Shelton Youth Football donates to The Valley Goes Pink

DERBY - Shelton Youth Football recently donated $1,300 to the Valley Goes Pink Campaign.

Players, cheerleaders, coaches and parents raised the funds by holding a Pink Day in October which featured sales of baked goods, league apparel and footballs.

The Valley Goes Pink is a grassroots, community-wide effort in the Lower Naugatuck Valley to increase awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early detection, support The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital in Derby, and to celebrate the charitable spirit of the region’s businesses and organizations. 

Groups throughout the Valley hosted events throughout October to raise money for breast cancer screening services at The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness.

American Legion Post 16 in Shelton plans ceremonies

SHELTON - American Legion Post 16’s annual Veterans Day observance will be held Wednesday. 

Ceremonies will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Veterans’ Memorial on the Shelton Riverwalk. 

The unit will then proceed to Post 16 on Bridgeport Avenue for 11:30 a.m. services and luncheon.

After the luncheon, members of Post 16 will visit Shelton Intermediate School.

Commission to dedicate sculpture at Veterans Park in Seymour

SEYMOUR - The Seymour Culture and Arts Commission will hold a dedication ceremony of a sculpture at 6 p.m. Saturday at Veteran's Park on Broad Street. 

The recently commissioned sculpture, depicting the history of Seymour, will be presented to the Town by the Culture and Arts Commission. 

The public is invited to attend. 

Light refreshments will be available after the dedication.

Derby to hold Veterans Day ceremony

DERBY - The John H. Collins Post 24 of the American Legion in cooperation with all Derby veterans' organizations and Mayor Anita Dugatto will hold a Veterans Day ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The annual event will be held on the Derby Green.

Dugatto will sponsora reception for all veterans in attendance immediately following the ceremony at the Veterans Memorial at the corner of Atwater and Seymour Avenues.  

The River House Café in Derby will prepare the food for the reception.

Event raises $5K for Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital in Derby

DERBY - The 11^th Annual Horizon of Hope event raised $5,000 for breast cancer screening services at The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital in Derby.

Horizon of Hope is a national campaign by Longaberger Baskets to raise funds for the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer research, and local breast cancer services.

For the past 11 years, Longaberger Independent Consultant Maria Ammar of Woodbridge, has organized a luncheon fundraiser as part of the campaign. 

The donation will be used to help local women pay for breast cancer screening services and to purchase a lymphedema sleeve for a woman in need.

Next year’s Horizon of Hope event is scheduled for Sept. 11.
