DERBY - In recognition of World Cancer Day on Thursday, Feb. 4, the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital will offer free pre-screenings for breast cancer mammography.

World Cancer Day is the global initiative led by the Union for International Cancer Control that seeks to raise worldwide awareness, improve education and encourage personal, collective and government action for preventative health measures and improved access to life-saving cancer treatment and care.

In addition to recognizing this cause, this screening event is also part of Griffin’s commitment to help improve the health and well-being of its community.

The 2019-20 Community Health Improvement Plan for the Naugatuck Valley reports that the premature death rate for breast cancer in the Valley has declined at a faster rate than the state overall.

This is due in part to increased breast cancer screening throughout the area.

According to the American Cancer Society, many women age 40 and older are eligible for screening mammography. The appropriate age to start mammography and the frequency for testing varies based on individual risk factors

The pre-screening conducted by a breast cancer specialist over the phone and will help individuals understand breast cancer screening guidelines and when they should be screened, as well as genetic testing options.

Participants will be able to make an appointment for a breast cancer test if needed.

Spaces are limited. Call 203-732-1280 to make an appointment for the pre-screening phone call or for more information.

This is a press release from Griffin Hospital.
