Singer/songwriter to perform at Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center July 31

ANSONIA - Chris Rowlands will perform at the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center, July 31 at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 per person, children 2 and under free!

Rowlands is an award-winning singer and songwriter who offers an interactive, kid-friendly presentation for those who love music and nature. He creatively blends music, comedy, and education in a fast-paced show that teaches and inspires. 

Rowlands brings animals to life through song, dance, puppets, and colorful props to teach children about animals and their habitats. 

The Environment Magazine has honored him with its first E Award for his environmental education programs. Don’t miss this musical program!

Learn about fireflies at Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center hike

 

Firefly Hike Saturday, July 18 8-9 p.m. ANSONIA - Join Ranger Jeremy for an evening walk around Redwing Pond and into the upper fields as we search for fireflies, glowworms, and other bioluminescent wonders of the summer night.  Learn about the life cycle and behavior of these fascinating insects while enjoying the beauty of the Nature Center after dark.  Wear appropriate footwear and bring a flashlight. $3 per participant ages 4 and older.

Help Nix the Knotweed July 11 at Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center

Join Ranger Maria and the Conservation Corps as we continue our long-term effort to manage invasive Japanese Knotweed on the Nature Center property using non-chemical methods. 

Volunteers will help cut and remove knotweed from sensitive habitat areas to encourage native plants to return. 

Bring a refillable water bottle, sunscreen, bug spray, and a snack.

For ages 12 and up. An adult must accompany children 16 and under.

The Nature Center is at 10 Deerfield Lane.

Learn to craft seed bombs May 2 at Ansonia Nature Center

Seed Bomb Crafting and Hike May 2 at 1:30 p.m. ANSONIA - Support habitat restoration efforts by crafting seed balls to disperse on a hike, and take an extra seed ball home for yourself! Support native plants this National Wildflower Week by helping the Nature Center disperse seed balls. Seed balls (or seed bombs) are made by combining seeds, clay, and a bit of soil into a protective ball. This program will begin with the creation of seed balls (so be prepared for muddy hands!), then a hike to disperse them in our woods to support habitat restoration efforts.  Participants will also be able to make a seed ball for themselves to take home! FREE - donations welcome! The Center is at 10 Deerfield Lane.

ANSONIA - Every day is Earth Day at the Ansonia Nature Center! 

We invite you to honor Mother Earth with our Friends of the Ansonia Nature Center co-hosting this annual event from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday. The center is at 10 Deerfield Lane.

Enjoy hikes, live animals, environmental exhibitors, a farmer’s market, music, and more! Food and snacks available from local vendors. No park admission fee. 

All ages welcome; bring family and friends to celebrate spring!

Free admission! No registration necessary.

Earth Day FAQ

Q: Is there a fee to get in?
A: No, there’s no admission fee for our Earth Day Celebration!

Q: Where do I park?
A: There are two parking lots available: our main parking lot in front of the Nature Center, and an auxiliary lot in front of the Redwing Pond House, located at 21 Milan St. Follow the directions of the parking attendants.

Q: What time does the event start?
A: The event starts at 10:00 AM and continues until 3:00 PM.

Q: Where do I go to join an scheduled event?
A: Hikes and most other scheduled events will meet at the entrance to the Nature Center. Featured Creatures with James will meet inside the Nature Center. Space is limited for our live animal show, and spots fill up fast, so come early!

Q: Will there be bathrooms available?
A: Yes, there will be outdoor portable toilets on-site as well as indoor restrooms.

Q: Will the Nature Center building be open?
A: Yes, the Nature Center will be open for Earth Day. We will be closed the day after (Sunday), and will re-open on Monday.

Q: Is there a rain date for this event?
A: No, in the event of rain there will be no event.

Q: Will there be places to sit and rest?
A: Yes, there are benches at the pavilion and bleachers next to the fields

Q: Is there handicap parking available?
A: There are handicap parking spots in our main lot, and some spots will be made available next to the field; tell the parking attendant if you require accessible parking.

Q: Can I bring my dog?
A: Dogs are not allowed at this event, with the exception of service animals.

Q: Is this event stroller-friendly?
A: You are welcome to bring a stroller, but be advised that exhibitors and vendors will be set up on the athletic field, the condition of which can vary based on recent weather.

Q: Will there be an ATM available?
A: Yes, there will be an ATM at this event.

Q: Is outside food allowed?
A: Yes, if you would like to bring a bagged lunch or snacks with you, you are welcome to do so.

Q: Can I donate items to the raffle?
A: Yes! We welcome donations, and will be accepting raffle items up until Monday the 7th. When you drop items off at the Nature Center, be sure to fill out the Donation Log sheet.

ANSONIA - Mid-spring is bursting with edible plants. 

Join Ranger Dawn at 1:30 p.m. May 16 at Ansonia Nature Center to learn the ancient skill of plant identification and ethical collection. 

The nature center is at 10 Deerfield Lane.  

After our hike, we’ll enjoy a tasty snack and tea made from nature’s wild offerings back at the Visitor Center.

Learn to identify, cut invasive plants April 4 at Ansonia Nature Center

ANSONIA - Join Ranger Maria [at the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center April 4] to learn how to identify, cut, and treat invasive plants overtaking some of the most diverse areas of our forest.

Meet at the Visitor Center at 9:30 a.m. Bring loppers, hand clippers, or pruning saws if you have them (loaners available). Wear long sleeves and pants, sturdy gloves, and bring water and a snack.

We’ll work until 11:30 a.m., followed by our signature soup-and-bread lunch.

Free — Registration Required

No experience needed—just curiosity and a willingness to help! 12 years and older welcome! Anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

ANSONIA - Learn about balms, scrubs, and salves designed for cold-weather care using soothing, environmentally friendly ingredients at 1 p.m. Jan. 31 at the Ansonia Nature Center.

Ranger Dawn will guide you through creating natural winter skin-care products using soothing, environmentally friendly ingredients. 

Each participant will take home a product that Ranger Dawn swears by for dealing with winter dry skin! MATERIALS FEE $20.

Learn how species like barberry, burning bush, and oriental bittersweet continue to spread even when the temperature drops. It's a great opportunity to see how these plants adapt and what we can do to manage them. 

All experience levels welcome! 12 years and older welcome! Children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Wolf Moon meteor-watching event slated Jan. 3 at Ansonia Nature Center

ANSONIA - Join Ranger Jeremy at 6 p.m. Jan. 3 at the Ansonia Nature Center for a special Wolf Moon meteor‐watching experience during the peak of the Quadrantids! 

Enjoy crisp winter skies as we learn about this brilliant but brief meteor shower and search for shooting stars together. 

Grab a blanket/chairs, some snacks, and your friends for a night of celestial wonder. Don't forget to make a wish on the shooting stars!

The Quadrantids get their name from Quadrans Muralis, a former constellation created in 1795 by the French astronomer Jérôme Lalande that included portions of Boötes and Draco. 

They are an annual shower that peaks typically in early January, with the peak in 2026 being on January 3rd.

Come join us at the nature center for a relaxing viewing event of the Quadrantids that will be taking place in one of our fields away from as much light pollution as possible. At its peak, this meteor shower averages about 25 meteors an hour that can be see by the naked eye.

During the event there will also be a telescope set up for people to check out the moon as well as other celestial bodies visible in the sky that night.
