DERBY - More than 400 participants raised an event-record $77,000 at the 14th Annual 5K Walk/Run to Benefit the Center for Cancer Care  on Sept. 24.

“We are grateful to all the 5K Walk-Run sponsors and participants for giving us the tools to provide strength and comfort for individuals undergoing cancer treatment,” said Griffin Health President and CEO Patrick Charmel.

“All the funds raised today help patients overcome the financial obstacles that can adversely affect their treatment and recovery. This includes purchasing patient-centered medical technology, providing assistance with transportation, clothing and nutritional supplements, and helping to offset the cost of utility bills.”

The event featured awards for the top individual fundraiser and top team fundraiser selected from the 410 participants and 29 teams.

The winner of the William C. Powanda Memorial Award for the top fundraiser was Stephanie Ventimiglia, of Derby, who raised more than $6,000. Ventimiglia’s team, Lou’s Legacy, raised $10,000 and won the Team Synergy Award as the top fundraising team.

Alex Romanovsky of Derby was the winner of the Make It Happen Spirit Award, which recognizes an individual who exhibits tireless effort and support for the event.

The Walk/Run was sponsored by Jefferson Radiology, Renewal by Anderson, Rand Whitney, Dermatology Physicians of Connecticut, All About You, Coordinated Transportation Solutions, Enterprise, Drs. Sudipta and Bindu Dey, Smilow Cancer Hospital, D’Addario Auto, R.D. Scinto, Ion Bank Foundation, Forest Construction, Centek Engineering, Precision Aerospace, and Morizio Law Firm. In-kind sponsors included Big Y, BJ’s, Coca-Cola, Market 32, Rockland Bakery, ShopRite, Stani Dairy, Stop & Shop, and Unidine.

Neon Glows Color Run returns to benefit CT Hurricanes Drum and Bugle Corps

June event will be virtual this year

After taking a year off in 2020, Neon Glows will be held in June 2021.
To ensure the safety of participants and volunteers it will be a virtual race this year.

This means you can have all of the same fun and excitement at a time and place of your choosing. We encourage you to sign up with friends and family that you can participate with!
After you complete your run/walk you will be able to submit your time on this website.
Participants can submit a 'run anywhere' time or a 'Derby 5k' time if you want it recorded that you ran the actual race course on the Derby Greenway.
Be sure to take lots of pictures and share the fun on our Facebook page at facebook.com/NeonGlowsColorRun.

Every participant will receive a race kit containing the race T-
shirt and three color packets that you can use at the beginning, middle and end of your run or walk.
You can even have some fun in the backyard with the family. The color powder is safe and environmentally friendly, so it can be used anywhere. It will wash away with the next rain.
Race kits will be shipped on June 1.
There will be a $5 shipping fee or you can select local pickup.
Local pickup will be on June 5 and June 12 from 11 a.m.-noon at Matthies Field, 115 Silvermine Road, Seymour.

Proceeds to benefit the CT Hurricanes Drum and Bugle Corps.

Seymour Pink to host decorating contest to mark breast cancer awareness month

Pinkest House/Yard/Business Decorating Contest

Sharing from Seymour Pink founder Mary Deming:

"We love seeing all of the pink ribbons and encouraging messages and decor along our normal race route. Since we cannot be together, that doesn’t mean we cannot SEE MORE PINK. In fact, we can see even more!

"We are challenging participants to decorate their house and/or yards pink for race weekend and the kickoff of Breast Cancer Awareness month [in October].

"Businesses and storefronts can participate too! Since we are virtual, everyone can participate – even if you’re not on our traditional race route and even if you’re not in Connecticut. Help everyone SEE MORE PINK this October.

"Submit photos to us at poundingthepavementforpink@gmail.com with subject line Home Contest.

"All entries must be submitted by 4 p.m on Saturday, Oct. 3. We will be sharing all entries on social media and will compile into a slideshow at the end of the event."
