Griffin Health in Oxford offers cardiopulmonary wellness cooking demonstrations
OXFORD - The Griffin Center for Healthy Living at Quarry Walk is hosting a series of free cooking demonstrations throughout July and August to help individuals strengthen the heart and lung connection.
Held July 14, 28, and every Tuesday in August from 5-6:15 p.m. at the Center’s Teaching Kitchen, these cooking classes will explore the powerful connection between nutrition, breath, and cardiopulmonary wellness by highlighting hydrating summer produce, nitrate-rich vegetables, lean proteins, omega-3-rich foods, fiber-forward legumes, and flavor-building aromatics like garlic.
Participants will learn how specific foods and cooking techniques can help reduce systemic inflammation, support healthy blood pressure and circulation, and promote a calmer, more relaxed approach to eating and living.
Summer Hydration, which discusses the importance of hydration for healthy blood volume, circulation, and easier breathing in summer heat, and features a demonstration of Herb Grilled Flank Steak with Watermelon & Feta Salad, will be July 14.
Omega-3s for Heart & Lung Function, which discusses omega-3 fatty acids and their role in reducing inflammation in blood vessels and airways, and features a demonstration of Garlic Crusted Salmon with Broccoli, Apple & Walnut Salad, will be July 28.
Nitrate-Rich Foods, which discusses dietary nitrates in beets and their role in widening blood vessels and improving oxygen delivery, and features a demonstration of Herb Chicken Breast and Roasted Beet & Quinoa Salad, will be Aug. 4.
Cruciferous & Aromatic Vegetables for Airway Health, which discusses the protective compounds for lung tissue found in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, and features a demonstration of Thai Basil Vegetable Stir-Fry and Blackened Shrimp, will be Aug. 11.
Legumes & Fiber, which discusses how fiber-rich legumes support healthy cholesterol and blood pressure, and features a demonstration of Black Bean Soup, will be Aug. 18.
Antioxidants & Mindful Eating, which discusses several foods that help improve heart and lung heath and the role of relaxed, unhurried eating in supporting digestion and the nervous system, and features Spring Vegetable Frittata and Vanilla Bean Chia Pudding Parfait, will be Aug. 25.
These events are free, but seating is limited and reservations are required.

Healthy U at Griffin Hospital in Derby to discuss mental wellness, self-care
DERBY - The Healthy U Lecture Series at the Community Health Resource Center at Griffin Hospital will provide an in-depth discussion about mental wellness and well-being Wednesday, July 15 at 6 p.m.
Led by Griffin Health physicians and experts in behavioral health, this free program features trusted medical insight into emotional, psychological, and social well-being, and how to best cope with the stresses of life.
Attendees will also learn about Griffin Health resources available to help promote an improved wellness and sample healthy food. There will be ample time for participants to ask the medical experts questions.
The Healthy U Lecture Series offers physician-led presentations and discussions to help individuals better understand how the human body functions and be empowered to manage their health and well-being. Griffin Health medical experts will provide in-depth information about the body’s systems to best explain health topics including diabetes prevention, cancer awareness, mental wellness, heart health, nutrition, and exercise for individuals who want to learn more about wellness and disease prevention.
Healthy U is held on the third Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the Community Health Resource Center.

Griffin Hospital in Derby offers free menopause wellness workshop
DERBY - The Griffin Center for Healthy Living will host a new, free health education program to help women care for their well-being throughout menopause.
Women's Health and Menopause is a three-week workshop that helps support metabolic health, manage body composition, and nourish the female body through the menopause journey and beyond.
This workshop will explain how metabolic changes for women in midlife affect muscle, fat mass, metabolism, and increase risk for osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, weight gain, and diabetes.
Certified Diabetes Care & Education Specialist Carolyn Gundell, MS, CDCES, will share tips, credible resources regarding long-term, post-menopause health risks, and lifestyle habits every woman in menopause should consider to support healthy weight loss, muscle mass and strength, nutritional status, and metabolic balance.
There will be a session on Tuesdays, July 21 and 28, and Aug. 4 from 4-5:30 p.m. at Griffin Hospital.

Living Healthy with Diabetes is a free, three-week diabetes self-management program that engages participants in learning and discussing clinical and lifestyle self-management behaviors to improve their health, blood sugars, emotional wellness, and quality of life. The program integrates trusted information from the National Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes and The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Curriculum to empower individuals diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes to manage their health and well-being.
There will be a session on Thursdays July 9, 16, and 23 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital, 350 Seymour Ave.
At weekly meetings, Certified Diabetes Care & Education Specialist Carolyn Gundell, MS, CDCES, will guide participants to manage their well-being with insightful education on healthy eating, weight management, physical activity, medication, glucose technology, health-related risk management, and coping with a chronic condition.

DERBY - The Healthy U Lecture Series at the Community Health Resource Center at Griffin Hospital will provide an in-depth discussion about the body’s digestive system and ways to care for it with Gastroenterology & Digestive Health March 18 at 6 p.m.
Led by Griffin Health physicians and experts in gastroenterology and surgery, this free program will feature trusted medical insight into digestive health, including common conditions of the upper and lower tract, colorectal cancer, reflux, ulcers, Crohn’s Disease/IBF, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Celiac Disease, treatment options, and what individuals can do and the Griffin Health resources available to help promote a healthy digestive system.
There will be healthy food to sample and try at home and ample time for participants to ask the medical experts questions.

Griffin Center for Healthy Living in Derby to host diabetes prevention program
DERBY - The Griffin Center for Healthy Living will host a session of its free diabetes prevention program this March to help empower individuals to lower their risk for the chronic health condition.
Living Healthy to Prevent Diabetes is a free, six-week program that helps individuals develop a structured lifestyle change program that can cut the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58%, and, with sustained behavior, continues to lower risk for years to follow.
This program incorporates key components of the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention’s Prevent T2 Lifestyle Change curriculum with a focus on promoting healthy eating and physical activity for individuals diagnosed with prediabetes.
There will be a session on Wednesdays March 4, 11, 18, and 25, and April 1 and 8 from 1:30-3 p.m. at Griffin Hospital, 130 Division St.

Shannon has been practicing yoga for over five years. Since working at a yoga studio and wellness center in 2021, she knew she wanted to help others physically, mentally, and spiritually.
Shannon is Yoga Nidra and Reiki I certified, and is currently pursuing her Yin Yoga and Reiki II certifications.
Her future prospects include opening a wellness practice of her own. In her free time, Shannon enjoys reading, writing, painting, and being in nature as much as possible.
