American Legion Post 50 in Ansonia to host Independence Day celebration

ANSONIA - The Gordon-Viselli American Legion Post 50 of Ansonia will once again host the Legion Liftoff to celebrate Independence Day.

Approximately 50 model rockets will be launched from 10-11:30 a.m. July 4 at Nelligan Park on Doyle Drive.
Members of Scout Troop 7 will partner with the Legion as they did last summer.
This is a free, family fun event. Commander Mike Heise invites you to bring blankets and lawn chairs (there is some limited bleacher seating also) to enjoy some music and take in the excitement during this holiday celebration.

Kids will be invited to retrieve rockets as they parachute down and there will be other interactive opportunities that will add to the fun.
Free freeze pops will be on hand to ward off the heat. A great way to start the Independence Day weekend. Don’t miss out on the fun!
For further information, contact Post Adjutant Pat Henri at 203-954‑7661; text or leave a voice message.

'Turnback Tuesday' celebrates Independence Day, showcases famous artist

Turnback Tuesday celebrates our country's independence.

This postcard is a copy of the famous painting done by American artist John Trumbull.

A smaller version (20” x 31”) was done circa 1786 depicting the presentation of the draft of the Declaration of Independence.

This painting is at the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven. In 1817, Trumbull was commissioned to paint a total of four large paintings. This 12’ x 18’ painting was presented to the public on October 5, 1818 along with the other three.

The painting shows 42 of the 56 signers with many of the figures being painted from life.

In 1826, the painting with the three other works of John Trumbull were placed in the rotunda of the Capitol building in Washington, D.C. where they can still be admired today.

Thanks goes to the Derby Public Library staff for sharing interesting history each week.
