DERBY - Derby Public Library Children's Author Visit with Ariel Sloan for ages 4-9, part of the  
Kurrency Kids™ series outdoors will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. today at the Library, 313 Elizabeth St. 

Author Ariel Sloan and her latest picture book, "Frugal Freddy Buys New Shoes," is featured as a Story Walk along with money-themed interactive activities that teach your child how to make informed financial decisions.

Meet children's author Saturday in outdoor program at Derby Public Library

DERBY - Derby native Ariel Sloan and the Library have teamed up to bring Sloan’s newest book "Frugal Freddy Buys New Shoes" to life as part of an interactive Story Walk!

Take a stroll with us as Freddy and his friends teach the value of saving, necessary spending and meeting financial goals!

Sloan's books will also be available for purchase the day of the event! Chance to win a prize in our raffle.

Children's author to visit Plumb Memorial Library in Shelton

SHELTON - Children’s author Bill Rockwell joins Ms. Kim to read his story, George, at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 24 at Plumb Memorial Library.

Come listen to the story, enjoy refreshments and a craft, and get a free copy of the book signed by the author!  

The program is for ages 3-7; registration is required here or at 203-924-9461.

Celebrate Dr. Seuss Saturday at Plumb Memorial Library in Shelton

SHELTON - One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish...it's that time of year again! 

Join the celebration at Plumb Memorial Library of the children's author Dr. Seuss and all his wonderful books at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
Enjoy a story, birthday hat craft, party games and sing Happy Birthday to Dr. Seuss plus enjoy a piece of cake of course! 

The program is geared toward kids 0-9 years old and their caregivers.

Children's author entertains in Shelton for Read Across the Valley Day

SHELTON - The Valley Early Childhood Regional Council of the Valley Council for Health and Human Services hosted a breakfast this week for Read Across the Valley. 
The annual event was held at the Harry B. Brownson Country Club.

Children's author Ryan SanAngelo entertained elected officials, educators, and community members at the event, who later read to children in early education classrooms in the Valley. 

SanAngelo is the author of a picture book, Spaghetti Eddie, a story about a boy who loves to eat spaghetti.

                               

Dr. Seuss' birthday celebrated at Bungay School in Seymour

SEYMOUR - Students at Bungay Elementary School in Seymour learned about Dr. Suess Wednesday. It would have been the children's author's 112th birthday.

The goal of the "Read Across America" celebration each year is to instill in students a lifelong love of reading.

Superintendent of Schools Christine Syriac and Bungay Assistant Principal Kris Boyle were among those who read Dr. Seuss books to classes throughout the day. First Selectman Kurt Miller had planned to read to students but was not feeling well and could not attend.

I always enjoy covering school programs in the Valley, but I had a prior commitment to attend a meeting in Shelton and could not get there.

Derby artist pens story about a tiny snowman

DERBY - City resident Evelyn C. North recently penned "The Littlest Snowman," a delightful tale that is based on a true story.

North, an artist, is the creator of The Shapels, a group of friendly characters crafted from simple shapes. They teach young children math, language skills, and more in a fun and engaging way. 

Tommy Triangle (pictured above) is one of The Shapels, who coincidentally live in Shapeltown.

North said the snowman story came from the imagination of her now-grown son when he was about five years old.

She said, "Even though there was hardly any snow on the ground, he insisted that he was going to build a snowman. He surprised us with a tiny little snowman - 8 inches tall!"

That long ago memory was the inspiration for the story, which you can read here.

Author inspires Seymour students to read, write

Children's author Joe Shandrowski uses audience participation to create an illustration.

SEYMOUR - Children's author and illustrator Joe Shandrowski of Fairfield visited Chatfield-LoPresti School Tuesday with his Reading Rocks pep rally. 

The fourth and fifth graders in the audience enjoyed Shandrowski's lively presentation that focused on the importance of reading and using one's imagination to become successful writers.
