Salvation Army in Ansonia slates summer of stories and snacks

Join The Salvation Army for a week of FREE books, stories, snacks, and summer reading support for children in Ansonia!
This year, we’re bringing the fun to a different ward of Ansonia each day, making it easier for families across the city to participate.

Land Stewards to cut invasive plant at Ansonia Nature Center


Stewardship Series 1: Nix the Knotweed  – July 6, 10 a.m.
Join the Ansonia Nature Center’s Land Stewards Team and help us in our 3-year effort to restore the park’s land.
Japanese Knotweed is an invasive plant and a threat to our Nature Center habitats and waterways. We will gather as a team to do a carbohydrate starvation cut to select sensitive knotweed-infested areas.
Please bring loppers or a harvesting knife. Afterward, we will have pizza and s’mores in Pavilion #2.
For ages 12 and up (accompanied by an adult).

Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center hike to feature search for owls


Owl Prowl: Raptor Woods Hike 
ANSONIA - Visitors to the Ansonia Nature Center at 5 p.m. March 22 will take a guided hike through the Raptor Woods and explore how our senses change with the setting of the sun. 
Guests will learn how nocturnal animals have
adapted to the nightlife and will join us in the search for the owl species that call Connecticut home. 
The program will end in the visitor center, meeting one of our resident owls! 
This FREE program is for ages 12 to adult.

Ansonia Nature Center to offer snowflake craft fun for kids



ANSONIA - Join us inside the Nature Center Visitor Center at 1 p.m. Jan.15 during a cold winter afternoon to create art. 

Together, we will craft unique snowflakes you can take home and hang up as festive decorations. The program is for ages 5 and over, with at least one accompanying adult.

Ansonia Nature Center to present winter break creature feature


ANSONIA - Visit the Ansonia Nature Center during the winter break to meet our animals. 
This live animal program at noon Dec. 27 includes information about adaptations and the natural history of each species. 

Get a chance to touch a snake or even a hissing cockroach.

Full moon hike slated Sunday at Ansonia Nature Center


This full moon is often called the Beaver Moon, Freezing Over Moon, Whitefish Moon, or Leaf Fall Moon. 

It is a time of year when the weather turns cold and frost arrives, and preparing for winter is paramount for people and animals alike. 

Join the Nature Center guides as we lead you around our park by the light of the moon. 

For all ages (children must be accompanied by an adult). Please wear layers and comfortable walking shoes for uneven terrain.

Ansonia Nature Center to host 'Leaf Man' family program Sunday


Sunday, Nov. 19, 1 p.m.

ANSONIA - Join Ranger Jeremy at the Ansonia Nature Center for a reading of the eye-catching children’s book “Leaf Man” by Lois Ehlert. 

Afterward, we will go on a short Sunday hike to collect some fall leaves, acorns, and other items along the path to make our own “Leaf Man” (and Leaf Animals too)!

Learn survival skills, primitive technology at Ansonia Nature Center


ANSONIA  - Have you ever wanted to learn what it takes to survive in the wild? 

Join us at 1 p.m. Nov. 10 at the Ansonia Nature Center for an afternoon where you will learn about all the necessities for survival. 

After learning a bit about how to survive we will head into the woods and put that knowledge to the test by building a shelter suitable for a survival situation.

Ansonia Nature Center seeks help in preserving natural habitats


Sunday, Nov. 5, 9:30-11:30 a.m.

ANSONIA - With the skyrocketing spread of invasive vegetation, the Ansonia Nature Center’s creatures need your help preserving the natural habitats. 

Join us for this workgroup that is aimed at cutting back invasive plants. 

Afterward, we will have a light lunch at the pavilion to brainstorm our next efforts. 

Register online. Ages 14 and up. Participants must wear appropriate clothing and footwear. We will be working on uneven ground as well as off-trail.

Save the date: View Geminids meteor shower at Ansonia Nature Center


ANSONIA - Celebrate one of the last meteor showers of 2023 on Dec. 14 with Ranger Jeremy at the Ansonia Nature Center! 

The Geminids will fill the sky with 120 meteors per hour at its peak between 9 and 10 p.m. 

Bring appropriate clothes for the weather, chairs, and blankets for a relaxing view.
