Griffin offers healthcare training scholarships for Valley residents

ANSONIA - The Griffin Hospital School of Allied Health Careers, 219 Division St. is offering full-tuition scholarships for Lower Naugatuck Valley residents.

Funded by the Derby-Shelton Rotary Club and local families, the scholarships will pay the full tuition for the school’s Patient Care Technician (PCT) and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) programs. 

Applicants for the PCT scholarship must demonstrate financial need, be a single mother, and a resident of Ansonia or Seymour. Applicants for the CNA scholarship funded through the Derby-Shelton Rotary Club must demonstrate financial need, be a resident of Derby or Shelton and show a history of community involvement. 

The school’s 15-week PCT program requires students to attend classes Monday through Thursday. The program offers ample hands-on training and opportunities for practical experience in the school's fully equipped mock hospital room and during the 80 hours of clinical experience. The course tuition includes textbook, liability insurance, CPR certification, clinical rotations and national certification exams. Upcoming scholarship application deadline is Jan. 4, 2027 for the Jan. 18, 2027 class start date.

The six-week CNA course offers students an affordable and condensed schedule with classes Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. or 5 p.m.-9 p.m. CNA program content includes infection control, legal and ethical responsibilities, communications, body mechanics, moving and positioning residents, personal care skills, nutrition, measuring vital signs, and restorative care. The program’s clinical experience will be at Griffin Hospital and a long-term stay facility, totaling 40 hours. After successfully completing the course and clinical experience, students will be qualified to take the certification exam for a Nursing Assistant in Connecticut. The CNA course tuition fee includes the course book and workbook CPR training, clinical rotation and liability insurance. Upcoming scholarship application deadlines include Oct. 26 for the Nov. 9 class start date, and Dec. 21 for the Jan. 4, 2027 class start date.

Until March 20, Futuro Health is waiving its $150 application fee for the School’s exceptional Certified Nurse Assistant, Phlebotomy, Medical Assistant and Patient Care Technician training programs. 

Additionally, the School has recently partnered with Futuro Health to offer its healthcare training courses tuition-free to qualifying applicants.

The School will host an open house and application assistance event March 12 from 2-6 p.m.

Crosby Commons nursing assistant in Shelton honored with prestigious award

SHELTON - Elizabeth “Liz” Garcia, Certified Nursing Assistant at Crosby Commons Independent and Assisted Living Community at Wesley Village, was recently honored by the Connecticut Assisted Living Association with the 2023 Outstanding Resident Service Award. 

The award was presented by Christopher Carter, President of CALA, at a special ceremony at The Water’s Edge Resort and Spa in Westbrook.

Garcia has been part of the team at Crosby Commons for 13 years, working as a CNA and providing exceptional care to residents. She was nominated for the award by Crosby team members for her professionalism, kindness, and caring spirit, and her commitment to supporting each resident’s health and independence and dignity.

“She is consistently dependable and comes to work ready to assist co-workers and residents with a good attitude and a sense of humor, which is much appreciated,” said Danita Alberti, Registered Nurse and Director of Carelink Nursing Services at the community.  “Liz’s approach to serving residents is focused on cultivating relationships and helping each individual maintain their independence. Residents often request to have her assist them with their daily care routine, which speaks a great deal of their respect for her.”

Along with Garcia, longtime Crosby Commons team member and housekeeper Terri Moffat, was also nominated for outstanding resident service award. While she was not an award recipient for 2023, Moffat has been a loyal and dedicated part of the Crosby team for 38 years, shaping the culture of the community with her commitment to serving residents and collaborating with her team.

United Methodist Homes, the senior living provider organization which manages Crosby Commons, received three additional awards from its Farmington and Newington communities in recognition of outstanding team members and residents. 

Overall a total of four CALA awards, including Garcia’s, were won across the organization for 2023.

There will be two sessions of the accelerated CNA program, starting Sept.12 and Nov. 7. The fall sessions for Phlebotomy and PCT will start on Sept. 13, and the MA session is set to start in October.

The accelerated CNA course offers students an affordable and condensed classroom schedule with classes Monday through Thursday from 5-9 p.m. in September and from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. in November. 

CNA content includes infection control, legal and ethical responsibilities, communications, body mechanics, moving and positioning residents, personal care skills, nutrition, measuring vital signs, and restorative care.

Students will practice skills prior to their clinical experience. The program’s clinical experience will be at Griffin Hospital and a long term stay facility. The clinical hours are 5-10 p.m. in September and from 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. in November, totaling 40 hours. 

After successfully completing the course and clinical experience, students will be qualified to take the certification exam for a Nursing Assistant in Connecticut. The CNA course tuition fee includes the course book and workbook, CPR training, a 40-hour clinical rotation, and liability insurance.

The 17-week PCT program requires students to attend didactic and skills review on Mondays and Fridays from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., and have the option to take the 14-week Phlebotomy course on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays either during the day from 9 a.m.-noon or during the evening from 6-9 p.m. The PCT program offers ample hands-on training and opportunities for practical experience in the school's fully equipped mock hospital room and during the 160 hours of clinical experience.

The 14-week Phlebotomy course will be held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays with the option of day classes from 9 a.m.-noon or evening classes from 6-9 p.m. The program offers 32-40 hours of clinical experience. 

The course tuition includes textbook, liability insurance, CPR certification, clinical rotations, and national certification exams. College credits are offered for eligible certification earners.

The MA program runs for 28 weeks with classes five days a week from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m., including 160 clinical hours at Griffin Faculty Physicians’ primary care offices and specialty offices such as gastroenterology, OB-GYN, surgical and cardiology. 

Medical assistants perform both clinical and administrative duties and assist a variety of providers. The MA course tuition includes textbook, liability insurance, CPR certification, online modules and certification practice tests, clinical externships, and national certification exam.  College credits are offered for eligible certification earners.

The Certified Clinical Medical Assistant training program will start in April.

The program prepares students to become multi-skilled healthcare professionals that specialize in outpatient settings. Medical assistants perform both clinical and administrative duties and assist a variety of providers including physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants. Graduates of this program may find entry-level positions in medical offices, clinics, urgent care centers and may work in general medicine or specialty practices. This program also provides the diversity of other job options in the hospital or laboratory setting.

The program runs for 28 weeks with classes five days a week from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m., including 160 clinical hours at Griffin Faculty Physicians’ primary care offices and specialty offices such as gastroenterology, OB-GYN, surgical, and cardiology.

Topics covered in the program include anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, clinical procedures, aseptic techniques, minor surgical procedures, phlebotomy, electrocardiogram, pathology and law and ethics in the medical field, as well as general administrative skills including electronic health records, insurance billing and coding, formatting documents, basic accounting and patient scheduling.

The Certified Clinical Medical Assistant training program is offered twice a year.

About the School of Allied Health Careers

Griffin Hospital's School of Allied Health Careers was one of the first hospital-based schools of its kind to be authorized by the Connecticut Department of Higher Education and offers Phlebotomy and other professional educational programs to provide training, education, and certification in selected health careers. 

Classes are taught by certified instructors in the Griffin Hospital Medical Building, 300 Seymour Ave.
