Earth Day FAQ

Q: Is there a fee to get in?
A: No, there’s no admission fee for our Earth Day Celebration!

Q: Where do I park?
A: There are two parking lots available: our main parking lot in front of the Nature Center, and an auxiliary lot in front of the Redwing Pond House, located at 21 Milan St. Follow the directions of the parking attendants.

Q: What time does the event start?
A: The event starts at 10:00 AM and continues until 3:00 PM.

Q: Where do I go to join an scheduled event?
A: Hikes and most other scheduled events will meet at the entrance to the Nature Center. Featured Creatures with James will meet inside the Nature Center. Space is limited for our live animal show, and spots fill up fast, so come early!

Q: Will there be bathrooms available?
A: Yes, there will be outdoor portable toilets on-site as well as indoor restrooms.

Q: Will the Nature Center building be open?
A: Yes, the Nature Center will be open for Earth Day. We will be closed the day after (Sunday), and will re-open on Monday.

Q: Is there a rain date for this event?
A: No, in the event of rain there will be no event.

Q: Will there be places to sit and rest?
A: Yes, there are benches at the pavilion and bleachers next to the fields

Q: Is there handicap parking available?
A: There are handicap parking spots in our main lot, and some spots will be made available next to the field; tell the parking attendant if you require accessible parking.

Q: Can I bring my dog?
A: Dogs are not allowed at this event, with the exception of service animals.

Q: Is this event stroller-friendly?
A: You are welcome to bring a stroller, but be advised that exhibitors and vendors will be set up on the athletic field, the condition of which can vary based on recent weather.

Q: Will there be an ATM available?
A: Yes, there will be an ATM at this event.

Q: Is outside food allowed?
A: Yes, if you would like to bring a bagged lunch or snacks with you, you are welcome to do so.

Q: Can I donate items to the raffle?
A: Yes! We welcome donations, and will be accepting raffle items up until Monday the 7th. When you drop items off at the Nature Center, be sure to fill out the Donation Log sheet.

All ages welcome; bring family and friends to celebrate spring!

Ansonia Nature Center to host annual Earth Day event Saturday

 

Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center to hold summer nature days

Summer Nature Days: July 8-12, July 15-19, July 29-Aug. 2, Aug. 5-9

For children 6 to 11 years old who love the outdoors and wildlife, these popular classes will be educational and allow them to explore the 156 acres the park offers. 

This year, we will have two separate age groups of campers each week! One group of campers will be ages 6, 7, & 8, and the other group is ages 9, 10, & 11. During this camp, we will visit a variety of habitats in the park, such as wetlands, fields, and woodlands. Hikes, games, crafts, and cooking will be incorporated into our lessons. 

This is a great choice for a fun summer experience!

TUITION PER WEEK: $153 for priority students (Ansonia residents and current family-level FANCI members); $180 for all others.

You may register your child for only one week of camp – a waiting list for other weeks will be made available after all weeks have been filled. Register by calling 203-736-1053 or emailing ansnaturectr@ansoniact.org.

We will begin promptly at 9 a.m.

Celebrate Groundhog Day, make valentines at Ansonia Nature Center

ANSONIA - Fun and educational activities are on tap in February at the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center, 10 Deerfield Road. 

GROUNDHOG DAY CELEBRATION – Feb. 2, 3 p.m.

Come celebrate Groundhog Day this Sunday at the Ansonia Nature Center! 
Go outside and explore a groundhog’s natural habitat while you learn about this quirky American folk holiday. We will head back inside for a fun and interactive shadow puppet performance followed by a craft activity where you will be able to make your own shadow puppet to take home. Class limit 12. For all ages. MATERIALS FEE: $3.

ECO-ART VALENTINE WORKSHOP – Feb 14, 1:30 p.m.

Create gifts for your loved ones out of recycled materials – Valentine boxes, cards, paper bracelets, and some other sweet surprises.  
This will be a fun day to share with your family and friends! Call to register for this FREE program. For all ages.

WINTER WONDERLAND – Feb. 18, 1 p.m.

Chilly, snowy days are calling your kids outdoors. Come for fun winter activities on this day off from school. There’s nothing better than gliding through the cool air on your sled. We will take the whole family to our awesome hill for sledding fun, but toddlers should ride with a parent. Everyone should be well-bundled in layers to stay warm. After our adventure we will come inside for hot cocoa and a chance to meet one of the Nature Center’s animals. FREE for families of all ages. Registration required; families must bring their own sleds.

NATURE EXPLORERS  – Wednesdays, Feb. 19 and 26; March 4 and 11, 10 a.m.

Join us for this 4-week program for children ages 2–5 with their adult explorer. Participants will have fun exploring nature every week in these outdoor classes. 
The classes are loosely structured, influenced by the seasons and the interests of the children. We will go outside to explore nature every class so please dress for the weather. Classes will end with a light  snack. 
TUITION: $40 for all 4 weeks, Class is limited to 10 children ages 2–5. Please call to register.

LITTLE SCIENTISTS – Feb. 29, 1 p.m.

Join us for this exciting hands-on program by Little Scientists. Please call to register.

Station 1 (for ages 5–7): “Why Is It Cold Outside?” During this lesson your children will learn why the weather gets colder and it often snows outside. They will get an opportunity to observe what’s different outside when it’s cold!  Winter conditions are due to the part of the Earth that we live on being tilted away from the sun. The effect of less sunshine is that it’s colder. Lakes and ponds freeze over.  Short days, snow, and a change in the animals seen outdoors also mark the season. FEE: $6 per child.

Station 2 (for ages 8–11): “How Do Animals Survive the Winter?” During this lesson your children will learn what animals, as living organisms, do to survive through cold and winter conditions. They will learn about how animals adapt to frigid temperatures and are able to conserve body heat. Different types of animals adjust in different ways, using their protective coverings, such as feathers, fur, and even layers of fat, which help insulate them against the cold environment. FEE: $6 per child.

Take a hike, meet live raptors in January at Ansonia Nature Center

ANSONIA - The Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center, 10 Deerfield Road, has announced a variety of fun activities for January.

FULL MOON HIKE: Full Wolf Moon – Jan.10, 5:30 p.m.

Join Wendy and Ranger Evelyn, our Nature Center naturalists, on a hike by the light of the moon! 
Listen for coyotes howling while we gather around the fire at pavilion #1 from 5:30–6:30 p.m. to warm up before the hike begins.  We will use our night vision and other senses for this after-dark park expedition in Raptor Woods. 
Wear warm clothes and proper foot gear! Inclement weather or dangerous conditions will cancel the hike. 
FEE: $1 per person; all ages are welcome. Children must be with an adult. This hike is not stroller friendly. Call to register.

HIKE: Trees in Winter – Jan. 12, 1 p.m.

Join our Nature Center naturalist, Ranger Evelyn, for this winter hike. Come see the different ways trees have adapted to the changing seasons. Learn what to look for to identify trees without their leaves. Wear appropriate shoes for this moderate hike and dress for the weather. 
For all ages; children must be accompanied by an adult. FREE, but please register. 

INSPIRING RAPTORS: A Place Called Hope and Sophie Zyla – Jan. 18, noon

Visit the Nature Center to meet a few live raptors up close and personal and the artist who was inspired by them. 
These animal ambassadors from A Place Called Hope, as well as images of the different raptor feathers, were photographed by Sophie Zyla. 

Who hasn’t been intrigued by a found feather? Some slash through the air with a whirl while others remain silent. 
During this meet-and-greet, not only will you get to see her beautiful photographs on exhibit but also get to meet the animal ambassadors she was inspired by. Christine Cummings, founder of the raptor rehabilitation center A Place Called Hope, will bring a couple of native birds of prey from their facility for you to see up close and to learn about their impressive adaptations.

HIKE: Snowshoe Sunday – Jan. 26, 1 p.m.

Need to get out and breathe the fresh air? Enjoy the winter with this guided hike through our beautiful woodland and fields. Great exercise after the holidays. This program is geared toward adults and older children. We have a limited number of snowshoes to borrow, so please register in advance.  FREE.

A PASSION FOR BIRDS WITH HENRY LAPPEN  – Nov. 2, 2 p.m.

This unique interpretive program for families helps people understand and connect with birds and other wildlife. 
Using masks, comedy, and loads of audience participation, artist Henry Lappen explores how and why birds have adapted to their environment. 
He explains the science while demonstrating how the birds move and act. 
Participants get to try on the masks and soar as eagles, stalk as herons, and swim as puffins.

FALL FOLIAGE HIKE - Nov. 3, 1 p.m.

Join the Nature Center naturalist for a stroll through our woodlands, old fields, and wetlands. Enjoy the beauty and the crisp fall air while learning about New England’s flora and fauna. Wear appropriate shoes for this moderate hike. FREE. Please register.

Come try the fun and adventurous sport of orienteering at this event hosted by the Western CT Orienteering Club.

Courses suitable for beginners through advanced participants with free training provided. Start any time from 10 am to noon and finish by 2 pm.

Hunt for fireflies, learn to ID trees, more at Ansonia Nature Center

ANSONIA - The Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center, 10 Deerfield Road, offers a variety of fun activities in July.

CREATURES OF LONG ISLAND SOUND – July 13, noon

This is a great weekday family program to learn all about the creatures of Long Island Sound. We will explore the Nature Center’s salt water tank and learn how to identify and hold common critters you will find at New England’s local beaches this summer. FREE.

FIREFLY HUNT – July 16, 7:30 p.m.

Follow the Nature Center’s ranger along our wooded paths looking for glowworms in the leaf litter under the light of the moon. We’ll end the hike with a show by beetles in the Lampyridae family, better known as lightning bugs and fireflies. FEE: $3 per person. 
Wear shoes for hiking.

TREE ID HIKE –  July 21, 1 p.m.

Join Ranger Jess to learn how to identify trees by their bark, branches, and leaves along the Donna Lindgren Tree Identification Trail. Hear stories of how people have used wood over the years for many different things. Discover 45 trees along the trail, which transverses a variety of habitats including abandoned agricultural fields and pastures, deciduous forest, wetland, and pine plantation. FREE; wear appropriate hiking shoes.

NATURE AS MENTOR – July 31, 1–2:30 p.m. 

Join Marlow Shami, a nature-based teacher, artist, healer and writer, who will conduct the Nature As Mentor program for adults. 
Learn the magnificent language of nature in this powerful workshop. Discover your unique niche as part of our planet’s restoration plan. The wisdom of elder/earth-based cultures as well as recent empirical research in the fields of eco-psychology and environmental psychology, mindfulness-based stress reduction, meditation, and energy medicine, provide the foundation of this program. Attendees acquire simple tools to access the guidance they seek and restoration needed for negotiating the challenges of daily life.

CHRIS ROWLANDS: Puppeteer and Singer – Aug. 2, 7 p.m.

Chris Rowlands is an award-winning singer and songwriter who offers an interactive kid-friendly presentation for those who love music and nature. He creatively blends music, comedy, and education in a fast paced show that teaches and inspires. Chris brings animals to life through song, dance, puppets, and colorful props, to teach children about animals and their habitats.

Learn to fish, take a hike in June at Ansonia Nature Center

ANSONIA - The Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center,10 Deerfield Road, will hold a variety of educational activities in June.

CT DEEP FISHING EDUCATION PROGRAM – June 8, 9:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m. 

The Ansonia Nature Center is sponsoring this Department of Energy & Environmental Protection C.F.E.P. (Connecticut Fishing Education Program) Family Fishing Class.

This is an opportunity for interested people of all ages to learn about fish identification, how and where fish live, fishing tackle and techniques, fishing laws and regulations, how to tie a strong knot, how to clean and cook your catch, sportsmanship and safety, how to cast, and where to catch fish. 
The two-hour classroom instruction at the Nature Center will be immediately followed by fishing with the instructors at Colony Pond in Ansonia until 3:30 p.m. All equipment and bait will be provided. 
Adults over the age of 16 are required to have a fishing license to participate in the fishing event. This free program, taught by Certified DEEP C.F.E.P. Instructors, is open to everyone 7 years old and up; children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

FANCI ANNUAL MEETING AND POTLUCK SUPPER – June 12, 5:30 p.m. 

If you’re a FANCI member who can’t make the regular meetings, now is the time to find out what we’ve been up to! Reports and the election of officers will take place. Bring your own table setting and a dish to share (12 servings), and your ideas and suggestions for next year’s activities. Please register in advance.

MUD KITCHEN MADNESS – June 15, 1 p.m.

Calling children ages 3-5 years old and parents who don’t mind letting their children get muddy. Come to the Nature Center and use water and dirt to “cook up” mud pie masterpieces. 
Children will learn a physical understanding of volume, measuring, and the effects of water on soil. They will have pots, pans, spoons, bowls, and other materials to play in the mud. This program will be gently supervised by Ranger Amie. Bring your own apron, towels and a change of clothes. 
Your children will get muddy from head to toe so make sure they wear old clothes and shoes you don’t care about.

FIELD TRIP:  Silver Sands Mollusk Walk – June 22, 9:30 a.m.

Meet the Nature Center staff at Silver Sands State Park in Milford for a natural history walk. We will join Tim Chaucer, Director of Milford Marine Institute, Inc. and Gulf Pond Museum, for a leisurely interpretive walk to learn more about Connecticut’s marine mollusks. We will find examples of 2 of the 5 groups of mollusks, discuss and handle them, and learn the differences between the gastropods and pelecypods and which ones are vegetarians or carnivorous. This walk will last about 60 to 90 minutes. Meet in the Silver Sands parking lot at 9:15 am. FEE: $6 per person. Please call to register.

EXPLORE REDWING POND –  June 22, 1 p.m.

Join Ranger Dawn to learn what critters inhabit our beautiful Redwing Pond. Start with a short talk on the types of reptiles, amphibians, and insects you will see during your exploration. Head to the pond with nets and buckets to collect and observe these creatures. At the end participants will release the animals back into their home, the pond. Family-friendly program; children must be accompanied by an adult. Wear appropriate clothes and shoes for this wet and muddy adventure. FREE; please register in advance.

THEMED GUIDED HIKE: Wild Medicine in the Park – June 30, 1 p.m.

Join Ranger Jess for our Sunday guided themed hike. She will take you on this wild plant foray! You’ll hike around the Nature Center property hunting out wild medicinal plants and learning to identify them. She will also teach you how to make them into medicine. Sample some edible plants along the way too! Yum… For children 8 years old and up accompanied by an adult.  FEE: $6 per person.

Make crafts, learn firecraft skills in December at Ansonia Nature Center

ANSONIA - The Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center, 10 Deerfield Road, has scheduled fun activities for December.

PRINCIPLES OF FIRECRAFT – 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Dec. 15
Basic firecraft skills are very important for campers. Learn how to be the family camp-out fire starter in this session on the safe and efficient way to build and tend to a fire. Ranger Dan will teach us about wood gathering, fire safety, and fire starting with only one match. We’ll even roast some marshmallows! 
Children must be accompanied by an adult. Fee: $6 per person.

Pet Loss Grief Support Session – By appointment
Losing a beloved animal can be tragic and a very emotional time for humans. There are numerous resources to turn to for the loss of a human loved one, but limited options for when we lose an animal. This free support session is for those who have lost an animal or have one in the process of moving on. Please call Susan Wilson at 1-802-379-4449 for an appointment.

Sunday Guided Hikes – 1 p.m.
Join a Nature Center guide Sunday afternoons for fun, exercise, and learning about our trails! 

Fiber Arts Group – Tuesdays, 6 p.m.
Get together with others to work on your fiber arts projects! Bring any kind of fiber work—knitting, felting, crocheting, etc. A great way to dedicate time to your handiwork and socialize too. Free.

Yoga for a Healthy Mind and Body – Thursdays, 6:30 p.m.
Hatha Yoga instructor and practitioner Pam Mellitz will lead us into a healthier lifestyle through stretching, breath control and gentle exercise. 
The 90-minute classes require a mat or thick towel; dress for easy movement. Class is limited to 12 students. Cost is $7 per class. Please call Pam to register at 203-888-4124.

Creature Features – Saturdays, noon
Come to meet our furry, scaly, and feathery animal ambassadors. You’ll have the chance to touch and hold them in this free family program for all ages.
