Griffin Hospital in Derby offers free menopause wellness workshop


DERBY - The Griffin Center for Healthy Living will host a new, free health education program to help women care for their well-being throughout menopause.

Women's Health and Menopause is a three-week workshop that helps support metabolic health, manage body composition, and nourish the female body through the menopause journey and beyond. 

This workshop will explain how metabolic changes for women in midlife affect muscle, fat mass, metabolism, and increase risk for osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, weight gain, and diabetes. 

Certified Diabetes Care & Education Specialist Carolyn Gundell, MS, CDCES, will share tips, credible resources regarding long-term, post-menopause health risks, and lifestyle habits every woman in menopause should consider to support healthy weight loss, muscle mass and strength, nutritional status, and metabolic balance.


There will be a session on Tuesdays, July 21 and 28, and Aug. 4 from 4-5:30 p.m. at Griffin Hospital. 

This free wellness program is part of Griffin’s commitment to improve community wellness through free education, guidance and assistance in preventing and managing chronic disease. Griffin Health in Derby to host education program about weight loss meds


DERBY - The Griffin Center for Healthy Living will host a new free health education program about GLP-1 and non-GLP-1 medications that support weight-loss and metabolic health.

Thriving on GLP-1 for Metabolic & Weight Management is a three-week workshop for anyone considering starting a GLP-1 or presently taking one. 

This workshop will explain the science of obesity, weight regulation, how GLP-1 medications work, and their benefits and risks. Certified Diabetes Care & Education Specialist Carolyn Gundell, MS, CDCES, will share strategies for managing medication side effects and discuss evaluating eating patterns, physical activity benefits, and other lifestyle habits that help sustain long-term weight loss and reduce health risks.

There will be a session on Thursdays July 30, and Aug. 6 and 13 from 4-5:30 p.m. at Griffin Hospital, 130 Division St.

Griffin Hospital in Derby to offer free heart health workshops


DERBY - The Griffin Center for Healthy Living will offer free workshops to help individuals manage heart conditions this February.

The Heart Health Workshop is a free, three-week workshop that provides health education on heart disease with an emphasis on the management of hypertension and elevated cholesterol.

There will be a workshop session on Thursdays Feb. 5, 12, and 19 from 10-11:30 a.m. and another on Thursdays Feb. 26 and March 5 and 12 from 4-5:30 p.m. at The Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital, 350 Seymour Ave.


Based on guidelines by the American Heart Association, this program educates and empowers individuals to care for their hearts through nutrition, exercise, body composition, and stress reduction education. 

Weekly speakers include a certified diabetes care and education specialist.

Griffin Health in Oxford to host cancer-fighting soup cooking demo


OXFORD - Griffin Center for Healthy Living Teaching Kitchen will host a free health education program on cancer-fighting foods.


Cancer-Fighting Benefits of Soup will be held at 5 p.m. March 20 at The Griffin Center for Healthy Living at Quarry Walk, 300 Oxford Road. 


In recognition of Colorectal Cancer Month, former executive director of Massaro Farm and sustainable nutrition expert Caty Poole will demonstrate the basics of making vegetable, chicken and bone stock at home while discussing research that discovered how the principle components of chicken soup promote white blood cells that consume bacteria and viruses capable of infectious diseases.

Griffin Hospital Center in Oxford to host Heart Healthy Winter Cooking demo


OXFORD - Griffin Center for Healthy Living Teaching Kitchen will host a free health education program and a cooking demonstration to help individuals boost their heart health this winter.


Heart Healthy Winter Cooking will be held at 5 p.m. Feb. 20 at The Griffin Center for Healthy Living at Quarry Walk, 300 Oxford Road. 

Former executive director of Massaro Farm and sustainable nutrition expert Caty Poole will demonstrate how to incorporate root vegetables and healthy staples such as sweet potatoes into winter recipes while preparing Winter Pasta Primavera and a Winter Wheat Berry Bowl inspired by Forks Over Knives Wheat Berry Salad.

Free education event slated at The Griffin Center for Healthy Living in Oxford


OXFORD - The Griffin Center for Healthy Living Teaching Kitchen presents Building a Healthy Gut Microbiome Featuring Fermented Foods Sept. 26 at 5 p.m. at The Griffin Center for Healthy Living at Quarry Walk, 300 Oxford Road.

Join us for a free health education event that explores the basis of the body’s gut microbiome and how the standard American diet impacts functioning and inflammation. 

Former executive director of Massaro Farm and sustainable nutrition expert Caty Poole will discuss small changes that can improve the overall health of the intestinal tract, including the incorporation of fermented foods to balance the digestive system.

Valley United Way helps Griffin Hospital in Derby promote good health

The Valley United Way’s Special Needs Grants Program awarded Safe Kids and Griffin Hospital $4,000 to support monthly health education programs./ Contributed photo 

DERBY - The Valley United Way’s Special Needs Grants Program recently awarded Safe Kids and Griffin Hospital $4,000 to support monthly health education programs in area Head Start programs, preschools, public schools, and Boys & Girls Clubs.

The health presentations cover a range of topics including germs, seasonal safety and nutrition. 

The presentations include hands-on activities and every participant receives an activity book and an apple to take home. 
The program serves between 400 and 1,000 children each month.

“The lessons we learn at a young age tend to stick with us throughout life,” said Cathi Kellett, MA, Special Programs Coordinator for Griffin Hospital Community Outreach. 
“This grant will [allow] many children in the Valley [to] have a strong foundation to build a healthy lifestyle.”

The Valley United Way Special Needs Grant program is designed to provide funding for special needs or new programs. 
Funding for the program comes from donors who have expressed an interest in funding areas of importance to them, including health, education and graduation, income, elder care basic needs, youth and recreation, and housing and shelter.
