DERBY - Christine Halkiopoulos of Shelton, a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer at Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital, was recently honored with the National Consortium of Breast Centers inaugural Guiding Light Award.

Awarded on Dec. 9, National Oncology Navigator’s Day, the NCBC Guiding Light Award is a tribute to those who illuminate the path for patients, breaking down barriers to care and ensuring no one navigates their journey alone.

“Navigators make the cancer journey less overwhelming and more hopeful—this is 

about celebrating their extraordinary impact,” said NCBC Executive Director Kimberly Samuels.

A caregiver at Griffin for three years, Halkiopoulos was nominated by both a colleague and her supervisor to spotlight the exceptional empathy and support she gives to all of her patients.

“Christine is known for her warmth, empathy, and ability to turn even the most anxious biopsy day into one filled with ease, connection, and laughter,” said Griffin Health Diagnostic Imaging Site Manager Ashley Schneider. “Her rare clinical expertise, paired with her gift for making people feel seen and safe, makes her a standout in every sense."

Oncology navigators are essential in the cancer care continuum. Whether bridging gaps in care, connecting patients to critical resources, or providing emotional and psychosocial support, their role is vital to improving outcomes and ensuring that no one faces cancer alone. Navigators play an important role in improving access to timely, quality care, reducing healthcare disparities, promoting patient-centered outcomes, and in elevating the standard of cancer support services.

Valley Goes Pink fundraisers slated in Shelton, Derby

The Valley Goes Pink Campaign invites the Lower Naugatuck Valley and surrounding communities to enjoy a variety of events throughout September and October for a good cause.

The Valley Goes Pink is a grassroots, community-wide effort to increase awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early detection, support the Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital, and to celebrate the charitable spirit of the region’s businesses and organizations.

The following is a list of upcoming Valley Goes Pink fundraising events.

Waiters Go Pink!, Sept. 29 – The wait staff at Wellington’s Restaurant, 51 Huntington St., Shelton, and local community members will be serving up smiles and delicious food for a good cause. All tips during the evening service will be donated to the Valley Goes Pink. Reservations are required at 203-929-0336.

Trivia Night, Oct. 7 – Porky’s Café, 50 Center St., Shelton, will host a fun-filled night of trivia and prizes starting at 6 p.m. A $30 donation includes Porky's famous wings and pizza. Cash bar and raffles are available.

Art Bras for the Valley, Oct. 9 – Little Barn, 901 Bridgeport Ave., Shelton, will host a fashion show featuring unique art bras created by breast cancer survivors and their family and friends, and local businesses starting at 6 p.m. The event is $60 a ticket and includes of hors d'oeuvres (cash bar available), silent auction and raffles.

Pink Bingo, Oct. 14 – The Hops Company, 77 Sodom Lane, Derby, will host an evening of exciting bingo games, great company, and fantastic prizes starting at 6 p.m. A $30 donation includes 10 bingo sheets, dabber and two slices of Zuppardi's cheese pizza. Snacks and Zuppardi's Pizza (limited menu) will be available for purchase. There will be a cash bar and raffles.

CED Technologies donates $3,500 to 5K Walk/Run at Griffin Hospital in Derby

The 2023 5K Walk/Run had a special tie to CED Technologies as the event’s inspirational survivor speaker, Girard Nilsen, is married to the company’s Client Service Manager Linda Nilsen. The event so inspired the Nilsens that Linda requested CED direct their annual fundraising efforts to the 5K Walk/Run.

For 15 years, the 5K Walk/Run has raised funds to provide exceptional, personalized cancer care and to help ease any financial burden Griffin’s cancer patients face as they undergo treatment.

Virtual meditation event to support The Valley Goes Pink Campaign

The Valley Goes Pink Campaign will host a live virtual meditation event from 7-8 p.m. March 11.

Hosted by Mindfulness Instructor Virginia Bressano, this event will feature the use of essential oils in meditation. 

Participants will be shipped a special blend of oils specifically created for this event. If a person is unable to make the event, they can receive a recording of the program.

Laura Marasco, former owner of Exhale Studio in Shelton, is proud to sponsor this event.

SHELTON - Valley resident Vicky O’Connor was the big winner at the 2nd Annual Diamond Dig fundraiser at Marks of Design.

O’Connor found the top prize: a one-carat diamond from Antwerp, Belgium. 
More than 800 carats of precious gemstones were awarded in the event, which raised more than $11,000 for The Valley Goes Pink Campaign.

Concert, chili contest, 2nd annual Diamond Dig to benefit Valley Goes Pink

DERBY - The 9th Annual Valley Goes Pink invites the community to another exciting week of events filled with a concert, chili, and carats.

Participants may purchase a bucket like the one pictured above for $40 to participate in the fund-raising "dig" for a chance to find the diamond.

Hewitt Center at Griffin Hospital in Derby receives quality designation

DERBY - The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital has again achieved the highest level of quality breast health care recognition from the American College of Surgeons.

The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness was granted a three-year/full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. 

The Hewitt Center was also accredited by the organization in 2013.

“The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness is a comprehensive breast center, offering patients expert staff, patient-centered care, advanced technology and all the resources and services needed to quickly and effectively screen and diagnose breast disease,” said Denise Barajas, MD, medical director of The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness. 

“We are very proud to be recognized again for our commitment to providing safe, exceptional and complete care to our community.”

Accreditation by the NAPBC is only given to those centers that provide the highest level of quality breast care and that voluntarily undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. During the survey process, the center must demonstrate compliance with standards established by the NAPBC for treating women who are diagnosed with the full spectrum of breast disease. 

The standards include proficiency in the areas of: center leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education, and quality improvement.

  

A breast center that achieves NAPBC accreditation has demonstrated a firm commitment to offer its patients every significant advantage in their battle against breast disease.

The NAPBC is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to the improvement of the quality of care and monitoring of outcomes of patients with diseases of the breast.  

This mission is pursued through standard-setting, scientific validation, and patient and professional education.  

Its board membership includes professionals from 20 national organizations that reflect the full spectrum of breast care.

The American Cancer Society estimated there would be 232,340 patients diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in the United States in 2013. 

In addition, hundreds of thousands of women who will deal with benign breast disease this year will require medical evaluation for treatment options by a breast center. 

Receiving care at a NAPBC-accredited center ensures that a patient will have access to:

• Comprehensive care, including a full range of state-of-the-art services
• A multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best treatment options
• Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options
• Quality breast care close to home.

DERBY - Thanks to the overwhelming support of Valley schools, businesses, groups, and individuals, The 7th Annual Valley Goes Pink Campaign raised more than $85,000 for The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital.

The funds will be used to help enhance patient care at the Hewitt Center, including purchasing new technology for breast cancer treatment.

“We are incredibly thankful to everyone in the Valley and the surrounding communities who volunteered their time and talents to make the campaign so successful,” said Valley Goes Pink co-chair Jodi Dawley. “This is truly a grassroots effort that is making a real difference in the battle against breast cancer.”

This year’s campaign featured a variety of events including a mystery-themed event at Spector Furniture in Ansonia, bingo, an “art bra” fashion show and auction, dining, and rallies at schools throughout the Valley.

“Fighting breast cancer is a cause that is very near and dear to our hearts,” said Valley Goes Pink co-chair Sue Petrizzo. “What makes Valley Goes Pink so great is that it brings the community together for a common cause, helping spread awareness about breast cancer and the importance of early detection.”

DERBY - The 12^th Annual Hope Lives event raised $5,000 for breast cancer screening services at The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital in Derby.

Hope Lives is associated with Horizon of Hope, a national campaign by Longaberger Baskets to raise funds for the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer research and local breast cancer services.

For the past 12 years, Longaberger Independent Consultant Maria Ammar of Woodbridge has organized a luncheon fundraiser as part of the campaign. The donation will be used to help local women pay for breast cancer screening services and to purchase a lymphedema sleeve for a woman in need.

Next year’s Horizon of Hope event is already scheduled for Sept. 24, 2017.
