Klarides-Ditria cautions pet owners about hot asphalt

 

With hot temperatures forecast for the week, the governor announced he is activating Connecticut’s Extreme Hot Weather Protocol on Tuesday, June 18 through 12 p.m. Sunday, June 23. He reminded residents that cooling centers are being opened statewide and you can locate the nearest cooling center by calling 2-1-1 or viewing the list at 211ct.org. It’s important to be prepared for hot temperatures, and that includes making sure your pets are safe, too.  The American Red Cross has the following tips on keeping pets safe, but essentially treat your pets the same as you treat yourself: Never leave your pet in a hot vehicle, even for a few minutes. The inside temperature of the car can quickly reach 120 degrees even with the windows cracked open. Limit exercise on hot days. Exercise in the early morning or evening hours. Walk your pet in the grass if possible, to avoid hot surfaces burning their paws. If your pet is outside, make sure they have access to shade and plenty of cool water. Water safety is important for your furry friends. Do not leave pets unsupervised around a pool—they aren’t all good swimmers Watch your pets at a backyard barbecue. Keep them away from the grill and know that some food can be poisonous to them. Avoid raisins, grapes, onions, chocolate and products with artificial sweeteners. Heat stroke is a common problem for pets in the warmer weather. Dogs with short noses or snouts, like the boxer or bulldog, are especially prone to heat stroke, along with overweight pets, those with extremely thick fur coat or any pet with upper respiratory problems. Open windows or doors are a temptation for pets to try to get outside. Keep all doors and unscreened windows closed, and make sure screens are tightly secured Some plants in your garden can be hazardous to animals. Visit the Animal Poison Control Center to find out which plants and flowers are poisonous to animals.

Seymour C.A.R.E.S. seeks volunteer shelter manager

If this is an emergency where an animal is sick/hurt, you MUST contact your town Animal Control.

If they're closed, call your police station.

At the very least, transport the animal to the emergency vet.

Pet photos with Easter Bunny at Quarry Walk in Oxford to benefit Seymour CARES

OXFORD - Join us at RCO Pet Care and Seymour CARES for our third annual photos with the Easter Bunny event at 11 a.m. Sunday.

This is our first year partnering with our friends at Evergreen Vet Clinic in Quarry Walk, 300 Oxford Road.

Families are asked to bring a donation of non-perishable food to be donated to local rescue Seymour CARES.

Seymour CARES (Coco's Animal Rescue Efforts of Seymour) is a 501c3 organization run entirely by dedicated volunteers. It is their mission is to provide temporary shelter to abandoned and surrendered cats and dogs until they can find them loving homes.

Participating families are asked to bring a donation of much needed supplies.

Bad weather, injuries, short winter days: What can you do to curb your pets' boredom and deep them happy and healthy? 

Learn different DIY tips and tricks to keep all types of pets active. This program is FREE to humans, unfortunately, we can't invite animals to attend this program. 

For those who wish to donate, non-perishable, unexpired and unopened pet food will be accepted for the CT Humane Society that evening as well.

Ansonia Animal Shelter to hold pet costume contest at harvest festival

ANSONIA - The Ansonia Animal Shelter is having a "Pet Costume Contest" at the Ansonia Harvest Festival. A picture of your pet needs to be dropped off at the PD by Sept. 22.

Tickets will be available to purchase to vote for your favorite costume. Ticket chosen and animal will win gift card.

Derby Neck Library to host pet parades via Zoom this summer

DERBY - Derby Neck Library is offering residents a chance to bring all of their pets together for a grand show! 

Log in at any point during the hour between 11 a.m. and noon on June 30, July 21, and Aug. 11 to show off your pet, a photo of your pet, or your favorite stuffed animal. 

Everyone will have a chance to talk about their pet and ask questions of others. 

Four legs, two legs, fins, wings, scales, all are welcome! 

You'll get points in READsquared and a badge for attending, but you will also get extra points if you can "tie your tail to tale"- for example: "My dog Fluffernutter is just like Rip Van Winkle because he loves to sleep!"

Shops at Seymour to celebrate Dog Days of Summer

Learn pet first aid at Griffin Hospital in Derby

DERBY - People and Animals Working in Spirit (PAWS), Griffin Hospital’s pet therapy program, and Connecticut Emergency Animal Response Service (EARS) will host a Pet First Aid Class on Jan. 27 at the hospital, 130 Division St.

The EARS Team will be at the hospital from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. 

From 11 a.m.-noon, the team will talk about responding to medical emergencies and technical rescues involving animals in the community. 

The Pet First Aid class will be from noon- 1 p.m., featuring a multimedia presentation and hands-on learning, followed by a Q&A session with the EARS team.

Registration is required, but this program is open to all ages. 

Though the class is about pets, participants are asked to leave their pets at home so they can focus on the hands-on work and demonstrations.

Suggested donation is $10 a person for the class. 

All contributions will help EARS continue its pet response mission.

EARS is a team of volunteer first responders trained for rapid-response to "all-hazard" animal emergencies within Connecticut. The organization focuses on disaster response, emergency transport, technical rescue, and training pet owners how to respond to an emergency.
