American Legion Post 16 to hold ceremony at Veterans Park in Shelton

“What we now call ‘Veterans Day’ began as ‘Armistice Day.’ It is historically significant that this day continues to be observed on the month, day, and hour that the guns fell silent at the end of World War I, on November 11, 1918, at 11:00 AM.”

To mark Veterans Day in Shelton, American Legion Sutter-Terlizzi Post 16 will conduct its annual Veterans Day Program today, November 11.

Ceremonies are open to the public and will begin at 10:30 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park in Shelton. This ceremony will be followed by a service at 11:30 a.m. at Post 16, 295 Old Bridgeport Ave. All are welcome to join in the ceremony at the Post.

American Legion Post 16 of Shelton strives to be a hub for patriotic programs, youth activities, and veterans helping veterans.

New members are always welcome join American Legion Post 16.

SHELTON - Sutter-Terlizzi American Legion Post 16 will hold a flag retirement ceremony at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 9.

Persons having flags to be retired may drop them off at the American Legion, 295 Old Bridgeport Ave. A metal red, white, and blue flag deposit box is located at the front porch of the post.

Post members as well as area Boy and Girl Scouts will take part in the ceremony. Scouts from each unit will be part of the flag retirement detail as well as two Girl Scouts reading the Poem “I am the Flag” and a Boy Scout leading the group in the Pledge of Allegiance.

American Legion Post 16 in Shelton to host Fallen Heroes Memorial in May

SHELTON - Sutter-Terlizzi American Legion Post 16 is making preparations to host The VAU Fallen Heroes Memorial here in The Valley in memory of America’s Global War on Terrorism Casualties. Over the next few months, the post will be organizing teams of volunteers, holding fundraisers and transforming the area around their pavilion into what will be treated as sacred ground for three days in May.

Post 16, with financial assistance from the Valley Community Foundation, is bringing the Fallen Heroes Memorial to Shelton as a way to honor and remember the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines whose names are on the Memorial, as well as the loved ones, and comrades in arms that they left behind.

On Memorial Day 2018, Veterans & Athletes United (VAU) completed the traveling Global War on Terror (GWOT) Memorial Flag. It is VAU's way of honoring close to 7000 GWOT fallen heroes and gold star families. The hope is to raise awareness of the sacrifice paid by our nation's heroes that keep this country free and flying under one flag.

This 28-foot wide by 6-foot tall American flag symbolizes the shape of the flag when draped on a fallen service members casket. It is formed of approximately 7000 dog tags of all those who have fallen in the War on Terror. There are 50 gold stars honoring all gold star families
nationwide. Displayed in front of the flag is a battle field cross sculpted from mahogany wood by veteran artist Alicia Dietz.

Tags are in alphabetical order ranging from 11SEPT 2001 to 31Dec 2019; thereafter the tags are in chronological order of the date Killed in Action (KIA). Sadly, as the war continues, they will continue to fill in the blank tags at the end of the flag.

For their memorial flag VAU used the DOD Global War on Terror DMDC Casualty List for all the names of the GWOT fallen heroes.

The Fallen Heroes Memorial will arrive in Shelton on May 12. It will be assembled at Sutter-Terlizzi American Legion Post 16 in Shelton on May 13 and depart on May 16, 2022. 

The memorial will be available for viewing from 11 a.m. Friday, May 13 until sunset on Sunday, May 15. 

The opening ceremony will be Friday at 6 p.m. and will include a reading of the Valley Global War on Terrorism Casualties' names followed by a rifle salute and taps. 

The closing ceremonies will be at 5 p.m. on Sunday and include the reading of all Connecticut Global War on Terrorism Casualties followed by a rifle salute and taps.

Programs will be conducted at the memorial during the day and counselors from the VetCenter will be available for those who wish to talk; however, security will be on site 24/7 to allow those who prefer to visit in the evening a quiet time to reflect. 

Visitors are urged to carpool if possible.

The traditional method of retirement is to incinerate the flag.

Sutter-Terlizzi Post 16 in Shelton to hold 57th Annual Summer Outing

Legion Post in Shelton to hold dinner, magic show to benefit Fisher House

SHELTON - Sutter-Terlizzi American Legion Post 16 is hosting a Family Pasta Dinner and Magic Show to benefit Fisher House. 
The fundraiser will be held Jan. 26 at the Post home, 295 Old Bridgeport Ave.

Spaghetti, meatballs, French bread, and salad will be served at 6 p.m., followed by the magic of Brian Lizotte at 7 p.m. 
The cost is $15 per person, kids 12 and under $6 and pre-school age children and under are free. Tickets may be purchased in advance at Post 16 most afternoons. Buying in advance is encouraged. 
Call the Post at 203-924-9887 to make sure it is open prior to coming to purchase tickets.

The members of American Legion Post 16 are U.S. veterans still serving America. Please join us in supporting the Fisher House. 

On April 11 the Fisher House Foundation broke ground on a new Fisher House at the VA Medical Center in West Haven. The Connecticut Fisher House will provide accommodations for the families of Connecticut veterans when facing a medical crisis. The house is scheduled to open early 2018.

The Fisher House Foundation builds and maintains long-term residential facilities near military hospitals nationwide for the families of seriously injured soldiers who need a place to stay during the long rehabilitation process. 
This is a vital need, which is not covered by any other resource. 
The facilities are supported by contributions and the VA Hospital and openings are granted in reverse order of rank, so that the lower enlisted soldier has first chance at the housing. 
The stay is free for the soldiers and their families for the entire time they are there.
Currently there are more than 45 Fisher Houses worldwide, mostly in the United States. 
Since 1990 they have provided services to more than 8,500 military families who have stayed more than 1.5 million days supporting their soldier during rehabilitation.

SHELTON - American Legion Post 16’s annual Veterans Day observance will be held Wednesday. 

Ceremonies will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Veterans’ Memorial on the Shelton Riverwalk. 

The unit will then proceed to Post 16 on Bridgeport Avenue for 11:30 a.m. services and luncheon.

After the luncheon, members of Post 16 will visit Shelton Intermediate School.
