Learn about insect fossils at Derby Neck Library Saturday


DERBY - Join us [at Derby Neck Library] Sept. 12 at 2 p.m. for STEM Saturdays!
Our children’s program offers fun science explorations that build curiosity about the natural world. Together, we'll use the scientific method to observe and experiment.

Derby Neck Library to launch STEM Saturdays for children


DERBY - STEM Saturdays is our newest children's program [at Derby Neck Library] offering fun science explorations that help grow understanding about the natural world and reinforce the scientific method as a tool for making meaning out of observations.

STEM Saturdays held from 2-3 p.m. alternate weekly between programs designed for little children (ages 3-6) and big children (ages 7+). 
This week's program [Feb. 14] is recommended for the Bigs.

Topic: Cryptology and codebreaking. How to make and decipher codes, and how that connects to security in the modern world.

The Library is at 307 Hawthorne Ave.

Salvation Army in Ansonia to hold 'Hero Hotline' Vacation Bible School


ANSONIA - The Salvation Army will hold its Vacation Bible School July 17-21 at Corps' headquarters, 26 Lester St. 
Hours are 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Campers will enjoy an interactive, energizing, Bible-based good time.

DERBY - Every other Tuesday, little ones are invited to join Miss Krissy on Zoom for some super science projects! Join her from 11-11:15 a.m. this Tuesday, Sept. 7.

Supply packs will be available at the library beginning on the Saturday before the event and can be reserved by calling at 203-734-1492, but many projects will require household materials you’ll already have around. The Library is at 307 Hawthorne Ave.

Derby Public Library to host educational Rain Stick workshop for kids


DERBY - Derby Public Library will hold a fun, in-person Rain Stick workshop for ages 5-11 at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

The educational workshop will be held outdoors. The Library is at 313 Elizabeth St.

Co-sponsored by South Central CT Regional Water Authority, kids will learn Rain Stick origins and, with adult supervision, create their own!

Derby Neck Library to host science sleuthing presentation




DERBY - Derby Neck Library is calling all super-sleuths who love science--join us over Zoom at 1 p.m. Saturday for a special presentation by the Connecticut Science Center!
A botched bubble-blowing contest, some wonky security footage. Sounds like it's time to use science to solve this crime! 
Help us gather evidence as we retrace the steps of the crime and discover not only who did it, but what caused the sabotage! 
Together, we will look for evidence of chemical reactions and identify the unique properties of newly formed products to help solve the chem-mystery!
This program is targeted to ages 8+, but all are welcome! 
Registration is required for this program to receive both the required handout and the Zoom link.

Virtual Teen Maker Space slated at Derby Public Library


DERBY - Derby Public Library invites all young adults ages 12 to 17 to a virtual Teen Maker Space at 3 p.m. July 9.
The Whitney Water Center’s science educator Lisa DeFrancesco will explain and demonstrate the concept of Surface Tension.
Registration for this online Zoom gathering is accessible on the Events Calendar of the library’s webpage at www.derbypubliclibrary.org. 


Make-Ahead Breakfasts
On July 23 from 3-4 p.m., the Library invites all young adults ages 12 to 17 to a virtual Teen Maker Space where attendees will learn about the convenience and time saving aspects of Make-Ahead Breakfasts. 
This event will address the challenges to preparing breakfasts on the go, look at food preparation to save time, and discover more ideas for morning meals. 
Certified dietitian Siddhi Sheth will discuss tips for making balanced breakfasts, as well as demonstrate a few items for members to prepare on their own.
