Shelton Historical Society to host Harvest Fun event Oct. 20

SHELTON - Come in costume - or not - to Shelton Historical Society’s Harvest Fun on Oct. 20.  

The outdoor event will offer a costume parade, games for all ages, pumpkin painting, prizes, and refreshments at Shelton History Center, 70 Ripton Road. Hours are 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
Once inside the admission area, visitors will receive a schedule of activities, be able to play several games of skill on their own (or challenge each other), or take part in old-fashioned contests such as pie and donut eating competitions. 
All ages are encouraged to don a costume and take part in a costume parade, which will start promptly at 12:45 p.m., around the grounds for all to admire. 
The Trap Falls School, the Wilson Barn, and other agricultural outbuildings will be open for viewing and learning. Refreshments will be available.  

Admission is $5 for individuals 6 and older, and free for children under 5.  
Proceeds benefit the programs of the Shelton Historical Society, whose mission is to create connections between Shelton’s past, present, and future through education, preservation, and advocacy on matters of historical importance in our community.

Save the date: Ansonia Nature Center to hold annual Autumn Festival

Saturday, Oct. 19

Autumn time is here, and the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center invites you to their annual Autumn Festival. 

Attractions include horse-drawn wagon rides, pumpkin painting, crafts, face-painting, raffles, a haunted trail walk, carnival games, animal shows, petting zoo, vendors, food trucks, and more!

NO park admission fee. Rain date is Oct. 20. Sponsored in part by the Friends of the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center and the City of Ansonia.

Yes! We welcome donations, and will be accepting raffle items up until Sunday the 15th. When you drop items off at the Nature Center, be sure to fill out the Donation Log sheet! There will NOT be a Bake Sale this year!

Forecast forces date change for Ansonia Nature Center Autumn Festival


Due to forecasted weather, our Autumn Festival will be held Sunday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. 
Unfortunately, this means there will be no wagon rides this year. 
However, there is still lots to do at Autumn Fest! Come check out our vendors, exhibitors, food trucks, raffle, carnival games, pumpkin painting, cider and donuts, live animal shows, and more!


*The ANC building will be closed on Saturday, Oct. 21.

Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center seeks vendors, volunteers for Autumn Festival

Fall is here, and the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center invites you to its annual Autumn Festival. 

Attractions include horse-drawn wagon rides, pumpkin painting, crafts, face-painting, raffles, a haunted trail walk, creepy crawlies with James Tully, animal shows, and much more! 

Save your pumpkin-spicey appetites for the yummy offerings, including Calandrelli’s Kettle Corn, Mister Softee, Valley Jim's Soft Serve, donuts and cider from Silverman's Farm, SWAT, Tex Mex Fusion, Szabo's Seafood, and more!


Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 15 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and be sure to come by to enjoy the autumn goodness we have to offer! We will have horse-drawn wagon rides, will be streaming your favorite Halloween music, and we will have lots of nature craft vendors for your fall and holiday shopping!


All proceeds benefit the Nature Center. RAIN or SHINE. NO park admission fee. Sponsored in part by the Friends of the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center and the City of Ansonia.

Beacon Falls Public Library to host annual pumpkin painting party


BEACON FALLS - Beacon Falls Public Library, 10 Maple Ave. will host its annual pumpkin painting party at 9 a.m. Oct. 19 with the Friends of Beacon Falls Library.
A $1/donation will go to the Friends of Beacon Falls Library. This event is ideal for younger children, Pre-K and up.
Registration is required by 10/9 so we can make sure we have enough pumpkins on hand!

Make wreaths, learn about squirrels, more at Ansonia Nature Center



ANSONIA - The Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center, 10 Deerfield Road, will offer a variety of fun and educational activities in October.

BITTERSWEET WREATHS – Oct. 5, 2 p.m.
Bring your own clippers and gardening gloves for this workshop led by Ranger Dawn.
When you collect these beautiful orange-berried vines, you’re actually helping the park by removing this invasive plant species. FEE: $6. Please call to register.

NATURE AS MENTOR – Oct. 13, 2 p.m.
Join Marlow Shami, a nature-based teacher, artist, healer, and writer, who will conduct the Nature As Mentor program for adults. Learn the magnificent language of nature in this powerful workshop. Discover your unique niche as part of our planet’s restoration plan. 
The wisdom of elder/earth-based cultures, as well as recent empirical research in the fields of eco-psychology and environmental psychology, mindfulness-based stress reduction, meditation, and energy medicine, provide the foundation of this 90-minute program. Attendees acquire simple tools to access the guidance they seek and restoration needed for negotiating the challenges of daily life. Discover how to actively engage in caring for our shared home. Adults only. Please call to register. FEE: $20 per person.

AUTUMN FESTIVAL – Oct. 19, 11 a.m.–3 p.m.
Celebrate this wonderful season with the staff and the Friends of the Ansonia Nature Center (FANCI)!
Take a ride through our community gardens and fields in our horse-drawn story wagon, where you’ll hear some spooky Halloween tales! Learn about bats, spiders, and owls! Have some fresh apple cider and baked goods. Visit the Nature Shop to buy some creepy and crawly nature-related items. Enjoy nature-related exhibitors and vendors. You can try your hand at pumpkin painting, get your face painted, and make some original crafts. All proceeds will benefit the Nature Center’s exhibits.

SELF DEFENSE WORKSHOP FOR WOMEN – Oct. 23, 6:30–7:30 p.m.
Learn life-saving techniques and how to take control of a potentially dangerous situation using practical, effective tactics. Today, self-defense is more important than ever. Refuse to be a victim!
This workshop at the Nature Center is a must for women of all ages, so sign up today! Presented by the Assembly of the Martial Arts Academy. FEE: $20 (cash or check payable to AMAA, due by Oct. 21).

NATURE EXPLORERS – Wednesdays, Oct. 23, 30, Nov. 6, 13, 10–11:30 a.m.
Join us for this 4 week pre-school/toddler program for children ages 2-5 with their adult explorer. Participants will have fun exploring nature every week in these outdoor classes, which are loosely structured, influenced by the seasons and the interests of the children. We will go outside to explore nature every class so please dress for the weather. Classes will end with a light snack and conversation. TUITION: $40 for all 4 weeks, Class is limited to 10 children. NUTS AND NESTS – Oct. 26, 2 p.m.

Nuts to you! Gone to seed, everything is squirrel feed! Explore the Nature Center’s Woodland Trail with Ranger Amie to observe our local squirrels building nests and hoarding nuts and seeds for the winter. Collect wild food for them and make a squirrel feeder to take home. For ages 6 and up. FREE. Please call to register.
NOVEMBER

A PASSION FOR BIRDS WITH HENRY LAPPEN – Nov. 2, 2 p.m.
This unique interpretive program for families helps people understand and connect with birds and other wildlife. Using masks, comedy, and loads of audience participation, artist Henry Lappen explores how and why birds have adapted to their environment. He explains the science while demonstrating how the birds move and act. Participants get to try on the masks and soar as eagles, stalk as herons, and swim as puffins. FEE: $6 per person; please call to register. For all ages.

FALL FOLIAGE HIKE – Nov. 3, 1 p.m.
Join the Nature Center naturalist for a stroll through our woodlands, old fields, and wetlands. 
Enjoy the beauty and the crisp fall air while learning about New England’s flora and fauna. Wear appropriate shoes for this moderate hike. FREE. Please pre-register.

Come to meet our furry, scaly, and feathery animal ambassadors. You’ll have the chance to touch and hold them in this FREE family program for all ages.

Join a Nature Center guide for fun, exercise, and learning about our trails! See the above listings for hikes with a specific theme.

Fiber Arts Group – Tuesdays, 6 p.m.
Get together with others to work on your fiber arts projects! Bring any kind of fiber work - knitting, felting, crocheting, etc. A great way to dedicate time to your handiwork and socialize too. FREE.

Paint a pumpkin Saturday at Gazy Brothers Farm in Oxford

"Since we had so much fun at the fall fest [Sunday], and didn't get a chance to break out the painting table, we decided to get out the paints and have fun with what's left. 
"Space is limited, so please RSVP with how many pumpkins will be needed. 

"Small pumpkins are $3, Medium pumpkins are $5, Large or fancy are $10. We will be setting up in the greenhouse to stay warm and dry!"

Friends of the Beacon Falls Library to host pumpkin painting fun

Friends of the Beacon Falls Library
Annual Pumpkin Painting Event
Drop-in between 10 a.m. and noon Oct. 27
Children who have pre-registered and paid the $1 registration fee by Oct. 25 will have a reserved pumpkin. 
There may be a limited number of other pumpkins available, but that is not guaranteed.
All materials including pumpkins are provided.

NOTE: DUE TO THE $1 FEE, PARTICIPANTS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO REGISTER ONLINE - REGISTRATION MUST BE DONE AT THE LIBRARY. 
You can call the library and then drop off the $1 fee in an envelope in the drop box if you cannot come in during library hours.

Create wreaths, repurpose candles, more at Ansonia Nature Center

ANSONIA - The Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center has scheduled fun activities for October, including its annual Autumn Festival.

FAERIE HOUSES AND TEA PARTY - Oct. 6, 1-3 p.m. Join us at Pavilion 2 to build faerie houses out of natural materials, which we will provide, and enjoy a tea party with mini-cupcakes and herbal tea. Donations of baked goods to share are also cheerfully accepted. 
FEE: $7 per person. For children 18 months to 5 years old; each child must be accompanied by an adult. Bring blankets or mats to sit on and dress appropriately for the weather.

REPURPOSE OLD CANDLES – Oct. 28, 2:30 p.m. 
Wondering what to do with all of your old, burnt out candles? Bring them to this class! Ranger Jess will show you how to melt down wax from your old candles and make brand new candles out of them. Bring an old glass jar with you to hold your new candle. 

For adults and children 11 and up. Please pre-register; class size is limited. MATERIALS FEE: $6 per person.

Moving with Hope in Shelton to hold Halloween 5K & Walk

OCTOBER 14TH 2018

Halloween Costumes Encouraged!

All participants are encouraged to run or walk in costume. Awards are given to best individual and group costumes
This is a timed race.

Awards: Top three Men & Women 5K race finishers

Post-Race party!

Family-friendly activities include Music, food, pumpkin painting, face painting, and trick or treating!

REGISTRATION: Registration ends October 14, 2018, at 9:00 am EDT



Participants 70+ in the 5K or Walk and Shelton residents in the Kid’s Fun Run only pay $10! Same Day Registration is $30 for the 5K and $15 (cash or check) for the Fun run/walk and $33 and $16.50 respectively if you use a Credit Card to register. Please, only register for one category.

Race features: 5K, 1-mile fitness walk, noncompetitive Kids 1/2 Mile "Plus" Fun Run. Trick or Treating along the Kids 1/2 Mile "Plus" Fun Run!
Course: 5K run is a flat out and back course with few turns and 1 aid station on the route. This is a measured course.

We provide financial assistance to all families in need of long-term recovery that have limited resources. Our mission is to enable the brain and spinal cord injury community and those with other early-onset long-term illnesses an affordable recovery solution.
