Griffin Health in Derby recognizes nurse with The DAISY Award

DERBY – Griffin Health recently honored Vincent Carrera, RN, of Naugatuck, with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

The award is part of the DAISY Foundation's mission to recognize the extraordinary, compassionate care nurses provide patients and families every day.

Winners can be nominated by patients, patients’ family or friends, or fellow caregivers for their exemplary care.

Carrera, a nurse for Griffin Hospital’s Critical Care Unit, was nominated by a fellow caregiver member for his exceptional, patient-centered care and support for his patients’ spirits.

“We had a patient with no family who was admitted for an extended period of time. This patient was in respiratory distress and very anxious on multiple occasions,” the nomination for Carrera stated.

“Vinny recognized the patient’s need for human interaction, and would talk to him, reassure him and ensure all his needs were always met despite his confusion. He constantly advocated for the patient and would be in the room assisting him even when he was not the nurse assigned to him for that day.

“This is just one example where Vinny has gone above and beyond for his patients. I have overheard countless interactions with the patients and their families to ensure that he is providing the best care possible while meeting the needs and wishes of the patient.”

Information about the DAISY Award is included in Griffin Health patient information packets and nomination forms are available online and at all Griffin Health locations.

The award recipients are chosen by a committee at Griffin and the award is presented throughout the year.

For more information, visit griffinhealth.org/daisy.

About The DAISY Foundation

The DAISY Foundation is a not-for-profit organization, established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, by members of his family. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.

The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.

Naugatuck man, 36, charged with child sex abuse material possession

Roger Pratt

ANSONIA - Roger Pratt, 36, of Naugatuck was a
rrested by warrant for possession of child sex abuse material first degree, Lt. Patrick Lynch said in a press release Tuesday evening.
Pratt was arraigned in Derby Superior Court and held on a court set bond of $75,000.

Police said Pratt’s arrest was the result of an investigation that began when he was accused of going online and attempting to meet an underage girl.
A group of private citizens that uses social media to identify possible child predators engaged in conversations with Pratt and then confronted him in Ansonia.
While the actions of the group to identify and expose child predators is commendable the Ansonia Police Department does not recommend private citizens confront someone they suspect, but rather reach out to the law enforcement agency where the suspect resides to report their suspicions, Lynch said.

All arrestees are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
