The blue jays wait every day for me to put peanuts out. They swoop down and grab them before I can get back in the house - and before the squirrels can get any!
This morning I tossed eggshells onto the icy patio for three blue jays that were in the yard. A few minutes later they each swooped down and grabbed a shell. I was able to capture a photo of this one holding tight to his breakfast.
Seen through the window Thursday morning. I think it was 2 degrees at the time. After I took this photo I put two broken up eggshells out and they've been swooping down and flying off with them.
I know I've said it before but I think throwing eggshells in the yard for the blue jays has trained them to come around and wait for me to do just that. Here they are waiting this morning.
Regular readers know I've been putting egg shells out in the yard several times a week for the blue jays. Today I spied this guy enjoying one of the shells. (Photo taken through a needs-to-be-washed glass door.)
True story: Sometimes I'll make an egg for breakfast just so I can give the shell to my feathered friends. I believe I've trained the blue jays to come to our yard for the shells! I just saw one fly off with a piece of shell. He's sitting in the forsythia now. Hope he's enjoying his breakfast.
Sad to report I lost to a bird, but I did. I put egg shells out again this morning for my feathered friends of the blue jay variety. When I put shells outside I can see them from where I sit as I'm writing, with my camera near, ready for a photo opportunity.
But I somehow missed the blue jay getting the shells off the grass. They're gone. No photo today. Tomorrow is another day. (Dear reader: Hope you enjoy my occasional silliness ... trying to keep things light when I can.)

These photos were taken a few minutes apart and I'm not even sure if it's the same bird. On Thursday I wrote this postabout 'training' the blue jays. And so the saga continues.
New Year's resolution: To get photos of a blue jay taking an eggshell off the ground and flying away with it. That would be a great capture. Meanwhile this morning what did I see? An eggshell stuck in a tree. I hope they can retrieve it.
Another morning, another blue jay. With five of them around the yard lately it is getting easy to capture a photo. I just realized it's the same pose as yesterday...maybe it's the same bird. They must have gotten the eggshells I threw out yesterday because there are footprints and holes in the snow. Hmm ... maybe I will have an egg for breakfast. I should feed my newfound friends.
I threw egg shells out for the blue jays this morning, and of course the shells dropped under the snow. To my surprise about an hour later a blue jay came over, pulled one out of the snow and flew away. Now I know they can smell the shells. I wasn't sure if they only found them by sight. Below is one of the five blue jays hanging around here this morning. Photo taken through the window. I haven't ventured outside. I just missed getting a picture of the one grabbing the egg shell. Next time!
I noticed these blue jays at the geranium plant and luckily my camera was nearby. Photo was taken through slider. Otherwise it probably would be a bit clearer.
