From the 'Turnback Tuesday' archives: Shannon Pharmacy in Derby

This week's "Turnback Tuesday" features the Shannon Pharmacy, started by James F. Shannon.

Mr. Shannon was a prominent member of Derby, being one of the founders of the Elks Lodge in town. In 1900, he opened his pharmacy at 53 Sixth St. on the corner of Sixth and Hawkins Streets.

It is unknown when the pharmacy officially closed, but this image was taken in 1908.

Ansonia man, 33, charged in shooting on Sixth Street - Updated with photo

Melvin Burroughs

ANSONIA - Police Sunday arrested Melvin Burroughs, 33, of Ansonia for his involvement in a shooting that day on Sixth Street. 

Burroughs had been in a verbal dispute with two other males when Burroughs allegedly fired multiple shots at them, Lt. Patrick Lynch said in a written statement. 

No one was struck by the gunshots; however, a vehicle, shed, and garbage cans were struck by the gunfire. 

Burroughs is a convicted felon and prohibited from owning or possessing firearms. 

Burroughs was charged with two counts of Criminal Attempt at Assault First Degree, two counts of Reckless Endangerment First Degree, Threatening First Degree, Unlawful Discharge, Criminal Use of a Firearm, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, and Criminal Mischief Third Degree. Burroughs posted a $150,000 bond and will be arraigned in Milford Superior Court April 12.

 

During a search warrant at Burroughs’ residence, officers and detectives recovered three handguns, an AR15 rifle, a flame-thrower, assorted ammunition and gun parts. Additional charges are expected to be filed against Burroughs related to the firearms recovered during the search of his residence.

Ansonia Police probe Sixth Street shooting; suspect in custody

ANSONIA - Gunfire erupted at 4 p.m. Sunday on Sixth Street, Ansonia Police Lt. Patrick Lynch said in a release late Sunday.

During the initial investigation officers learned  several people were involved in a verbal dispute when one of the people began to shoot at the others. 

No one was struck by the gunfire and the suspect was taken into custody without incident. The investigation is still ongoing and the identity of the suspect will be released [today], Lynch said.

The shooting appears to be an isolated incident and there is no danger to the community.
