Derby names District Paraeducator of the Year

The Connecticut State Department and the School Paraprofessional Advisory Council established the Anne Marie Murphy Paraeducator of the Year Program to recognize the
important role of the Paraeducator in supporting student achievement.
The award is named in honor of Anne Marie Murphy, a Paraeducator who was killed in the Sandy Hook shooting.
Alyssa joined Little Raiders University family in December of 2015. She is a 2011 graduate of Derby High School.
Early Childhood Director Alison Conway said, “Alyssa is a tremendous asset to our school. She is dedicated, caring, and committed to working with our students. Her love of students and desire to see them succeed is evident in everything she does. Alyssa is very deserving of this outstanding recognition.”
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Matthew J. Conway, Jr. said, “Alyssa represents and defines what Paraeducators do for our children. She is relentless in her support of all children and goes above and beyond expectations to meet their needs.”
Jim Gildea, Chairman of the Board of Education said, “Early learning is such a critical factor in the success of all children and the students of Little Raider University are so very fortunate to have someone as talented and committed as Alyssa interacting with them daily. She is forging critical relationships and impacting children’s lives for years to come. We are all very fortunate to have someone with Alyssa’s dedication in the Derby school system. We congratulate her on being awarded Paraeducator of the Year.”

DERBY - Derby Public Schools has selected Melissa Stevens as the 2019 District Paraeducator of the
Year.
The Connecticut state Department of Education and the School Paraprofessional Advisory Council has established the Anne Marie Murphy Paraeducator of the Year Program to recognize the important role of the Paraeducator in supporting student achievement.
The award is named in honor of Anne Marie Murphy, a Paraeducator who was killed in the Sandy Hook shooting.
Irving School Principal Jennifer Olson said, “Melissa is an outstanding Paraeducator who has worked in the District’s Behavior Learning Center the past two years.
"Her enthusiasm for teaching shows daily in her interactions with students and other staff in the building. No matter how challenging the day is Melissa is always positive and encouraging to the students to do their best.
"Not only is Melissa a wonderful role model for our students, the relationships she has developed with staff members here at Irving School are supportive and caring. In the classroom, she is always willing to jump in and help where needed including toilet training students, working one-to-one, completing DTI sessions or volunteering to cover a class when needed.
"Her kindness, compassion, and patience has allowed students to make major gains socially, academically and behaviorally. Melissa is very deserving of this outstanding recognition.”

Derby Public Schools selected Pamela Stoll as the 2018 District Paraeducator of the
Year.

“Pam is a tremendous asset to our school. She is dedicated, caring and committed to working with our students. In the classroom, Pam supports teaching and learning and provides direct instruction to students in reading and math during small groups. Her love of students and desire to see them succeed is evident in everything she does. Pam is very deserving of this outstanding recognition,” Principal Jennifer Olson said.
“In addition to working in the classroom, Mrs. Stoll runs the morning breakfast program. She makes sure that students start their day off right. She notices if a student needs some extra attention or someone to talk to when they get here and makes sure they are taken care of before going to class,” said Candy Lebel, Grade 2 teacher.

Bradley School educator named Derby Teacher of the Year

DERBY - Bradley School is proud to announce that Karen Marrone is the
2017 Derby Public School Teacher of the Year.
Marrone is an excellent educator who has made a significant positive impact on the students and staff at Bradley School.
In her previous role as the learning center teacher, Karen worked in a challenging environment to support her students both socially and emotionally.
This past year Marrone transitioned to the resource reading teacher for grades 3-5. Thanks to her efforts, her students have seen incredible growth in their reading proficiency in the resource room and general education classroom.
Marrone collaborates with peers on a regular basis to help meet the needs of the students she works with. She has been a valuable member of the school literacy leadership team, which brings about positive change for all students in the areas of reading and writing. She shares her knowledge with peers and is always open to ideas and strategies from others.
Unified sports program
In addition to her work in the classroom, Marrone has been the leader for the Bradley School Unified Sports program; helping students with disabilities build positive relationships with typical peers through play and team building.
Marrone can also be seen on a regular basis helping sell tickets at Derby High School games and working with students during the summer though the district’s extended school year program.
Marrone is a true role model for her students and colleagues. She approaches her work with a constant smile and positive attitude, and her approach with young people has resulted in positive gains for students.
Marrone will be honored at a ceremony Aug. 25 when the district’s teachers return to school for professional development activities.
She also will be honored at the annual statewide awards ceremony Nov. 10 at The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts in Hartford.

Also to be honored Aug. 25 are three other teachers chosen as Teacher of the Year at their individual schools.
They are: Jennifer Lucas, music teacher at Irving Elementary School; Kelly Anroman, Grade 8 English teacher at Derby Middle School; and Veronica DiLullo, business teacher at Derby High School.
In addition, Paraeducators of the Year will be honored. They are: Elise Campbell, Irving School; Joyce Dobek, Bradley School; and Lisa Neuman, Little Raider University. Campbell has been chosen as the District’s Paraeducator of the Year.

Derby selects 2017 Paraeducator of the Year

DERBY - The Derby Public Schools has selected Elise Campbell as its 2017 District Paraeducator of the Year.
The Connecticut State Department and the School Paraprofessional Advisory Council has established the Anne Marie Murphy Paraeducator of the Year Program to recognize the important role of the Paraeducator in supporting student achievement.
The award is named in honor of Anne Marie Murphy, a Paraeducator who was killed in the Sandy Hook shooting.

Campbell has been a Paraeducator at Irving School in Derby for 10.5 years and currently works in the grade 3-5 Learning Center.
She was chosen to receive this award because she has demonstrated excellent skill and dedication to the students, teachers, administrators, co-workers, and parents of Derby.

According to the nomination written by Elise Chambers, Special Education teacher, "the students appreciate Mrs. Campbell's warm, positive, and respectful manner. When we break in to small groups after a whole class discussion, I can always count on Mrs. Campbell to carry out the lesson as planned in a way that works best for the students."
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Matthew Conway said,"Ms. Campbell wrote the book on how to personalize education for our most challenging young students. Her ability to adapt and deliver learning to meet each student's needs is remarkable."
Campbell will be recognized at a ceremony on Oct. 13.
