Barnum Museum in Bridgeport to present talk on Ebenezer Bassett

BRIDGEPORT - The Barnum Museum will welcome diplomat Christopher Teal at 2 p.m. April 14.
Teal is a senior foreign diplomat with the State Department in Washington, D.C.
He will give a public screening of his new documentary on Ebenezer Bassett, “A Diplomat of Consequence,” parts of which were filmed in Seymour and Derby with local historians.
Bassett was the nation’s first African-American diplomat.

He was appointed to Haiti in 1869 by President Ulysses S. Grant where he served with distinction.
Bassett was born in Litchfield, the son and grandson of Connecticut Black Governors.
He was raised in Derby where he first attended school.
From Derby he went on to attend Wilbraham Academy in Massachusetts and later The Connecticut State Normal School, present-day Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, where he graduated with honors in 1855.
On March 20 Central Connecticut State University renamed a campus classroom building to Ebenezer Bassett Hall.

Teal is also author of the book Hero of Hispaniola: America's First Black Diplomat, Ebenezer D. Bassett.

DERBY - Expectant parents, new parents and their families can get a good feel for the area’s maternity and child care resources from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 27 at Griffin Hospital’s Annual Baby Fair.
Held at The Childbirth Center at Griffin Hospital, 130 Division St., this free event features more than 30 exhibitors, door prizes, tours of the Childbirth Center and information about the Center’s classes and support groups for before and after childbirth.
Griffin Hospital offers family-centered maternity care in an environment designed to best meet individual and family needs.
The Center features private, family-friendly rooms, expert staff for maternal and newborn care, and lactation consultants.
The Childbirth Center received the Baby-Friendly designation from the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), an international honor is given to hospitals that offer an optimal level of care for infant feeding and that help parents make informed choices about feeding and caring for their babies.

DERBY - Charity is on tap again at BAD SONS Beer Co. for The Great Give® 2019!
Throughout the month of April, proceeds from the BAD SONS’ Charitable Tap Line will be going towards a “great” cause.
A dollar from every beer purchased from the Charity Tap Line will be going toward a prize for Valley nonprofit organizations participating in The Great Give® 2019.
Customers who purchase a pint from the charity tap will receive a token, which they can use to cast a vote for their favorite Valley nonprofit participating in The Great Give®.
The organization with the most votes at 8 p.m. May 2 will get the Charity Tap Prize Pool.
The Great Give® 2019, which will be taking place from 8 a.m. May 1 to 8 p.m. May 2, aims to raise $1.9 million in 36-hours for nonprofits serving Greater New Haven. Approximately 400 nonprofits have registered to participate in the online giving event organized by The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven.
“At BAD SONS Beer Co. we believe the popularity of craft beer can and should be used to bring people together for the benefit of the local community,” said Mike Student, Brand Commander at BAD SONS Beer Co. “Our ‘BAD SONS doing GOOD THINGS’ charity tap line was introduced for this exact reason and through this tap line, we have been able to create awareness and give back to local charities who support our Valley community. Also in April, and for the second year, the Valley Community Foundation, The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, and young professionals from around Connecticut are hosting a Board Matchmaking Happy Hour at BAD SONS.
That evening members of the young professional groups will be invited to get to know local nonprofits and find ways to connect as volunteers.
Valley nonprofits will each have a representative from their organization to meet potential volunteers and make a one-minute timed pitch about their organization. Contact the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce at (203) 925-4981 for more info and to register.
