Klarides-Ditria shares info about disaster assistance in response to flooding

Friends and neighbors,

A major disaster declaration has been approved in response to the August 18 extreme flooding in our area.

Residents and business owners who sustained losses in the designated areas can begin applying for assistance by clicking the button below, by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362), or by using the FEMA app.

Disaster Assistance

Federal assistance could include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners.

The state, FEMA and SBA are currently identifying locations in the impacted counties to open disaster recovery & business recovery centers that will provide in-person support to help affected individuals apply for assistance.

SBA Opens Business Recovery Centers

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has opened Business Recovery Centers (BRC) in Oxford, at the Oxford Town Hall, and in Monroe, at the Monroe Police Department, to assist businesses with losses due to severe storm, flooding, landslides and mudslides. The disaster declaration covers Fairfield, Litchfield and New Haven counties which are eligible for both Physical and Economic Injury Disaster Loans from the SBA.

SBA’s Customer Service Representatives can assist business owners complete their disaster loan application, accept documents, and provide updates on an application’s status.

Walk-ins are accepted, but you can schedule an in-person appointment at an SBA Business Recovery Center in advance.

Application Filing Deadlines:

Physical Damage: November 19, 2024

Economic Injury: June 20, 2025

What Types of Disaster Loans are Available?

Business Physical Disaster Loans – Loans to businesses to repair or replace disaster-damaged property owned by the business, including real estate, inventories, supplies, machinery and equipment. Businesses of any size are eligible. Private, non-profit organizations such as charities, churches, private universities, etc., are also eligible.
Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL) – Working capital loans to help small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture, and most private, non-profit organizations of all sizes meet their ordinary and necessary financial obligations that cannot be met as a direct result of the disaster. These loans are intended to assist through the disaster recovery period.
Home Disaster Loans – Loans to homeowners or renters to repair or replace disaster-damaged real estate and personal property, including automobiles.

What are the Credit Requirements?

• Credit History – Applicants must have a credit history acceptable to SBA.

• Repayment – Applicants must show the ability to repay all loans.

Whodunnit? Derby Neck Library to host murder mystery dinner

DERBY - There's a mystery unfolding at Derby Neck, and you're invited to be a part of it!

Join us Friday, Oct. 18 for a fully immersive murder mystery dinner theater event. Attendees will enjoy a catered dinner and dessert in the Community Room while taking in a short film by the DNL Film Production Club.

After dinner, it's up to you to figure out whodunnit. Search the library for clues, decipher puzzles and codes, and talk to the characters, live and in person.

Tickets are $35 and include dinner and entertainment for adults 18+. Every ticket sold means more funding for your favorite programs, collections, and services!

The Library is at 307 Hawthorne Ave.

SEYMOUR - Join Miss Jess at Seymour Public Library for a pre-K story time with stories, songs, and dancing! Perfect for ages 3-6.

From the 'Turnback Tuesday' archives: Vintage postcard for State of CT

This week's "Turnback Tuesday" features this postcard for the State of Connecticut.

In the top right-hand corner is a part of the Great Seal of the State of CT.

The three grape vines support and bear fruit while the ribbon below contains the Latin Motto “Qui Transtulit Sustinet” which means “He who transplanted sustains.”

This has been a part of the seal since May of 1784.

Shelton Historical Society to host Harvest Fun event Oct. 20

SHELTON - Come in costume - or not - to Shelton Historical Society’s Harvest Fun on Oct. 20.

The outdoor event will offer a costume parade, games for all ages, pumpkin painting, prizes, and refreshments at Shelton History Center, 70 Ripton Road. Hours are 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
Once inside the admission area, visitors will receive a schedule of activities, be able to play several games of skill on their own (or challenge each other), or take part in old-fashioned contests such as pie and donut eating competitions.

All ages are encouraged to don a costume and take part in a costume parade, which will start promptly at 12:45 p.m., around the grounds for all to admire.

The Trap Falls School, the Wilson Barn, and other agricultural outbuildings will be open for viewing and learning. Refreshments will be available.

Admission is $5 for individuals 6 and older, and free for children under 5.

Proceeds benefit the programs of the Shelton Historical Society, whose mission is to create connections between Shelton’s past, present, and future through education, preservation, and advocacy on matters of historical importance in our community.

Traffic Advisory: Construction Alert

Attention, drivers! Please be aware of construction at the intersection of Main Street, N. Main Street, State Street, and East Main Street in Ansonia. Expect delays and lane closures in the area.

This construction is expected to continue into next week. We strongly recommend using alternate routes to avoid congestion.
