Griffin 5K walk/run raises $77K to benefit the Center for Cancer Care in Derby

DERBY - More than 400 participants raised an event-record $77,000 at the 14th Annual 5K Walk/Run to Benefit the Center for Cancer Care on Sept. 24.
“We are grateful to all the 5K Walk-Run sponsors and participants for giving us the tools to provide strength and comfort for individuals undergoing cancer treatment,” said Griffin Health President and CEO Patrick Charmel.
“All the funds raised today help patients overcome the financial obstacles that can adversely affect their treatment and recovery. This includes purchasing patient-centered medical technology, providing assistance with transportation, clothing and nutritional supplements, and helping to offset the cost of utility bills.”
The event featured awards for the top individual fundraiser and top team fundraiser selected from the 410 participants and 29 teams.
The winner of the William C. Powanda Memorial Award for the top fundraiser was Stephanie Ventimiglia, of Derby, who raised more than $6,000. Ventimiglia’s team, Lou’s Legacy, raised $10,000 and won the Team Synergy Award as the top fundraising team.
Alex Romanovsky of Derby was the winner of the Make It Happen Spirit Award, which recognizes an individual who exhibits tireless effort and support for the event.
The Walk/Run was sponsored by Jefferson Radiology, Renewal by Anderson, Rand Whitney, Dermatology Physicians of Connecticut, All About You, Coordinated Transportation Solutions, Enterprise, Drs. Sudipta and Bindu Dey, Smilow Cancer Hospital, D’Addario Auto, R.D. Scinto, Ion Bank Foundation, Forest Construction, Centek Engineering, Precision Aerospace, and Morizio Law Firm. In-kind sponsors included Big Y, BJ’s, Coca-Cola, Market 32, Rockland Bakery, ShopRite, Stani Dairy, Stop & Shop, and Unidine.

14th annual 5K slated to benefit Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital in Derby
The 14th Annual 5K Walk/Run to benefit the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital will take place Sept. 24.
DERBY - The Annual 5K Walk/Run to benefit the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital, 350 Seymour Ave., will be back as an in-person event to celebrate its 14th year Sept. 24.
This non-competitive, family-friendly event begins with day-of registration at 7:30 a.m., and the walk/run kicking off at 9 a.m.
Registration is $35 and includes a T-shirt. The registration fees will increase by $5 after Sept. 11. Pre-registration is encouraged at griffinhealth.org/5k.
All proceeds are dedicated to providing exceptional, personalized cancer care and to help ease the financial burden of Griffin’s cancer patients face as they undergo treatment.
Sponsorship opportunities include signage at the event, logos on the event promotional materials and T-shirts, recognition from the stage, and the opportunity to have a table to distribute products at the event.
The 5K draws walkers and runners from all over the Lower Naugatuck Valley, including participants from Derby, Ansonia, Shelton, Seymour, Oxford, Naugatuck, and all over the state.
The 5K Walk/Run was started by the caregivers of the Cancer Center as a way to raise funds to purchase wigs for patients. The first Walk/Run exceeded expectations drawing over 250 participants and raising more than $25,000, providing opportunity for additional financial support for patients as they undergo cancer treatment. The 5K has drawn thousands of participants over the years and raised more than $595,000 to help support local cancer survivors in its 13-year history.
Participants can walk or run individually, form a team with their family, friends and co-workers, and collect pledges and payments. Awards will be presented to the top fundraising team and the top fundraising individual at the event.
Participants can also purchase a commemorative sign for $100 to honor or memorialize a loved one that will be displayed at the Center for Cancer Care.

5K raises $46,000 for Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital in Derby
DERBY - More than 430 participants raised more than $46,000 at the ninth annual 5K Walk/Run to Benefit the Center for Cancer Care Sept. 30.
In addition to helping purchase new equipment for the hospital’s Radiation Oncology Department, proceeds from the fun, non-competitive event help fund patient support programs at the Center for Cancer Care and financial assistance for cancer patients for a variety needs, including housing, clothing and grocery bills, transportation, wigs, and salon services.
The Walk/Run was supported by the Ansonia and Derby Police departments, and its sponsors: The Ansonia Rod and Gun Club; Jefferson Radiology; Birmingham Health Center (Spectrum Health), The EDGE Fitness Clubs, Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven Hospital, Teamsters Local 1150, All About You, Centrix Dental, Fletcher Thompson, Dr. Mark Melendez Cosmetic & Reconstructive Surgery, Yale Therapeutic Radiology, HAN Network, and Star 99.9 FM.
