Ansonia Nature Center to sponsor DEEP family fishing class


ANSONIA - Learn to fish for free! 
The Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center is sponsoring the Department of Environmental Protection C.A.R.E. (Connecticut Aquatic Resources Education) family fishing class. 
This opportunity is for interested people of all ages to learn about fish identification, fishing tackle, and techniques, how to cast, where to catch fish, and much more. 

The two-hour classroom instruction will be held at the nature center June 22 from 6-8 p.m. and will be followed by fishing with the instructors and CARE interns at Colony Pond from 8:30-11:30 a.m. June 24.

All equipment and bait will be provided. Adults over the age of 16 are required to have a fishing license to participate in the event. 

Both adults and youth should acquire proper licensing online at the CT DEEP licensing system.

Learn to fish, take a hike in June at Ansonia Nature Center


ANSONIA - The Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center,10 Deerfield Road, will hold a variety of educational activities in June.


CT DEEP FISHING EDUCATION PROGRAM – June 8, 9:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m. 
The Ansonia Nature Center is sponsoring this Department of Energy & Environmental Protection C.F.E.P. (Connecticut Fishing Education Program) Family Fishing Class.

This is an opportunity for interested people of all ages to learn about fish identification, how and where fish live, fishing tackle and techniques, fishing laws and regulations, how to tie a strong knot, how to clean and cook your catch, sportsmanship and safety, how to cast, and where to catch fish. 
The two-hour classroom instruction at the Nature Center will be immediately followed by fishing with the instructors at Colony Pond in Ansonia until 3:30 p.m. All equipment and bait will be provided. 
Adults over the age of 16 are required to have a fishing license to participate in the fishing event. This free program, taught by Certified DEEP C.F.E.P. Instructors, is open to everyone 7 years old and up; children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

FANCI ANNUAL MEETING AND POTLUCK SUPPER – June 12, 5:30 p.m. 
If you’re a FANCI member who can’t make the regular meetings, now is the time to find out what we’ve been up to! Reports and the election of officers will take place. Bring your own table setting and a dish to share (12 servings), and your ideas and suggestions for next year’s activities. Please register in advance.

MUD KITCHEN MADNESS – June 15, 1 p.m.
Calling children ages 3-5 years old and parents who don’t mind letting their children get muddy. Come to the Nature Center and use water and dirt to “cook up” mud pie masterpieces. 
Children will learn a physical understanding of volume, measuring, and the effects of water on soil. They will have pots, pans, spoons, bowls, and other materials to play in the mud. This program will be gently supervised by Ranger Amie. Bring your own apron, towels and a change of clothes. 
Your children will get muddy from head to toe so make sure they wear old clothes and shoes you don’t care about.

FIELD TRIP:  Silver Sands Mollusk Walk – June 22, 9:30 a.m.
Meet the Nature Center staff at Silver Sands State Park in Milford for a natural history walk. We will join Tim Chaucer, Director of Milford Marine Institute, Inc. and Gulf Pond Museum, for a leisurely interpretive walk to learn more about Connecticut’s marine mollusks. We will find examples of 2 of the 5 groups of mollusks, discuss and handle them, and learn the differences between the gastropods and pelecypods and which ones are vegetarians or carnivorous. This walk will last about 60 to 90 minutes. Meet in the Silver Sands parking lot at 9:15 am. FEE: $6 per person. Please call to register.

EXPLORE REDWING POND –  June 22, 1 p.m.
Join Ranger Dawn to learn what critters inhabit our beautiful Redwing Pond. Start with a short talk on the types of reptiles, amphibians, and insects you will see during your exploration. Head to the pond with nets and buckets to collect and observe these creatures. At the end participants will release the animals back into their home, the pond. Family-friendly program; children must be accompanied by an adult. Wear appropriate clothes and shoes for this wet and muddy adventure. FREE; please register in advance.

THEMED GUIDED HIKE: Wild Medicine in the Park – June 30, 1 p.m.
Join Ranger Jess for our Sunday guided themed hike. She will take you on this wild plant foray! You’ll hike around the Nature Center property hunting out wild medicinal plants and learning to identify them. She will also teach you how to make them into medicine. Sample some edible plants along the way too! Yum… For children 8 years old and up accompanied by an adult.  FEE: $6 per person.

Dates: Aug. 5–9, Aug. 12–16.
For children 6 to 11 years old who love the outdoors and wildlife, these popular classes are not only educational but also a chance to explore the park’s 156 acres. 
We will visit a variety of habitats in the park such as wetlands, fields, and woodlands. Hikes, games, crafts, and cooking will be incorporated into our lessons. A great choice for a fun late-summer experience! 

TUITION PER WEEK: $150 priority students (Ansonia residents and current family-level FANCI members), $175 all others.

Ansonia Nature Center to hold fishing class, survival school, more

To mark CT Trails Day June 2 with hike 

ANSONIA - The Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center, 10 Deerfield Road, has scheduled a variety of fun and educational activities in June.

CONNECTICUT TRAILS DAY –  June 2, 9 a.m.
Join Nature Center Director Alison Rubelmann and Ranger Daniel Bosques for this morning walk. 

Discover the beauty of the Nature Center’s typical New England woodland during the Connecticut Forest and Park Association’s annual Trails Day weekend. We might get lucky and find a lady slipper or two.

This moderate hike will also focus on the history of the land, and we will visit the settlement of the Paugasucks. 


Bring water, a snack, and bug spray, and wear sturdy shoes. Suitable for older children and adults. Free.

The Nature Center is sponsoring this CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection C.F.E.P. (Connecticut Fishing Education Program) Family Fishing Class. 

The classroom instruction will be held June 9 at the Nature Center; fishing with the instructors and DEEP representatives will take place June 12 at Colony Pond in Ansonia. All equipment and bait will be provided. 
Adults over the age of 16 must have a fishing license to participate. 
Please pre-register for this free program, open to 7 years old and up; children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

WILD EDIBLE HARVEST AND FEAST – June 9, 1 p.m.
Join Rangers Jessica and Dawn on an epic foraging adventure. Together we will explore the wilds of the Nature Center’s property to learn about and harvest wild edible plants. The program will conclude with tasting prepared wild edible treats like garlic mustard pesto, knotweed crumble, and dandelion fritters back at the building. 

For adults and children ages 9 and up. Fee: $6 per person. Please pre-register.

SURVIVAL SCHOOL: Stay Dry, Stay Warm! –  June 10, 10 a.m.–1 p.m.
One of the basic necessities for a survival situation is shelter. Staying dry goes hand in hand with keeping warm. 

Join Ranger Dan in scouting for a suitable place to build a shelter, and help construct a hideaway made from the surroundings. Learning this survival skill is a great reason to get out into nature! 
Be advised: We will be traveling off-trails, so insect awareness and terrain are your own consideration.
Ages 14 and up. Class size limited; you must pre-register. 
Fee: $10 per person.

NATURE AND PLAY FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM AND OTHER DEVELOPMENTAL DELAYS - June 10, 2:30 p.m. 
Do you have a child aged 8-12 with autism and other developmental delays? Would you like to join a group playtime that meets once a month? Gently led by Ranger Amie, we will explore ways to introduce your child to playing indoors and outdoors at the Nature Center. 

Activities include meeting animal friends, taking a walk or easy hike, and nature crafts. Playtime begins at 2:30 p.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m. (or however long your child would like to stay). 
Please arrive on time. We will meet inside at the small classroom; children must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the class. Free. 
Pre-registration required; group limited to 10 children with adult. Activity, Insect Safari.

FIELD TRIP: Earth Tones Native Plant Nursery – June 16, 10 a.m. (meet at nursery, 9:45 a.m.)
Join the Nature Center for a field trip to Earth Tones Native Plant Nursery in Woodbury. We will be provided a guided tour as we walk and enjoy this beautiful rustic setting. Learn about New England’s grasses, ferns, perennials, shrubs and trees and how you can create an amazing landscape using natives. 

If you’re looking for plants that flourish without synthetic pesticides, rarely need watering, provide food and habitat for wildlife, be sure to bring some shopping money. 
Space is limited so pre-registration is required.

CREATURE FEATURE: Meet Our Scaly Friends - noon June 16
Snakes, lizards, and turtles, oh my! Come learn about the Nature Center’s non-native and native reptiles. Get a chance to even touch some during the program. Take a short walk around the pond and to our snake boards to see what native species you can observe here in the park. 

This program is for all ages. Free; please register in advance.

Mondays Night Trail Run, 5:30 p.m.
This is a call to all of the runners who want something that is out of the ordinary. Ranger Dan will lead you through our 156-acre network of trails while you burn off the weekend's extra calories. We guarantee this free program is the best way to start off your week.
Please pre-register and wear appropriate footwear.

Tuesdays Family Organic Garden Program, 3:30–5 p.m.We’ll lead fun, family-friendly activities in our organic garden. Learn about growing a variety of fruits and vegetables. Dress appropriately; you will get water and/or soil on your clothing. free, with the potential to take home fresh local produce!


Pet Loss Grief Support Group - By appointment
Losing a beloved animal can be tragic and a very emotional time for humans. There are numerous resources to turn to for the loss of a human loved one; however, there are limited options for when we lose an animal. Susan Wilson has created this free support group for those who have lost an animal or have one in the process of moving on.

July 31–Aug. 4, Aug. 7–11 (FULL), Aug. 14–18, 9 am–3 p.m.               
For children from 5 to 11 years old who love the outdoors and wildlife, these popular classes will be not only educational but also a chance to explore the 156 acres the park offers. We explore a variety of the park’s habitats. A great choice for a fun late-summer experience! 
TUITION: $150 priority students (Ansonia residents and FANCI members), $175 all others. 

CREATURES OF LONG ISLAND SOUND –July 6, 11 a.m.This is a great weekday family program to learn all about the creatures of Long Island Sound. We will explore the Nature Center’s salt water tank and learn how to identify and hold common critters you will find at New England’s local beaches this summer. 
FEE: $6 per person.

DEEP FAMILY FISHING CLASS – July 8, 9 a.m.–2 p.m. The Nature Center is sponsoring this CT Department of Energy & Environmental Protection C.A.R.E. Program class.

MOONSHINE AND FIREFLY HIKE – July 9, 8 p.m. Follow the Nature Center’s ranger along our wooded paths looking for glowworms in the leaf litter under the light of the moon.  
We’ll end the hike with a show by beetles in the Lampyridae family, better known as lightning bugs and fireflies. FEE: $3 per person. Wear shoes for  hiking.

MONDAY NIGHT TRAIL RUN – Mondays starting July 10, 5:30-6:30 p.m. This is a call to all of the runners who want something that is out of the ordinary! Ranger Dan will lead you through our 156-acre network of trails, while you burn off the weekend's extra calories.

CHRIS ROWLANDS: Puppeteer and Singer – July 28, 7 p.m. Rowlands is an award-winning singer and songwriter who offers an interactive kid-friendly presentation for those who love music and nature.  Rowlands brings animals to life through song, dance, puppets, and colorful props, to teach children about animals and their habitats.
