Seymour first selectman loses taco-eating bet, washes TEAM's vans

Seymour First Selectman Kurt Miller, right, takes part in a previous taco-eating contest, with former champion Alex Danka of Seymour.

SEYMOUR - First Selectman Kurt Miller Tuesday made good on a bet he lost to TEAM Inc.'s President/CEO David Morgan, and spent two hours washing TEAM's Meals on Wheels food delivery trucks.
Miller cleaned and polished several trucks in the parking lot of Hot Tamale's Mexican Bar & Grill.

The bet happened last month during a charity taco-eating contest held at Hot Tamale's to raise money for the Meals on Wheels program. The program delivers nutritional meals directly to the front doors of the Valley's elderly folks and shut-ins.

According to TEAM officials, the Meals on Wheels program has taken a financial hit and is able to provide fewer meals to those who request the service.

Those interested in making a donation to the program can do so by visiting http://teaminc.org/donate/

Solar power workshop slated for Seymour homeowners

SEYMOUR - The town has been selected to participate in an award-winning residential solar program that makes going solar easy and affordable.

Solarize Seymour is part of Solarize Connecticut - the groundbreaking residential solar program managed by the non-profit organization, SmartPower.

Solarize Connecticut has helped thousands of Connecticut residents save money on energy bills by going solar.

Solarize Seymour is a coordinated effort across the community, supported by the Town of Seymour. Through a competitive selection process, the Town has selected PurePoint Energy as its solar installer.
PurePoint Energy will provide the solar installations in Seymour at special discount pricing in exchange for outreach and education from the Town.

Solarize Seymour also offers residents access to financing options that make going solar affordable with no upfront costs.
SmartPower has partnered with Dividend Solar to help qualified residents save money with the $0 down financing option.  Other financing resources are available through Seymour’s solar installer.

The Solarize Seymour program will kick off with a workshop from 7-8:30 p.m. April 11 at Seymour Middle School, 211 Mountain Road.
Residents can learn about the program, be introduced to their solar installer, hear about financing options, and have a chance to learn if their house is good for solar.

Homeowners who want to find out if their home is good for solar can go directly to Solarizect.com/Seymour
Residents who live in surrounding communities can also participate in Solarize by going to SolarizeCT.com.

Award-winning program
Solarize is an award-winning program that increases residential solar through a proven formula.  It relies on an on-the-ground outreach campaign provided through the Town that helps educate consumers.
The pre-selected solar installer means residents are getting high quality equipment at reduced rates, specifically chosen for Seymour residents.
In Connecticut Solarize was sparked by The Connecticut Green Bank and is managed by SmartPower (www.smartpower.org).

“The Town of Seymour is excited to bring the Solarize program to Seymour! Solarize is a great opportunity for homeowners and businesses to invest in their home and save on their ever-rising utility bills,” First Selectman Kurt Miller said. “Make sure to stop by one of our events to see how much you can save by going solar!”

“Connecticut is truly becoming a national leader in solar through the Solarize Connecticut program,” said Brian F. Keane, President of SmartPower.
“Working in partnership with Connecticut communities, Solarize Connecticut has helped residential solar grow from less than 900 installations in 2012 to over 22,000 today.   And now we know that solar ownership increases the property value of our homes – so it’s a win-win-win! For the homeowner, the community and the entire state of Connecticut.”

More information about Solarize Seymour can be found by visiting Solarizect.com/Seymour or by contacting Chamae Mejias at cmejias@smartpower.org

Dr. Seuss' birthday celebrated at Bungay School in Seymour

SEYMOUR - Students at Bungay Elementary School in Seymour learned about Dr. Suess Wednesday. It would have been the children's author's 112th birthday.

The goal of the "Read Across America" celebration each year is to instill in students a lifelong love of reading.

Superintendent of Schools Christine Syriac and Bungay Assistant Principal Kris Boyle were among those who read Dr. Seuss books to classes throughout the day. First Selectman Kurt Miller had planned to read to students but was not feeling well and could not attend.

I always enjoy covering school programs in the Valley, but I had a prior commitment to attend a meeting in Shelton and could not get there.

But you can read all about the birthday celebration in a story by my friend, New Haven Register correspondent Jean Falbo-Sosnovich.

Plan to combine Ansonia, Seymour services applauded

Regular readers no doubt realize that I stay far away from the political fray.

But I have to say that as an Ansonia resident I am all for the idea being considered by Ansonia Mayor David S. Cassetti and Seymour First Selectman Kurt Miller to combine municipal resources.

Talk of regionalization always faces some opposition in the Valley, but it makes good fiscal sense for neighboring towns to share some services.

You can read all about the plan under consideration in a story written by New Haven Register correspondent Jean Falbo-Sosnovich.

Weather closes Seymour Town Hall

Sharing a message from First Selectman Kurt Miller:

"Town Hall closed today as of 3 PM due to the inclement weather. At 1:30 PM, Governor Malloy issued an executive order stating that taxes submitted by 5:30 PM tomorrow will be considered on-time. If you weren't able to pay them today because of the weather, you will have an extra day.
"The Town does not have the authority to issue an extension, which is why it was not done earlier.

"Public Works has been out since last night clearing the roads, but the snow is accumulating fast and most roads are not in good condition. Please consider staying in if you don't have to go somewhere and if you must be on the roads, drive safe."

Official says Seymour Town Hall to open at noon

Sharing from Office of the First Selectman's Facebook page:

"Town Hall will be open today from noon until 5 p.m. There will be no evening meetings."

A message from Seymour first selectman

"Christmas is a time to reflect on all that is good in our lives, some things big and others small. It is a time for family and friends, for good cheer and happiness. It is a time we wish joy to all.
"But, unfortunately, this spirit only seems to last a few days. Please join me in working to keep this wonderful holiday spirit all year long. Together, let's make 2015 the best year yet. Tara, Drew, Kaitlyn and I would like to wish you all a joyous holiday season. From our family to yours, may you have a Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year."

- Kurt Miller
