Derby 350 Plaque of the Week features historic downtown hotel

Our Derby 350 History Plaque of the Week brings us back to a time when Derby still had hotels - it has none today.

However, Elizabeth Street next to the Sterling Opera House was the site of the Hotel Clark and its predecessor Bassett House, which was originally the residence of Sheldon Bassett.

Both hotels were the centers of community and social life in town, and the Hotel Clark was also the place where the Derby-Shelton Rotary Club was started.

We want to thank the Rotary Club and Tom D'Addario and Capwood Associates, current owners of the office building on the Elizabeth Street site for purchasing the plaque.

We also want to thank Derby DPW for installing it.

Derby-Shelton Rotary Club to hold annual Flags for Heroes event

SHELTON - In 2022, the Derby-Shelton Rotary Club held the first Flags for Heroes event at Veterans Memorial Park.

The event is the brainchild of former President Linda Holmes-Hannon who first saw the event held in another community and brought it to the attention of the Club.

The event is meant to honor heroes from all walks of life and involves placing commemorative flags with the names of the heroes where the event is held.

In 2022, that was only at Veterans Memorial Park in Shelton. In 2023, the event expanded to include Derby’s historically significant Birmingham Green.

From May 24 to June 19 more than 300 flags with personalized medallions will be flown on the Derby Green and Veterans Memorial Park.
