Program to highlight historic Long Hill Burying Ground in Shelton

Contributed photo
SHELTON - Long Hill Burying Ground is the oldest cemetery in the city.
Tucked away on lower Long Hill Avenue near the intersection of Constitution Boulevard, it will be the location of If These Stones Could Talk, a program jointly presented by the Shelton Historical
Society and Long Hill Burying Ground Association at 1 p.m. Oct. 28.

A $5 admission for adults will benefit both organizations; students are welcome at no cost.
Presenter Marty Coughlin has done an extensive amount of research so we may better understand the background of those who once lived in the region.
A Revolutionary War private from a family with divided loyalties; an ambassador to Belgium; and members of Shelton’s founding families are a few of the individuals whose lives will be discussed.
Find out why early settler Daniel Shelton was thrown in jail.
Because this is a walking tour through the
cemetery, appropriate clothing for weather conditions and sturdy shoes are recommended.

Parking along the street is limited.
In case of rain, the event will take place at 1 p.m. Oct. 29.

For information, call 203-925-1803, see Shelton History Center’s Facebook page where there will be a notice in case of rain, or visit www.sheltonhistoricalsociety.org.

'Turnback Tuesday' features downtown Derby cottages

This week's "Turnback Tuesday" features a photo of Rufus W. Blake's cottages in Derby.

R.W. Blake was born on May 3, 1841 in Massachusetts. He had a myriad of jobs until he took over as manager of the Sterling Piano Co. in 1873.
After Charles Sterling's death in 1887, Blake then became president of the company. Between 1873 and 1887, Blake had three cottages built on Cottage Street right beside Sterling's home in Derby (as shown.)
The buildings still stand, having been converted to apartments in the 1900s.

Recuperation journey: Fall foliage, where art thou?

I realize the trees started to change colors in the past few days but I'm impatient!
I just want to take photos on a beautiful autumn day.
Is that too much to ask of Mother Nature?

Here are some of my favorites from past autumnal photo hunts in the Valley:
