 ANSONIA - Discover local amphibians during a guided hike at  2 p.m.  March 28 at Ansonia Nature Center to our vernal pools. Help our staff lift rocks and logs to uncover these slippery creatures.

Come learn about our local amphibians during a guided hike to our vernal pools. Help Ranger Evelyn lift rocks and logs to find these slippery creatures beneath. Make sure to wear clothes that can get MUDDY.

Seymour Conservation Commission to host New Year's Day hike



Start the New Year off with a healthy dose of the outdoors! The "Lake Loop" is a half-mile trail around Fountain Lake, on the border of Seymour and Ansonia. 
Choose between one, two, or three laps. No pressure or judgement! All participants are required to sign in. Then, you may start walking/hiking at your own pace.
Open to all ages. Bring a friend! Small groups and families are welcome. Children under 18 must have a parent or guardian present. Dogs are allowed but must be on leash at all times. Pick up and dispose of all waste.
Parking is on Birmingham Boulevard. Then walk down to the fishing platform to find the sign-in table. DO NOT park on the grass along Route 334/Great Hill Road!

Oxford Land Trust to mark Founders Day Sunday at Jackson Cove Park


Please join us for Founders Day 2025 at Jackson Cove Park!

9.30 a.m. - Hike: Please arrive by 9:15 a.m. if you are planning on attending

11 a.m. - Paul Colburn's presentation: “Black Bears in Connecticut”

12 p.m. - Light lunch will be served

Please bring your children to help us decorate Fairy Houses for our planned Fairy walk that we will create at one of our properties.

When you arrive at Jackson Cove Park, please let the gate attendants know that you are there for the Oxford Land Trust event at the Pavilion and you will receive free entrance.

Enjoy moon and firefly hike July 10 at Ansonia Nature Center


ANSONIA - Follow the Ansonia Nature Center’s Rangers, Jeremy and Evelyn, through our fields and meadows in the moonlight, looking for fireflies among the leaf litter and discovering the beauty of bioluminescence around you. 

The hike steps off at 8:30 p.m. July 10. The Nature Center is at 10 Deerfield Lane.

We’ll end the hike with a show by beetles in the Lampyridae family, better known as lightning bugs and fireflies. 

Fee is $3 per person ages 4 and older. Wear shoes for hiking.

ANSONIA - Did you know our native Eastern white pine is not only one of the most magnificent trees in the forest, but also offers so much - from baskets, to survival! Its tea has more vitamin C than a glass of orange juice. 

Join Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center Ranger Dawn at 1 p.m. Sunday on a hike to see how they grow, then return for some tea and a treat made from this tall and mighty tree. 

Handouts will be given too!

Learn to make journey sticks at Ansonia Nature Center program


Journey Sticks: Sept. 14, 2 p.m.

A journey stick (also known as a story stick) is a memento from a nature walk featuring items collected while on a walk. 

The First Nations people used these Journey Sticks to track their experiences and tell the stories of their travels. Join us [at the Ansonia Nature Center] for a hike through our beautiful trail and make a journey stick when you return.

Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center to host moonlight hike


Moonlight Hike: Sunday, Aug.18, 8 p.m.

Enjoy an evening with your family during this moonlight hike, allowing us to view the Sturgeon Moon. The Native American fishing tribes are credited for naming this Moon since sturgeon, a large Great Lakes fish, was most readily caught during this month. 


Join our staff on a hike in our meadows to watch for this reddish moon. Each child must be accompanied by an adult.

Seymour Conservation Commission to host hike Saturday at Keith Mitchell Forest


Join the Seymour Conservation Commission for a guided hike along Fourmile Brook to see what remains of old mills and the dams that once powered them.
Observe the subtle changes of this secondary forest as we venture all the way up to the Oxford town line and back. Total hike will be about 2 miles.
Please meet at the designated parking lot (corner of Route 34 & Route 188), in front of the Scout Pavilion. 
This event is FREE to attend, and there is no registration. Simply show up prior to the start time.
In honor of Earth Day, all participants will receive a free packet of pollinator seeds!

Wildflower hike slated at Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center


ANSONIA - Embark on a serene two-hour hike from 1-3 p.m. May 12 for adults, teens, and patient children at the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center.

This amble through the woods offers a unique opportunity to explore the abundance of spring wildflowers at the nature center.

Stop to study each new wildflower, document findings, and even sketch as we appreciate nature’s hidden gems before the full emergence of tree leaves. This enriching experience fosters an appreciation of the little things that have a big impact.

Dress in hiking shoes and layers. Sun and insect protection is recommended. Bring observation tools, such as a camera or journal, and water.

The nature center is at 10 Deerfield Lane.

Ansonia Nature Center to host 'Leaf Man' family program Sunday


Sunday, Nov. 19, 1 p.m.

ANSONIA - Join Ranger Jeremy at the Ansonia Nature Center for a reading of the eye-catching children’s book “Leaf Man” by Lois Ehlert. 

Afterward, we will go on a short Sunday hike to collect some fall leaves, acorns, and other items along the path to make our own “Leaf Man” (and Leaf Animals too)!

Campfire dinner slated at Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center



ANSONIA - Join Ansonia Nature Center Ranger Maria at 3 p.m. Nov. 11 for a campfire dinner. 
We’ll learn how to start and tend a campfire safely. Each person will then create their own custom hobo foil dinner to cook over our fire. 

To top things off, Ranger Maria will demonstrate how to cook an apple spice cake in a Dutch oven using the coals from our fire. 
The group will meet at the Nature Center building and then hike to our designated location. 
Dress for an evening outside in November. Bring a folding chair for your comfort. 
Ages 8+
$10 per person. Check, money order, or cash in advance. 
Space is very limited.

Hunt for fireflies July 3 at Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center


ANSONIA - Follow the Nature Center’s rangers, Jeremy and Evelyn, at 8 p.m. July 3 through fields and meadows looking for glowworms in the leaf litter and discovering the beauty of bioluminescence around you.
