'Turnback Tuesday' highlights Derby's celebration for soldiers
Turnback Tuesday remembers the Welcome Home Celebration on Aug. 17, 1946 for our men and women who served in WW II.
An entire day of activities was planned including a parade, baseball, food and dancing.
Veterans were asked to leave their wallets at home and were treated to food and beer for their parched throats. The city and its residents acted as hosts.
All businesses and households were asked to fly an American Flag. Army beat Navy in a baseball game.
There were literally thousands dancing in the streets for the Block Dance between Fourth and Fifth Streets in Derby.
The library is looking for a copy of this program to add to our Reference History Room.
Please contact us if you have one that you can donate. Thank you.
Thanks goes to the Derby Public Library staff for sharing interesting local history each week.

Rochelle shares list of bills in support of CT veterans
HB 6449, An Act Expanding Economic Opportunity in Occupations Licensed by the Department of Public Health, reduces the requirements for health care professionals licensed in other states to obtain licensure and practice in Connecticut, making it easier for the family of service members to transfer into our state.
HB 5592, An Act Redefining “Veteran” and Establishing a Qualifying Review Board, ensures all Connecticut veterans have access to state-provided services and benefits.
HB 5737, An Act Establishing A Veterans and Military Tourism Trail, creates the Veterans and Military Tourism Trail to link memorials, battlegrounds and other historic sites related to CT's veterans and military history.
HB 6483, An Act Concerning the Enrollment of Children of Members of the Armed Forces in Public Schools and the Establishment of a Purple Star School Program, adopts the "Purple Star School Program" to ensure military-friendly schools for children who must relocate schools due to a change in a parent's duty station.
This takes a vital step to address some of the challenges children face when they switch schools and better supports military families.

Even further it was the catalyst that brought about the demise to European colonialism and allowed two super powers to rise, the United States and Soviet Union, hence the Cold War.

'Turnback Tuesday' features war games in Derby
In the summer of 1912, the New England and New York National Guards 'invaded' Derby in a war game. War games are a type of military exercise to test or improve tactical skills.
The two groups combined and collaborated so that each 'army' had a mix of soldiers from each guard. This image depicts the invading Red army which arrived with 50 carloads of soldiers, horses and equipment at Derby Depot on August 12. The next day they crossed the bridge into Shelton. On August 17 the defending Blue army was declared 'defeated' in Newtown.
Thanks to the Derby Public Library for sharing this interesting local history each week!
