'Turnback Tuesday' features longtime Derby drug store

This week's "Turnback Tuesday" features The Purdy Drug Co. Established in 1894/1895 by Harrison E. Purdy, the company was first located at 68 Main St., Derby, which was where this image was taken. 
The Purdy Drug Co. then moved sometime in the 1930s and remained at 59 Fourth St. until it closed in the '60s. Harrison was the company President and Treasurer while his wife, Anna, was the Secretary.

Gentile to host small business forum in Ansonia

ANSONIA - In honor of National Small Business week, state Rep. Linda Gentile, D-Ansonia, Derby, will host a small business forum from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday at Emmett O'Brien Technical High School.

Representatives from the Department of Economic Development and the Department of Labor will speak about the various programs and resources available that support small businesses. 

“Small businesses are the backbone of our economy and we must continue to provide them with the necessary tools they need to thrive,” Gentile said. “I am excited to meet with small business owners and will continue to support them in the legislature.”

She will be joined by state Sen. George S. Logan, House Republican Leader state Rep. Themis Klarides, and state Rep. Klarides-Ditria.

The school is at 141 Prindle Ave.

Derby Public Library continues Sports Talks sessions


DERBY - The Derby Public Library is now in its 12th season of Sports Talks.  
These informal sessions are held every Thursday at 10 a.m. throughout the baseball season.  
They are facilitated by radio talk show host, author, and Major League Baseball Rules Consultant Rich Marazzi of Ansonia.  

Each session includes trivia contests, videos, lively conversation and more. All ages, from rookies through veterans, are invited to join Marazzi and his group of Silver Sluggers.  No registration is necessary.

State Sen. George S. Logan attended an informational forum last week about school-based health centers at the state capitol.  
Among attendees at the event was Griffin Hospital Social Service Coordinator Rita Crana, at right, who briefed state lawmakers on the quality services provided by Griffin Faculty Physicians at Ansonia High School’s Charger Health Center.  
The Center’s community partners include:  Lower Naugatuck Valley Parent Child Resource Center, Naugatuck Valley Health District, Valley Substance Abuse Action Council, Community Health Network, and the American Liver Foundation.  
Logan, who serves as Vice-Chair of the state legislature’s Public Health Committee, represents Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Bethany, Derby, Hamden, Naugatuck, and Woodbridge.

Going to the birds

This turkey vulture came in for a landing atop my neighbor's shed this morning. I was startled by a giant wingspan out of the corner of my eye when I was working on the computer and grabbed the camera just in time.

I didn't see any of them yet this morning, but I did see this grackle sitting alone on the wire.
