Griffin Hospital in Derby to offer free heart health workshops

DERBY - The Griffin Center for Healthy Living will offer free workshops to help individuals manage heart conditions this February.

The Heart Health Workshop is a free, three-week workshop that provides health education on heart disease with an emphasis on the management of hypertension and elevated cholesterol.

There will be a workshop session on Thursdays Feb. 5, 12, and 19 from 10-11:30 a.m. and another on Thursdays Feb. 26 and March 5 and 12 from 4-5:30 p.m. at The Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital, 350 Seymour Ave.

Based on guidelines by the American Heart Association, this program educates and empowers individuals to care for their hearts through nutrition, exercise, body composition, and stress reduction education. 

Weekly speakers include a certified diabetes care and education specialist.

Griffin Health to offer free diabetes self-management program in September

The Griffin Center for Healthy Living is hosting two sessions of its free diabetes self-management program in September to help empower individuals to improve their well-being.

Living Healthy with Diabetes is a free, six-week diabetes self-management program that engages participants in learning and discussing clinical and lifestyle self-management behaviors to improve their health, blood sugars, emotional wellness, and quality of life. 

The program integrates trusted information from the National Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes and The Association of Diabetes Care & Education Curriculum to empower individuals diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes to manage their health and well-being.

There will be a session on Tuesdays Sept. 23 and 30, and Oct. 7, 14, and 28, and Nov. 4 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Griffin Health Center for Healthy Living, Quarry Rock, 300 Oxford Road, and on Thursdays Sept. 25, and Oct. 2, 9, 16, and 30, and Nov. 6 from 1:30-3 p.m. at The Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital, 350 Seymour Ave., Derby.

At weekly meetings, Community Wellness Facilitator Carolyn Gundell, MS, CDCES, will guide participants to manage their well-being with insightful education on healthy eating, weight management, physical activity, medication, glucose technology, health-related risk management, and coping with a chronic condition.

Griffin Hospital annual 5K Walk/Run fundraiser slated Sept. 20

DERBY - The Annual 5K Walk/Run to benefit the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital, 350 Seymour Ave., will celebrate its 17^th year Sept. 20.

This non-competitive, family-friendly event begins with day-of registration at 7:30 a.m., and starts at 9 a.m. 

D'Addario Automotive Group in Shelton is this year’s Presenting Sponsor.

Registration is $35 and includes a T-shirt. The registration fees will increase by $5 after Sept. 8. Pre-registration is encouraged at griffinhealth.org/5k.

Sponsorship opportunities include signage at the event, logos on the event promotional materials and T-shirts, recognition from the stage, and the opportunity to have a table to distribute products at the event.

All proceeds are dedicated to providing exceptional, personalized cancer care and to help ease the financial burden Griffin’s cancer patients face as they undergo treatment. 

The 5K draws walkers and runners from all over the Lower Naugatuck Valley, including participants from Derby, Ansonia, Shelton, Seymour, Oxford, Naugatuck, and all over the state. 

The 5k Walk/Run was started by the caregivers of the Cancer Center as a way to raise funds to purchase wigs for patients. 

The first Walk/Run exceeded expectations drawing over 250 participants and raising more than $25,000, providing opportunity for additional financial support for patients as they undergo cancer treatment. The 5K has drawn thousands of participants over the years and raised more than $890,000 to help support local cancer survivors in its 16-year history.

Participants can walk or run individually, form a team with their family, friends and co-workers, and collect pledges and payments. 

Awards will be presented to the top fundraising team and the top fundraising individual at the event. 

Participants can also purchase a commemorative sign for $100 to honor or memorialize a loved one that will be displayed at The Center for Cancer Care.

“That’s It – Learn to Quit” teaches a variety of methods to help individuals quit tobacco and nicotine over the course of six weekly meetings. There will be a session on Mondays May 5, 12, 19, and 26, and June 2 and 9 from 10-11:30 a.m. at The Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital, 350 Seymour Ave.

The program encourages participants to acknowledge and honor past successes in their goal to quit tobacco. 

The goal is to help individuals learn how to stop using tobacco and nicotine without the guilt, shame, and fear of failure by teaching several different methods of quitting and managing nicotine withdrawal. Through group discussion and interactive activities, participants learn how to develop a quit plan that addresses their personal behaviors and habits. Strategies to manage nicotine withdrawal, behaviors, triggers, and urges are discussed as well as weight control and stress management.

Griffin Health in Derby to offer high blood sugar management program

DERBY - The Griffin Center for Healthy Living will offer a session of its innovative high blood sugar management program this month.

Healthy for Life with Elevated Blood Sugar is a free, six-week program designed for individuals diagnosed with either pre-diabetes or diabetes to help them control their elevated blood sugar.

There will be a session held on Mondays Oct. 21 and 28, and Nov. 4, 11, 18, and 25 from 5-7 p.m. at The Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital, 350 Seymour Ave.

Participants will be empowered to manage their elevated blood sugar though education on healthy eating, weight management, physical activity, medication and glucose management technology, health related risks, coping skills, and healthy lifestyle goal setting. 

Based on the National Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes and The American Heart Association Healthy for Life, this program engages participants in learning and discussing clinical and lifestyle self-management behaviors to support optimizing their health, blood sugars, quality of life, and psychosocial factors.

Center for Cancer Care at Griffin in Derby to hold prostate cancer screenings

DERBY - In recognition of Men’s Health Month, The Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital and the Health Initiative for Men (HiM) will host free prostate cancer screenings from 3-5 p.m. Sept 19.

The screening is sponsored by HiM, which encourages men to have an annual physical and to raise awareness about men’s health issues such as prostate cancer and colorectal cancer. 

In addition to the screenings, individuals can come to the Center during the event to get information about men’s health topics, including surgical hernia treatment, bariatric surgery, low-dose lung cancer screening, genetic testing for cancer and wellness visits with a primary care physician.

Prostate cancer screenings are recommended for men at 50 years old. Men at higher risk, including African American men and men who have a first-degree relative (father or brother) diagnosed with prostate cancer before age 65, should be screened at age 45. Men at a very high risk (multiple family members diagnosed with prostate cancer before age 65 years) should be tested at age 40.

“Screening programs are an inexpensive and non-invasive way to identify men who have treatable prostate cancer before they have symptoms,” said Radiation Oncologist Dr. Sanjay Aneja. “Identifying prostate cancer early before patients have symptoms is our best chance to cure their disease. It’s unfortunate that prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death among men because we have excellent treatment options which, if initiated early enough, can provide patients with a cure.”

The screenings will take 10-15 minutes. Space for the free screenings is limited; early registration is encouraged. To register, call 203-732-1280.

About Prostate Cancer

Approximately 1 in 8 men in the U.S. will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. As with most cancers, early diagnosis is important to improve chances of cure. 

Screening, although controversial, is important because early prostate cancer usually causes no symptoms.

Griffin Hospital in Derby to host Reiki Level 1 Workshop

DERBY - Griffin Hospital will host a Reiki Level 1 Workshop June 14 from 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. at The Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital, 350 Seymour Ave.

Reiki is a complementary healing method based on ancient healing practices that involves the conscious direction of healing energy through the practitioner's hands.
When channeled properly, this energy relieves energy blockages to the body and bring balances to the energy fields thereby promoting healing on all levels.

Reiki Master Laura Howell will teach the basic concepts of Reiki, allowing ample time for hands-on practice.

The workshop cost for the public is $150, which includes completion certificate and Reiki book. Griffin Hospital employees and current volunteers can register at the rate of $25. 

Payment must be cash or check, and is due upon enrollment.

Workshop participants from the general public are required to become a Griffin Health volunteer, and are expected to give 100 hours of service prior to receiving their Reiki completion certificate.

Workshop space is limited, and preregistration is required by June 7.

The 2023 5K Walk/Run had a special tie to CED Technologies as the event’s inspirational survivor speaker, Girard Nilsen, is married to the company’s Client Service Manager Linda Nilsen. The event so inspired the Nilsens that Linda requested CED direct their annual fundraising efforts to the 5K Walk/Run.

For 15 years, the 5K Walk/Run has raised funds to provide exceptional, personalized cancer care and to help ease any financial burden Griffin’s cancer patients face as they undergo treatment.
