A Summer of Stories & Snacks is Here!

Join The Salvation Army for a week of FREE books, stories, snacks, and summer reading support for children in Ansonia!

This year, we’re bringing the fun to a different ward of Ansonia each day, making it easier for families across the city to participate.

Children are welcome to join us every day to:

Derby Neck Library to hold Littles Story Time Monday

DERBY - Every other Monday at 10:30 a.m., little ones are invited to join Miss Krissy and Miss Sarah at Derby Neck Library for some fun and games aimed at early literacy, language development, and socialization!

Derby Public Library to celebrate Read Across America Day

DERBY - Families with kids up to age 12 are welcome to visit Derby Public Library throughout the day with ongoing literacy-themed activities including a scavenger hunt and art/craft projects at the DIY Station.  

No registration needed for this portion of the celebration.

The day will also feature “Sing Me a Story” presented by Nancy Hershatter at 10:30 a.m. geared for kids ages 1-6 (siblings welcomed). 

Instrument play, creative movement, puppetry, and parachute fun are all part of this 45-minute, highly interactive program.

REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED; PLEASE BE SURE TO REGISTER EACH CHILD SEPARATELY.   

ALSO, PARENTS/CAREGIVERS DO NOT NEED TO  BE REGISTERED, ONLY THEIR CHILDREN.

Read Across America is an annual event celebrated on or near March 2, the birthday of children's author Dr. Seuss. 

It is a nationwide reading celebration that was created by the National Education Association in 1997 to promote literacy and encourage a love of reading among children.

Ansonia Library event to feature violinist, tale from China

ANSONIA - Please join us at 11 a.m. Dec. 11 at the Ansonia Library in welcoming The New Haven Symphony Orchestra's own Anna Leunis as she bridges music, culture, and literacy into an 

event for all ages!

We will hear the story of Lon Po Po, a Little Red Riding Hood tale from China, while Anna Leunis colors the story with her violin playing throughout.

Derby Neck Library to host Laptime on Zoom in April, May

 

DERBY - Miss Sarah at Derby Neck Library is hosting Laptime on Zoom at 10:15 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in April and May.

The first session is at 10:15 a.m. April 6.

Caregivers and their babies can tune into songs, rhymes, and a story time reading to introduce little ones to early literacy and language development. 

This will be a drop-in/drop-out program as needed to keep everyone happy and engaged!

Kids can register to read to Ollie at Derby Public Library

DERBY - Children ages 4-11 will get an opportunity to read to Ollie at 1 p.m. Aug. 20 at Derby Public Library. 
They are welcome to be part of the popular B.A.R.K. (Be A Reading Kid) program at the Library, 313 Elizabeth St.

It's a great opportunity for beginner or reluctant readers - as well as experienced readers - to build confidence, enhance literacy skills, and develop a love of reading.
Children will be given a 10-minute time slot to read and may select a book from Ollie’s Book Picks to share with him for the program.

Echo Hose collecting books for Vicki Soto Memorial Fund, Shelton schools

SHELTON - Before the new school year begins, Echo Hose Hook & Ladder Company 1 and Auxiliary would like to help The Vicki Soto Memorial Fund, Inc. and the Shelton school district fill their classroom libraries!

The fire company will hold its annual book drive from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 1 at its headquarters, 379 Coram Ave.

Seeking donations of new or lightly used books for students in Kindergarten and Grades 1-12. 

The effort will benefit the “Miss Soto’s Literacy Legacy Program.”

Ansonia students to leap into icy water to benefit Literacy Volunteers

ANSONIA - Ansonia High School's National Honor Society will be joining the many other brave, warm-hearted souls who will “take the leap” March 17 for Literacy Volunteers of Southern Connecticut.

“Leapers” from around the area will collect donations from family members, co-workers and friends, and run, jump, or dive into the icy cold waters at Walnut Beach in Milford.

Please support the NHS members who are willing to run into frigid waters to support the literacy efforts in our community.
