SEYMOUR - Fourth graders at Bungay Elementary School took part Sept. 23 in the Federal Emergency Management Administration’s “Students Tools for Emergency Planning” program, also known as STEP.  

September is National Preparedness Month.

 

This is the 13^th year Seymour students have participated in the “STEP Program,” which was piloted in Seymour in 2008.  

Seymour Public Schools Director of Security Rich Kearns received national recognition from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and FEMA when FEMA modeled Seymour’s adaptation of the program nationally.  

The “STEP Program” is sponsored by FEMA and the Connecticut Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security. 

 

Seymour School Security Officers Ron Barnard and Officer Kevin Pimpinelli have joined Kearns in teaching students the steps on how to prepare their families in the event an emergency or disaster was to strike. 

Each student was given a backpack to take home.  

The backpacks contained items to help start building their own family emergency kit that included an emergency blanket, flashlights, whistle, activity books, and information to share with their families to better prepare them in the event of an emergency or disaster. 

It is found that if people are better prepared to deal with a crisis before it strikes, the outcomes and recovery process will be that much easier for them.

SEYMOUR - Bungay Elementary School and Chatfield-LoPresti Elementary School 4th and 5th graders recently were visited by Dialed Action Sports Team, a professional action sports BMX bike stunt team based in New Jersey.

Senior mentors recognized at Bungay School in Seymour

Seymour resident John McGinn, a senior mentor, works with two first-grade students Tuesday at Bungay Elementary School in Seymour. It was the last day of the mentoring program for this school year. The seniors were presented with certificates of appreciation and treated to a luncheon in the gym.
McGinn's wife, Lucille, is co-coordinator of the program for students in Kindergarten and Grades 1 and 2.

Dr. Seuss' birthday celebrated at Bungay School in Seymour

SEYMOUR - Students at Bungay Elementary School in Seymour learned about Dr. Suess Wednesday. It would have been the children's author's 112th birthday.

The goal of the "Read Across America" celebration each year is to instill in students a lifelong love of reading.

Superintendent of Schools Christine Syriac and Bungay Assistant Principal Kris Boyle were among those who read Dr. Seuss books to classes throughout the day. First Selectman Kurt Miller had planned to read to students but was not feeling well and could not attend.

I always enjoy covering school programs in the Valley, but I had a prior commitment to attend a meeting in Shelton and could not get there.

Seymour students learn water safety from 'Stewie the Duck'

SEYMOUR - As the school year ends and summer begins, warmer weather will bring the opening of family pools and family visits to the beach! Every year we hear of accidental drowning that occurs during the warmer months.

Seymour Public Schools' Director of Security Rich Kearns thought it would be beneficial to the Seymour Community to continue a water safety program for younger children that can be shared with their families in an effort to spread a little bit of prevention that can save a life.

For the fourth year in a row Kearns was joined by Seymour Police Department School Resource Officer Corey Tomasella to present to all of the first grade students in the Seymour Public Schools a water safety program called “Stewie the Duck Learns to Swim.”

“Stewie the Duck Learns to Swim” was founded by Kim and Stew Leonard Jr. The program teaches children and parents the importance of water safety.

Stew and Kim Leonard turned their personal tragedy of the drowning of their toddler son into inspiration and created this water safety program.

The program was held for all first grade students at Bungay Elementary School and Chatfield-LoPresti Elementary School. 

During the program children were given safety tips to use around pools and the beach.

Students were thrilled to meet Stewie the Duck himself who made a special visit to teach children the three important rules: 
Don’t jump in until you learn to swim, Cover your chest with a safe life vest, and Don’t play near the water alone.

Through the generosity of the Stew Leonard III Children’s Charities, 250 “Stewie the Duck Learns to Swim” books donated to the Seymour Public Schools to distribute to each first grade child to take home. 
The total cost of these books totals was just over $1,200. Parents were encouraged to take the time to read this book with their child and share these important water safety tips with the entire family.

The program was presented by Rich Kearns Director of Security for Seymour Public Schools and Seymour Police Department School Resource Officer Corey Tomasella with the assistance of Seymour High School seniors students Shaylin Rodriguez and Jailyn Brantley.

Seymour Lions roar into Bungay School, give seedlings to students

Club takes part in national program to mark Arbor Day

SEYMOUR - I had a great time visiting Bungay Elementary School Friday, and I'm not lion.

Three members of the Seymour Lions Club visited the school and distributed fir seedlings to fourth graders. It was part of a nationwide 4th Grade Foresters USA program to mark Arbor Day and teach children the importance of planting trees. The club distributed 190 seedlings to fourth graders at Bungay and Chatfield-LoPresti schools.

Seymour students win fire prevention poster contest

SEYMOUR - Congratulations go out to the talented students who recently were recognized for winning a fire prevention poster contest. 
The town has been participating in the Connecticut Fire Prevention Poster Recognition Program for at least 15 years.  

This is a cooperative effort between the Office of the State Fire Marshal, CT Fire Marshal’s Association, Connecticut Fire Chiefs Association, Connecticut Board of Education, Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, and the Connecticut Fair Plan representing the Insurance Industry.  

This year the Seymour Fire Marshal’s office chose four winners (two of which will be forwarded to the state program to compete in the New Haven County portion of the contest).  
These four students, a fourth and fifth grader from Chatfield-LoPresti School and Bungay School were selected as the town winners.  

They had the opportunity to ride a fire truck to school along with a parent. This was a joint effort with the Seymour Fire Department and Fire Marshal’s office.

It is events like this that create lasting memories and will hopefully impress upon the students how important it is to practice fire safety activities.  

This year’s winners were fifth grader Sara Kochiss and fourth grader Louis Zhu from Chatfield-LoPresti Elementary School, and fifth grader Gabriel Sand and fourth grader Camille Grandy from Bungay Elementary School. 

Gabriel Sand and Camille Grandy’s pictures were chosen as the town winners and will be forwarded to the New Haven County competition.
