'Turnback Tuesday' features Memorial Day remembrance

 Turnback Tuesday remembers those who served this country in good and prosperous times as well as the dark and scary times. Men and women from all corners, backgrounds, and ages of this country joined each other to protect us all and continue to do so.

Memorial Day or Decoration Day was originally designated on May 30,1868 with the first celebration taking place at Arlington Cemetery. In 1971, federal law changed the holiday to be the last Monday in May.

Derby Public Library wants to thank each and every one of our brave and selfless citizens who served. Thank You.

SEYMOUR - Seymour Public Library will be closed Tuesday, May 26 in observance of Memorial Day. 

The library observes all Monday holidays on Tuesdays as it is always closed on Mondays.

Hey Community!

Here’s the situation:

Over the past week, we’ve been inundated with requests for Easter Meals.

We hadn’t planned on doing meals for Easter because we’re already operating beyond our capacity on a daily basis. It’s been a challenge to keep our shelves stocked for regular shopping, let alone adding anything else. Holiday meal giveaways are a HUGE undertaking that require A LOT of manpower, coordination, and funding.

And yet,

We’ve never been able to look a need in the face and not at least TRY to meet it. We understand we’re not going to be able to help everyone. However, we ARE going to do what we can.

This isn’t going to look like a typical giveaway. We’re not even sure WHAT it’s going to look like. However we know that with YOUR support, we can create holiday magic for at least some our neighbors.

Huge thanks to the Arnold family for giving us a head-start with 50 meal bags. We also have approximately 50 frozen turkeys. We are working on hunting down hams.

If you feel called to be a part of this COMMUNITY effort, we will gladly accept hams, turkeys, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and monetary donations.

Shelton Library System announces holiday schedule

SHELTON - The Plumb Memorial and Huntington Branch Libraries will be closed on April 3 for Good Friday.

Plumb Memorial Library will be open Thursday (4/2) from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. and the Huntington Branch will be open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

On Saturday (4/4), the Plumb will be open from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and the Branch will be open from 10 a.m.-3 pm.

When we are closed, online services such as databases, downloadable ebooks (such as Libby and the Palace Project), and streaming movies (Hoopla) are available 24/7 free with a Shelton Library card: https://sheltonlibrarysystem.org/services/#online-services

'Turnback Tuesday' highlights holiday traditions

Turnback Tuesday checks out two Holiday Traditions: The “Yule or Yule Log,” originally a Nordic tradition, started with the gathering of an entire tree to burn in the fire. 

One end was placed in the fireplace and the rest in the room. The Log would be slowly fed into the fire for the 12 days of Christmas.

Next is the poinsettia plant, native to Central America/Mexico. Joel Roberts Poinsett was the 1st ambassador for the US to Mexico in 1825. He was introduced to the native flower and became interested. He sent the plant home to South Carolina, grew them and gave them as gifts to friends. Thus, the poinsettia tradition began.

DERBY - The Derby 350th holiday ornament, along with other items, are available for purchase at the Town Clerk's Office during regular business hours.

We have commemorative bells, coins, ornaments, magnets, patches, sweatshirt hoodies, and t-shirts. They make a great holiday gift and are reasonably priced.
