ninth-graders transition successfully to high school by setting high expectations, using engaging instructional protocols, and communicating regularly with families. She always works to encourage and motivate her students to do their best. 

"This year, Jessie co-taught a new Journalism course and revived the Derby High School newspaper, The Raider Press. Her students have written a series of high-quality articles, and have interviewed a wide-range of people, with different perspectives to create interesting news stories for our school community. We are very happy that Jessie received this recognition and look forward to her continued contributions to the Derby community.”

Mrs. Yanes said, “I'm honored and humbled to be recognized as Derby's Teacher of the Year, especially because there are so many talented, dedicated teachers in this district who deserve to be celebrated. Every day, I see my colleagues supporting their students to be the best version of themselves, and every day, those colleagues inspire me to do the same.”

Derby schools select Aimee Curtis as Paraeducator of the Year

4 Derby students receive CABE Student Leadership Awards

DERBY - The Board of Education and Superintendent Dr. Matthew J. Conway Jr., recently recognized four students for receiving the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education Student Leadership Awards. 

These students received this award for their leadership, specifically in the areas of taking on challenges, making difficult decisions, concern for others, working well with others, and diplomacy.

Derby High School students Cayla Cayer-McCarthy and Alysa Cayer-McCarthy, along with two students from Derby Middle School, Alexandra Karaleva and Colton Shields, were recognized at the May 2 Board of Education meeting. 

Board chairman Jim Gildea said, “On behalf of the Derby Board of Education I would like to congratulate the students who have received the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education Student Leadership Awards. Our school system continues to produce positive results and outstanding students. These students are well deserving of this award as they have shown a consistent ability to be outstanding students, leaders, and well-rounded individuals. Our students continually show just how special of a place the Derby School system is. These students are certainly well deserving and we are proud of them.”

Conway said, “Receiving this recognition is a testimony to their ability to work with others, lead with others and set the standard for all. These are leadership skills they model in everything they do in school at home and in this great community.”

CABE Area 7 Director and Board of Education member George Kurtyka said, “The CABE Student Leadership Awards Program is designed to honor Connecticut High School and Middle School students who exhibit exemplary leadership skills. Two students from each school, in a CABE member district, are eligible to receive the CABE Student Leadership Award.

Derby administrator selected as CT Middle School Principal of the Year

DERBY - Derby Public Schools has announced that Derby Middle School Principal Rachael Caggiano has been selected as the 2023 Connecticut Middle School Principal of the Year. 

The Connecticut Association of Schools has awarded this prestigious honor to Caggiano in recognition of her outstanding leadership, dedication, and commitment to excellence in education.

Caggiano has been with Derby Public Schools since 2011, and has served as the middle school principal since 2018. 

During her tenure, she has demonstrated a deep commitment to creating a positive learning environment for all students and staff, fostering a culture of inclusion and promoting student and staff success both in and out of the classroom.

Under Caggiano's leadership, Derby Middle School has seen improvements in student achievement, particularly in the areas of literacy and math education. 

Of the 16 schools across the state in the Commissioner’s Network of schools, Derby Middle School students had the highest percent of target achieved in both English language arts and mathematics scores. 

Derby Middle School Students also had the highest English Language Arts year over year growth from 2018-2019 to 2021-2022 with a 5.5 point gain. She has also implemented innovative programs to support our Positive Behavior Intervention and Support program such as  school-wide RISE Rallies and a KickBoard Store.

Most recently she was recognized by Harvard’s Graduate School of Education for her part in creating an in-school Learning Lab for staff and kids to collaborate, share, create and learn. "Principal Caggiano is an exceptional leader who has made a significant impact on the lives of our students, families, and staff," said Matt Conway, Superintendent of Schools. "Such a well deserved recognition and we are beyond proud to have her as part of our Derby Schools, this great city and the Derby Family. Principal Caggiano not only builds relationships, she builds the capacity of everyone around her. She makes us all better."

Caggiano said, “I am incredibly honored and humbled to receive this recognition. I am grateful to work with such a dedicated team of educators who are committed to providing our students with a high-quality education and a positive school experience. This award is a testament to our hard work and the incredible students we have the privilege of serving.”

Board Chairman Jim Gildea said, “This is just one more example of the amazing school system that we have here in Derby. Rachael is just that shining star who operates at an extremely high level. For those of us who work with Rachael day in and day out, this certainly comes as no surprise. She is easily able to connect with all of the various stakeholders that she must work with, whether it is the community, parents, staff and most importantly the students who are placed in her charge each and every day. Rachael forms deep and meaningful bonds with whomever she works with and it is evident in the relationships that she builds and the outcomes that she achieves. Luke Camara, Derby Middle School Student Council President and National Junior Honor Society President said," I am very proud of Mrs. Caggiano for receiving such a remarkable title. Over the years I've attended Derby Middle School, Mrs. Caggiano has treated myself and others with the utmost love and respect. I am not surprised by any means that she has won this award, because she works day in and day out to make sure every single one of her student's has an enjoyable learning experience. This award not only reflects who Mrs. Caggiano is, but our school district as a whole. I cannot stress how happy I am for Mrs. Caggiano.”

As the Connecticut Middle School Principal of the Year, she will be recognized at the CAS Annual Conference in October 2023.

Derby Public Schools names 2023 District Paraeducator of the Year

DERBY - The Derby Public Schools has selected Steven Horvath as the 2023 District Paraeducator of the Year.

The Connecticut State Department of Education and the School Paraprofessional Advisory Council has established the Anne Marie Murphy Paraeducator of the Year Program to recognize the important role of the Paraeducator in supporting student achievement. 

The award is named in honor of Anne Marie Murphy, a Paraeducator who was killed in the Sandy Hook shooting.

When asked how he feels about being selected Steve said, “Being named the 2023 District Paraeducator of the Year is one of the greatest achievements in my life. I could not be any luckier or happier. Each and every person I have the privilege of sharing my time with at Derby Middle School is remarkable. The children and the adults make me a better person every single day. When I first started, I never imagined myself in this position. Now, I couldn’t imagine my life without it. I am more thankful to the district of Derby and Derby Middle School than any words could ever hope to describe.”

Horvath has been a learning center Paraeducator at Derby Middle School since March of 2019. He is a graduate of Southern Connecticut State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. He went on to receive certification in Psychological and Physical Management Training and RBT Foundational Training. He is an active participant in Best Buddies, Unified Sports, and the Derby Running Club!

James Nichols, Supervisor of Special Education said, “Mr. Horvath is the kind of person that embodies commitment to and pride in working with students. I know that wherever and whenever he is needed, he will greet any assignment with a smile and a positive attitude. He’s undoubtedly here for the kids and gives 110% every day. Congratulations on being recognized as Derby Middle School and Derby Public Schools’ Paraeducator of the Year!”

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Matthew Conway, said, “Mr. Horvath embodies everything you want in someone who supports our kids and teachers. He is compassionate. He shows care. He sets expectations and a supportive path to meet them. He gives others confidence in themselves to succeed inside and outside of the classroom. DERBY - Derby Public Schools has selected Joshua Dydyn as the 2023 District Teacher of the Year.

The Connecticut Teacher of the Year Program is one of the oldest and most prestigious recognition programs to focus public attention on excellence in teaching. 

Joshua is part of the Derby Middle School family teaching physical education to students in grades 6-8. Derby Middle School Principal Rachael Caggiano said, “Joshua has a tireless work ethic, impeccable attitude, and his ability to teach all skill levels is unmatched. He goes above and beyond his typical duties and is an active participant in programs like Unified Sports. He is a basketball coach and continuously works to help student athletes become their best both on and off the court, holding all students accountable for their actions and attitudes. Mr. Dydyn always lends a helping hand. He is in consistent communication with parents and ensures students in his class are successful. He is an excellent coach and mentor. Josh is beloved by all, students and staff included. His positive attitude is infectious."

Upon hearing about his selection as District Teacher of the Year Dydyn said, “I am honored to have received the District Teacher of The Year award for Derby Public Schools. I want to thank everyone for this award especially my colleagues, my family, administration, and of course my students who inspire me every day.”

Derby Board of Education recognizes 7 students

DERBY - At a recent meeting of the Committee of the Whole the Derby Board of Education  recognized seven students.

Isabelle Chevarella, a grade 12 student at Derby High School, has been selected to receive the SCASA Memorial Scholarship. 

This scholarship is given in honor of former Hamden Superintendent Dr. Alida Begina and former East Haven Superintendent Martin DeFelice, Jr. 

The scholarship is awarded to students who intend to major in education and work in K-12 public education, who have demonstrated involvement in the education field, e.g. tutoring, peer advising, or student teacher club, etc., who has demonstrated high academic achievement of a G.P.A. of at least 3.0 and is a student of high moral character. 

In Isabelle’s essay to the committee for consideration she references her father as her influencing factor in her decision to pursue education stating, “His passion for teaching and putting his students first has motivated me to follow in his footsteps.” 

Isabelle plans to major in history education.

The Board also recognized six of our students who received the SCASA Student Recognition Award. 

The award is presented to a female and male student at the highest level in each school who exhibit the following criteria: community service and service to others; academic prowess relative to ability; and leadership to the school community. 

The Board recognized Brianne Fernandez, Grade 5, Bradley School; Eduar Barillas, Grade 5, Irving School; Gianna Akter, Grade 8, Derby Middle School; Joseph Izquierdo, Grade 8, Derby Middle School; Destiny Lewis, Grade 12, Derby High School; and Bryce Cotter, Grade 12, Derby High School.

Dr. Matthew J. Conway, Jr, Superintendent of Schools and President of SCASA aid, “It is always exciting to call out and recognize the incredible attributes of our students and share with the world the great things they are doing every day to be impactful both in school and our community. The scholarship award is especially meaningful because of what it represents; honoring the past contributions of both Dr. Begina and Martin DeFelice, Jr. while supporting future leaders as they embark on the rewarding journey.”

Jim Gildea, Board of Education Chairman said, “The Derby school system is fortunate to have such an amazing group of students. Their accomplishments are special and deserving of recognition. They are the best that the Derby school system has to offer and we are proud of them.”
