Hope Lives raises $6K for The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital

DERBY - The 19^th Hope Lives event raised $6,000 for breast cancer screening services at The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital in Derby, and recognized a Griffin caregiver for her efforts in breast cancer treatment.

Hope Lives is a non-profit organization associated with Horizon of Hope, a national campaign by Longaberger Baskets to raise funds for the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer research and local breast cancer services. 

Longaberger Independent Consultant Maria Ammar of Massachusetts has organized the luncheon fundraiser as part of the campaign, raising over $100,000 for the Center. 

The donation will be used to help local women pay for breast cancer screening services.

The fundraiser also recognized Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness Manager Tori Kochiss with the Hope Award. The award is given to an individual who embodies Hope Lives' mission to support individuals and families by promoting breast cancer awareness and raising funds to support facilities that focus on breast health, education, prevention, and treatment. 

Kochiss is regarded as an ambitious, well-rounded leader by her fellow Griffin Health caregivers. While a new manager at the Center, she became credentialed in Breast Navigation and earned her MBA in Health Care Management. She introduced Bella Blankets, a comforting cover for mammography units, helped improve access to genetic testing and has overseen the implementation of new advanced technology at the Center.

“Tori is an incredible asset to The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness,” the nomination for Kochiss stated. “The most impressive qualities about Tori are her passion and commitment to women’s imaging. Her tireless dedication to her patients and her team is extraordinary.”

The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital opened in 2011 and primarily serves the Lower Naugatuck Valley and surrounding communities. It combines state-of-the-art technology, a team of highly trained physicians and staff, and a Planetree healing environment to offer patients a comprehensive range of personalized breast care and wellness services. 

The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness features two new, state-of-the-art digital mammography suites with 3D mammography (tomosynthesis) capability, a breast ultrasound suite, and the most advanced system available to perform stereotactic biopsy.  The Center also utilizes a rapid diagnostic model where patients are often given test results the same day imaging tests are performed, and if indicated, follow up testing (ultrasound, breast biopsy) and even consultation with a breast surgeon are often available the same day if the patient’s schedule permits.

Huge thanks goes to Rose's Family Restaurant in Oxford for a beautiful evening

Last Thursday the wonderful folks at Rose's Family Restaurant in Oxford honored breast cancer survivors who had registered for Saturday's Pounding the Pavement for Pink 5K.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

A friend and I attended the dinner and were overwhelmed by the family's generosity and thoughtfulness.

We enjoyed a delicious buffet and we all took home a pink rose.

I encourage my local friends to support Rose's! The restaurant has been a long-time supporter of Seymour Pink, a community's fight against breast cancer, and it's time to support them.

Luncheon to benefit The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital in Derby

ORANGE - The 19th Annual Hope Lives benefit luncheon will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 25 at Race Brook Country Club, 246 Derby Ave.

The full course luncheon will help promote breast cancer awareness and raise funds to support programs offered by The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital in Derby. 

The programs focus on breast health education, prevention, and treatment. 

The event will feature raffles, a silent auction, a dessert station, and the presentation of the Hope Lives Award, which honors an individual who is making a difference in the fight against breast cancer.

“I’m very proud and honored to continue to make a difference in the Valley and for women in need of a free mammogram,” said Hope Lives Founder Maria Ammar. “Many members of my family have been affected by cancer and others battled breast cancer and are no longer with us.

"This event is a labor of love as I believe that one day we will find a cure for cancer,” Ammar said.

OXFORD - Join Chaz & AJ from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday for a classic car show at Quarry Walk, 300 Oxford Road. 

The event to benefit Seymour Pink will feature live music, raffles, games, food trucks, beer, awards, and more!

There is NO live kids' run this year for the 10th Annual [Pounding the Pavement for Pink in downtown Seymour]. As a measure of safety with the younger children, it was suggested that we keep it virtual.
