'Turnback Tuesday' highlights history of wild turkeys

Turnback Tuesday explores the history of the wild turkey.

Turkeys played a huge role with Native American tribes in the east for their meat and eggs as well as feathers for headgear.

Turkey was abundant in CT when the settlers arrived. With hunting and forest clearing, turkeys were eliminated by the early 1800s. Between 1975 and 1992, wild turkeys were reintroduced with great success in CT. They can be seen in all 169 CT towns.

Tidbit: Benjamin Franklin wanted the American turkey as the National Bird. He said the turkey is much more respectable.

Thanks goes to the Derby Public Library staff for sharing interesting local history each week.

Griffin Health Valley Soul holiday concert to return Dec. 12

DERBY - After a three-year absence due to COVID-19, Griffin Health is bringing back the Valley Soul community choir for a hand-clapping, foot-stomping, this-couldn’t-possibly-be-Naugatuck-Valley concert of traditional and contemporary gospel and holiday music Dec. 12 at Church of the Good Shepherd, 135 Mountain Road, Seymour.

Valley Soul, a choir of volunteer singers under the direction of recording artist and music industry veteran Angela Clemmons, will be the main attraction for the Griffin Health Annual Holiday Concert.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and the concert starts at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments to follow.

This can’t-miss gospel performance will feature choir members from faith-based organizations, health and human service agencies, foundations, and other grassroots organizations, serving as a metaphor for the “choir of caring” that collectively wraps its arms around the residents of the Valley.

This event is sponsored by the President’s Fund at Griffin Hospital as a thank you to Griffin’s sponsors and the community, and as a celebration of Griffin’s family of employees, medical staff, volunteers, corporators, and trustees for their dedication, compassion, and expertise.

The event is free and open to all. No reservations needed. Seating is general admission on a first come, first served basis.
